Page 2 of 13 Table of Contents 1 Communicating with the laser automatic DHCP Selecting laser parameters Enabling laser emission Diagnostics tab Service tab Setup tab
Page 3 of 13 1 Communicating with the laser automatic DHCP Ensure the laser is connected to the same network (the yellow LED on the Ethernet connector should illuminate with a steady light. The green LED should illuminate but will probably flicker. This shows that the laser is connected to your network.) Ensure the PC is connected to the same network as the laser. Install the GUI on to the PC and run it. The following will appear The DISCONNECTED status will alternate with CONNECTING as the GUI attempts to connect to the last laser it communicated with. In order to find the laser you have connected press the search button. This takes you to a form like this: The form may display more than one laser. The GUI constructs this list by sending out a broadcast packet. If a laser receives the packet it responds to the GUI. Note that the laser should be on the same subnet as the PC. That is the first three numbers in the IP addresses should be the same. In the example shown above you can see that identification of the laser can be established by noting the serial number. Some PC s have multiple network cards fitted. The will detect this and the user may select a specific network card. Only lasers connected via the selected card will be detected. To select the desired laser double click on the laser in the list. The search form will close and the GUI will attempt to connect to the laser. The Debug button expands the screen so that additional information about the detection process can be seen. It is possible to set the laser to static IP. However if the user selects an illegal IP address for the network in use it may well be that the laser disappears and cannot be detected. To rectify this the GUI has a Rescue button, pressing this causes the following form to appear:
Page 4 of 13 Pressing Set sends out a special broadcast packet which contains the serial number of the laser. This will attempt to change the lasers IP settings provided the serial numbers match. This mechanism avoids the system being locked out. To see what the IP address of the laser is set to the serial port may be used. Type the command QV and the IP address and mode will be displayed. Note that any changes to the IP address should be followed by a power cycle to ensure that he current IP address is correctly reported via the serial interface. The Manual IP group box will allow the user to specify which address should be used without the need to use the find facility. It may be that on some networks and UDP packets are not permitted. Enter the desired IP address and press the Use button. When the form is closed the GUI will attempt to communicate with a laser at the desired IP address.
Page 5 of 13 2 Selecting laser parameters Once communication between the GUI and the laser are established the following form appears: To change the laser parameters click the edit button, this will now enable waveform, pulse rate, burst length, duty cycle, mode, simmer and power control to be changed. Once the requested parameters have been entered there are two options To change power - Press the EDIT button, followed by the SELECT button. This will then write the new parameters to the laser. The changes can then be seen in the monitor window (lower half of the control screen). o o In software mode the monitor area of the GUI shows the simmer and active currents as and respectively In software mode the monitor area of the GUI shows the simmer and active currents as the external inputs in Volts. To change any other parameters - Press the EDIT button, followed by the SELECT button, followed by the START button. This will then write the new parameters to the laser. The changes can then be seen in the monitor window (lower half of the control screen).
Page 6 of 13 The parameters can be stored for ease of changing at another time. Name the settings in the program window and press the add button followed by the select button. To recall the saved settings, select the required saved parameters from the drop drown box and press select. The changes can then be seen in the monitor window (lower half of the control screen). If the saved parameters need deleting then select required named parameters, click edit then delete button.
Page 7 of 13 3 Enabling laser l emission Once the correct parameters have been set the laser is ready to fire. Screen shot opposite shows the laser parameters set only, the laser has not yet been enabled Click the ENABLE button, this will put the laser in to the ready state. The simmer current is now active and there will be a small amount of laser light emitted. Click the START button to enable laser emission. Laser emission will start as soon as the emission gate is placed high (pin 5) The parameters of the laser can be changed, while there is laser emission, using the edit button as detailed in section 2. Once these have been changed the START button needs to be pressed to change the parameters in the laser. To cease laser emission, turn the 5V laser emission gate off and press the OFF button
Page 8 of 13 If an alarm is generated, this is shown In the circled box opposite. By clicking on the button with a question mark, a list of alarms that have been generated will be shown. To clear the alarms click the clear button. If the alarm is a true alarm, the question mark will stay active.
Page 9 of 13 Press the Diag button 4 Diagnostics tab The diagnostic screen can be displayed as either, the pin outs from the break out board or the pin outs from the SCSI cable. To change the view press BREAK OUT button The mouse pointer can be used to pick the required pin, or the required pin can be chosen from the Dig in, Dig out or analogue drop down boxes. Pin description Input/output Pin outs Pin status Drop down boxes
Page 10 of 13 The lower part of the Diagnostic screen shows the. currents for the pre and power amplifiers. It also shows the logic and diode power supply voltages.
Page 11 of 13 5 Service tab Laser information can be found by pressing the service button. To read or write to the controller EPROM the service level pass code will need to be issued. This is only issued once the customer has completed service training.
Page 12 of 13 6 Setup tab If the baud rate requires changing, use the drop down box to select the baud rate and press the set button. The power to the laser will need to be toggled for the baud rate change to occur If the laser requires a firmware upgrade, click Define File button. Choose the bin file that has been sent by SPI and then click the Flash Laser button. A form will appear providing information about the flashing progress which takes only a few seconds. The reset button allows the connected laser to be reset. Note that this only the Ethernet communications that is reset and not the remainder of the laser. This command is implemented so that the IP address or mode may be changed and then the reset sent. Once the laser is reset the new settings will take effect.
Page 13 of 13 If the Comms button is pressed the bytes can be seen for receive and transmit. The PAUSE button can be pressed to pause the communications, this can then be scrolled one byte at a time by pressing the PLAY button. To resume normal communications the PAUSE button needs to be pressed again
