1 Ciena has developed a simplified process for ordering, managing and deploying licensed features that a number of Ciena products will use going forward. This document is a high-level overview of the Ciena licensing model, from ordering to deployment. At the center of this process is a dedicated interface within the Ciena customer portal, which you use to manage and activate your licenses. Obtaining Licenses The first step in the process occurs when you place an order with Ciena. When Ciena receives the order, it creates software license activation codes, which you use to activate the licensed features. Ciena sends these activation codes (on the PO ship date) to the list of recipients defined by the s associated with your account at the time the order was placed. Issue 1.1 September 2017
2 Applying Licenses Licenses that you obtain through the Ciena customer portal come in the form of a single binary license file that you transfer to, and activate on, your device. In the case of 6500, the device is a License Manager/Server. The license file contains the correct set of entitlements, based on the purchase order and device registration. Before activating licenses for the first time, you must register the device (License Manager/Server) on the customer portal. If you have already done this, skip Registering your Device and go to Finding and Activating Licenses, and Installing the License File on the License Manager/Server. Note: The tasks in this document and additional information on managing software licenses are available from Administration and Security, Registering your Device Before you register the device, log into the License Manager/Server as root or have sudo privileges. Creating the registration ID.bin file from the new License Manager/Server 1. On the device (License Manager/Server) you want to register on the portal, generate a registration ID.bin file: Change the directory as follows. Enter: cd /opt/ciena/flexnetls If you are logged in as root, enter the following command:./getregistrationid Alternatively, if you are logged in with sudo privileges, enter the following command, then sudo./getregistrationid The License Manager/Server generates in the /opt/ciena/flexnetls directory a registration ID.bin file with the following filename format: <hostid>_actid.bin 2. Transfer the registration ID.bin file to the machine you are using to log into the Ciena portal to obtain the license file. 3. Record the location of the.bin file on your machine. You will require the location later in this procedure. Registering the new device (License Manager/Server) on the portal 4. On the Ciena portal, select the Software tab. 5. Select the Software Licenses link (located on the left-hand side of the page, under the Software Download Center banner). The Software License Management page (new window) opens on the Device Management tab. 6. Click Add Device to display the Add Device page. All the devices already registered with the License Management application are listed on the page. 7. In the Add Device page, enter: the name of the License Manager/Server (typically the host name) in the Name field a text description of the License Manager/Server, information required to help manage the device (License Manager/Server) in the Notes field The Name and Notes fields are fully searchable.
3 8. Click Choose File (next to Registration Request File) and navigate to the registration ID.bin file (you recorded the location of the.bin file earlier in this procedure), select the file, and click Open. 9. Click Save. The Ciena software licensing solution will pair the information from the device (License Manager/Server) with this record. At this point, license files can be generated from the portal for this device (License Manager/Server). The newly added device will show up at the top of the Device Management table. Note: The registration ID.bin file is no longer needed at this point. Finding and Activating Licenses, and Installing the License File on the License Manager/Server Before you start this procedure, make sure you have the Activation Code received from Ciena. Locating the registered License Manager/Server on the portal 1. On the Ciena portal, select the Software tab. 2. Select the Software Licenses link (located on the left-hand side of the page, under the Software Download Center banner). 3. The Software License Management window (new window) opens on the Device Management tab. 4. Locate the License Manager/Server to which you will be adding license(s). (You can use a wildcard search and click Find.) Associating licenses with the device (License Manager/Server) 5. For the License Manager/Server listing, under the Function column, select Add License from the drop-down list and click Go. The Add License page opens. 6. On the Add License page, enter the Activation Code you received in the from Ciena, then click Find. All the products for which licenses are available against the Activation Code are displayed. 7. Select the required product. The Use column displays the total number of the licenses that are available to use. You can edit the number to a value lower than the total. 8. In the Function column, select Activate from the drop-down list and click Go. A confirmation page opens. 9. Check the information on the confirmation page. If the information is as required, click Commit. (Otherwise, click Cancel and follow the instructions.) 10. If browser pop-up messages are displayed, acknowledge the messages to save the.lic file to your machine. The license filename format is: ciena-<serverhostid>-<yymmddhhmm>.lic For example: ciena ffffff lic After the.lic file download is complete, the License Management page opens. The device (License Manager/Server) you added is listed at the top of the listing. The Products Installed column is listing the product you selected.
4 Installing the license file on the License Manager/Server 11. Transfer the.lic file from your machine to the License Manager/Server. 12. If you are not already logged into the License Manager/Server, log in as root or have sudo privileges. 13. Change the directory to the home directory: cd /opt/ciena/flexnetls 14. Install the license file (.lic) as follows: If you are logged in as root, enter the following command:./loadlicense <license_filename>.lic Alternatively, if you are logged in with sudo privileges, enter the following command and then sudo./loadlicense <license_filename>.lic 15. Confirm that the licenses were installed on the License Manager/Server as follows: If you are logged in as root, enter the following command:./loadlicense <license_filename>.lic Alternatively, if you are logged in with sudo privileges, enter the following command and then sudo./loadlicense <license_filename>.lic The list of installed licenses is displayed. To complete the acquisition by the 6500 shelf of the license information, after you have installed the license file on the License Manager/Server, you must provision the License Manager/Server on the Make sure the time is correctly set on the 6500 and Time Of Day is turned on before you perform Provisioning License Manager/Server information on the Provisioning License Manager/Server information on the 6500 To perform the following steps, you must log into Site Manager with an account with at least a level 4 UPC. 1. In Site Manager, select Shelf Licensing from the Configuration menu. 2. Select the License Server Management tab. 3. Click Set Server to open the SET LICENSE SERVER dialog box. 4. If required, select All or the required shelf from the Shelf drop-down list. 5. In the Primary IP address field, enter the IP address of the primary License Manager/Server. IPv4 and IPv6 IP addresses are supported. The primary and secondary License Managers/Servers cannot have the same IP address. 6. In the Primary Port field, enter the TCP port number of the primary License Manager/Server: port 7071 for HTTPS (default) port 7072 for HTTP 7. In the Protocol field, select the protocol. The port and the protocol must match: port 7071 for HTTPS port 7072 for HTTP 8. If required, from the HTTP/HTTPS Proxy drop-down list, select OFF or ON. 9. If required, in the Proxy IP Address field, enter the proxy IP address of the License Manager/Server. 10. If required, in the Proxy Port field, enter the proxy port number of the License Manager/Server (default is 8080). Do not use the same value for the Port and the Proxy Port. If you are using License Manager/Server default values, do not use 7071 or 7072 for the Proxy Port.
5 11. In the Audit Time field, enter the time in hh:mm format at which the daily audit will take place (usually a night time; default is 03:00). Within a 15-minute interval starting at the time set for audit, the shelf will communicate with the License Manager/Server and will automatically attempt to obtain licenses for any licenses in arrears on the shelf, if the licenses are available on the License Manager/Server. The audit may be operated on the shelf at any time in the 15-minute interval starting at the audit time set in this step. 12. Click OK. Perform the following steps to acquire the licenses on the 6500 right away instead of waiting for the daily audit to occur. 13. Select the License Information tab of the Shelf Licensing application. 14. Click Operate Audit. 15. Click OK in the Operate License Audit dialog box. The 6500 shelf acquires all the available licenses from the License Manager/Server.
At the center of this process is a dedicated interface within the Ciena customer portal which allows you to manage and activate your licenses.
Ciena has developed a simplified, single process for ordering, managing and deploying Ciena licensed features that will be utilized by a number of products going forward. This document provides you with
