1 Memo Date: July 11, 2016 To: From: Re: Parish Business Managers Tom Hardy, Director, Office of Information Technology Windows 10 Upgrade Information As many of you are aware, Microsoft is making Windows 10 available as a free upgrade for compatible devices that are running genuine Windows 7 Service Pack 1 or Windows 8.1 Update. The free upgrade is a full version of Windows (not a trial or introductory version) and is available until July 29, Once you upgrade, you ll have Windows 10 for free on that device. For parishes performing the upgrade on their own or using outside support options, we ve attached an information packet that may help with the upgrade steps and options. This document has also been posted for download to the knowledgebase area of the archdiocese ticketing system at this link. 4 Summary The purpose of this document is to provide a quick reference guide to updating Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1 to Version 10 during the free upgrade period ending July 29, This is not comprehensive and we have taken reasonable steps to ensure its accuracy. This document will be updated as more information and feedback is provided. Requirements OS Windows 7 SP1 Windows 8.1 Hardware Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster processor RAM: 1 GB for 32-bit RAM: 2 GB for 64-bit Storage: 16 GB for 32-bit Storage: 20 GB for 64-bit Computer Information OS Version: OS Update: Windows 7 OS Update: Windows 8 Pre Upgrade Options: Create Media or Direct Download Create Media Summary: Create media that can be reused on each computer requiring the upgrade. Use Case: For sites with limited internet or a large number of machines Reason: To limit the end user impact on the shared internet connection. Direct Summary: Download the update to each machine. Use Case: For sites with a limited number of machines or a large internet connection. Reason: Minimal impact on end user. 3

5 Create Media Requirements (either, not both) Burnable DVD Dual Layer 8 Gig USB Stick Steps Download the media creation tool: Find the downloaded tool in your system s default download folder and Run the application Choose Yes 4

6 Accept the license terms Select the Create installation media option and choose Next to continue 5

7 Be sure the options read as follows and choose Next to continue Note: You may have to uncheck the Use the recommended options setting in order to modify the selections (i.e. to be able to change the Architecture setting). At this point, you will need to choose a platform for creating your Windows 10 installation media either downloading the installation files directly onto a (blank, 8GB or greater) USB flash drive or onto your system as an.iso file (which you will then use to create an installation DVD from). Both scenarios will be shown in the following pages 6

8 Creating Media on a USB Flash Drive Connect an 8GB or greater USB flash drive into your system. The flash drive should either be blank or only contain data that may be overwritten. Choose the USB flash drive option and click Next to continue Be sure the flash drive is detected under the Removable drives and choose Next 7

9 The installation files will begin downloading Note: Contrary to the information on the download screen, it is advisable to NOT use your PC for anything else during this step so that you receive a clean download of the installation files. Various screens may be present during this period. Be patient and allow the system time to create the installation media. When complete, you will see a screen similar to the one below choose Finish (Jump to page 12 to continue these instructions) 8

10 Creating Media on a DVD Place a blank DVD into your system. Choose the ISO file option and click Next to continue Select the location on your system where the installation.iso file will be downloaded and choose Save. 9

11 The installation.iso file will begin downloading Note: Contrary to the information on the download screen, it is advisable to NOT use your PC for anything else during this step so that you receive a clean download of the installation files. Be sure a blank DVD is in your system and the.iso location is highlighted and choose Finish 10

12 Various screens may be present during this period. Be patient and allow the system time to create the installation media Burn the ISO to Disk 11

13 Once the media (USB or DVD) has been created, insert it into a computer to begin the Setup process accepting all of the default settings. Choose the Not right now option and click Next Choose Accept 12

14 Be sure screen reads as follows and choose Install 13

15 The installation will begin. Direct Download the installer: Run the application. Choose Yes 14

16 The upgrade process will begin downloading the necessary files The upgrade process will then verify the files downloaded 15

17 The in-place pre-upgrade will then begin installing [Reboot] Accept the license terms 16

18 The automated pre-upgrade installation process will continue Upgrade After Pre Upgrade complete the actual window update begins and requires no user input. 17

19 Choose Next at the Welcome to Windows 10 screen Choose Use Express settings 18

21 Clean Install After a computer has been upgraded to Windows 10, its license has been upgraded on the Microsoft servers. It will from then on be able to activate and new clean install of Windows 10. The upgrade is required unless another license is purchased separately. 20
