3 Generally This guide prepared for ITSS/MIS classes.all this steps should be fallow exactly. If you do not get any problem during to installation you should be finish all tasks less than 30 minutes or less. This installation only for Windows 8.0 or higher OS, if you are still using Windows XP or Windows7 unfortunately you need to upgrade your OS first and come back to this step. SQL Server has several versions we are going to use SQL server Standard Edition SQL Standard Edition 2017 Overview SQL server is one of the larger utilized well know relational database developed by Microsoft and runs on Windows platform recently they are working on Linux platforms as well. There are several version of SQL available for different use case. SQL Server 2017 represents a major step towards making SQL Server a platform that gives you choices of development languages, data types, on-premises or cloud, and operating systems by bringing the power of SQL Server to Linux, Linux-based Docker containers, and Windows. SQL server and its components are not our scope and will not teach in classroom however if you are interesting about more details here is the good documentation link to start; Hardware and Software Requirements o SQL Server Standard Edition Requirements Installations on Windows require at least 4GB of RAM, but preferably 8 GB and x64 processor only and 6 GB disk Space ; for more details ; Other SQL Editions This guide covers installation of the Express, which is suitable for most classes. Other versions of SQL such as Enterprise and Web editions also available on Microsoft Image for your collection. Page 3 of 38

4 PART I Downloading SQL Server 2017 Edition from Microsoft Imagine This section guides you through downloading SQL Server Standard editions from Microsoft s Imagine website. You need to use JSOM Microsoft Image account. Microsoft Image ( AKA DreamSpark); Microsoft Imagine Premium is a Microsoft Program that allows eligible students, faculty and staff to download and install fully-licensed versions of certain Microsoft programs onto their personal computers for educational purposes. Examples of available programs include Windows 10, Visio, Project, Visual Studio,SQL and many others. There are several way to install SQL server into your computer ; if you do not want to use JSOM Microsoft Image premium account you may go to Microsoft web site download the.iso or.exe file into your computer and start from there,this free version is called SQL Server 2017 RTM (Release to Manufacture) version wchich is full version but only limited with 180 days. Here is the link for RTM version ; I am going to focus on licensed version which you all you can utilize end of your school carrer If you are planning to get any other BI and Analytic classes high likely you need this version installed on your computer. 8 After The login you should see available Microsoft products for you and it should be seen like ; Ones you able to login and access to Portfolio page you can select the SQL Server 2017 Standard edition. Page 8 of 38

9 Step 2: Downloading the Installer AS soon as when you select our option shopping card will be appear like this ; If you haven t login until the this step, as soon as when you add package in your basket UTD login web site will be pop-out ; please login with your UTD credentials and continue to shopping Page 9 of 38

10 Select Check Out and either burn your own DVD or download the.iso file into your computer Page 10 of 38

11 After the downloaded ends you will get from Microsoft about product and its product key whoever SQL server comes with own product key and you don t need to type any product key. Before the start any installation please make sure your account is administrator if not you may ending with failure due to lack of enough permissions. I hope you remember location of the downloaded file,many web browsers give the option of executing a recently downloaded file directly from the browser. If your browser gives you that option, that will likely be the quickest and easiest. For example, Google Chrome gives the option as illustrated below, and all that s needed is to click on the filename. Downloading process may takes 3-5 minutes after the downloading process done Please go ahead find location of the file, you will see the file is.iso extension it cannot be run by windows we must mount the file first therefore please right click the file and select mount option form mouse pop-up menu. You should see something like this ; Now you able to access installable SQL files. Page 11 of 38

12 Installing SQL Server Standard 2017 Edition Now that you ve downloaded the installer, you ll need to execute it and follow the on screen prompts to install SQL Server. Step 3: Starting the Installer First page is shows hardware and software requirements if your compute very old perhaps checking requirements are not bad idea. For installation we need to move Planning tab and select Installation option Page 12 of 38

13 Under the installation page you can see multiple options coming we are going to install two of the component from this page as you all know SQL server is client-server architecture therefore we need Server and client components to accomplish our installation Let start with server installation; I assume you haven t install any SQL version before ; if you did already please chose other proper options such as upgrade. 14 Step 4: Progressing Through the Installation Wizard Click to file, the installer will display an installation wizard as something similar to the following: Select Next to pass this page Page 14 of 38

17 After the required installation files checked system will also check the installation rules during to this part you may have some warning such as firewall or domain controller etc. if there is no error please fallow the next step. Select Next to pass this page Page 17 of 38

18 Future Selection page is the most important page if your setup is failing some reason you can see why here right hand side shows required disk space and other windows files if they are not in the system you may end with failure. From this page we are going to select only two feature what they are Database Engine Service and Client Tools connectivity please check them both before the next page Page 18 of 38

26 PART II Installing SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) SQL Server developed in client-server architecture such as database itself is the server and interaction with the data and the capability to add, modify, delete, and access the data is required client functions. Microsoft provides SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) for client s management tools which you will install in this section. SSMS is very capable and provides many powerful conveniences and capabilities. Step 1: Going back to Page 26 of 38

28 Click the Download SQL Server Management Studio link to download its installer, and save the file to a location you can remember again. Page 28 of 38

29 Step 2: Completing the SSMS Install Once downloaded, run the SSMS installer from your browser, or directly by double clicking it in Windows Explorer. The first screen that appear is shown below. I tis very straight forward installation and doesn t required any additional feedback from you. Click the Install button to begin. A progress screen will appear similar to the following. 31 Congratulations! SSMS is now installed. You may now close this window, as well as the SQL Server Express installation Window from Part I,Step 4. Page 31 of 38

32 Using your Local Database You have installed both SQL Server and SSMS. There are just a few more steps you need in order to start using your database to complete assignments connecting to your database and creating a database for assignments. Step 3: Connecting to your Database To do anything at all with your database, you must first connect to it. SSMS is accessible under All apps/microsoft SQL Server 2017/Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio, as illustrated in the screenshot below. Page 32 of 38

33 Click on the icon to run SSMS. When SSMS first runs, it will ask you for the server name, as illustrated below. Under Local Servers, expand Database Engine and select the SQL Server instance you just installed. It will be of the form YourMachineName\SQLEXPRESS, as illustrated below. Click the OK button to fill in the server name, then click the Connect button to connect. After doing so, you will see a connection to your database on the left hand side, under Object Explorer, similar to the below screenshot. Page 33 of 38

35 PART III Restoring Practice SQL Database During to class lab time we are going to use practice database. Microsoft provides very useful database called AdventureWorks2012 this database available in lab computers also. Please download this database from my web page to make sure all student uses same data set. Original web site has different versions and students get very confuse. Go to Faculty web page ( and 1. Download AdventureWork2012.bak file into your own computer under the below folder ; 2. C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL14.SQLSERVER\MSSQL\Backup 3. And run SSMS 4. Login into SMMS 5. Go to database line left side of the screen under the object explorer and right click the database and select Restore Database 6.New Restore Database window will be appear ; from new window select Device Radio button and click blue square box on the right hand side as soon as when you click the square box another select backup devices window will show up for file location. 37 7.From new select backup device window, select add option and file should be in there if you copied file in correct directory. From right section select AdventureWorks2102.bak file press OK 8. OK selection will you bring previous screen. Select Ok again. 9. Select one more time OK from Restore Database window. Page 37 of 38

38 10. You should have finial installation complete message like this ; Congrats you are ready for class.
