3 10/100Mbps 2Port USB2.0 MFP Server STEP 1 Introduction This document describes how to install and configure PLANEX Mini MFP USB MFP Server (in the following referred to as Server) as a Print/File/Scan server and the MFP Server Control Center Software (in the following referred as Control Center) Please refer to the User s Manual in the bundled CD for more details This document is only for Windows users If you use this Server in Unix/Linux please refer to the User s Manual in the bundled CD for more details Package Contents If any item is missing please contact the shop where you bought this Server Mini PU CD ROM (User s Manual & Utility) Quick Installation Guide AC Adapter Warranty Card OS Requirements Windows SE/ME/ /XP/ Unix Linux Apple OS X x and RFC LPD System STEP 1 / Mbps Port USB MFP Server 1

4 STEP 1 10/100Mbps 2Port USB2.0 MFP Server Physical Description Power Adaptor Connector: DC IN V/ A adaptor Reset Button: print the configuration page and initialize this Server Ethernet Connector: a twisted pair category cable USB Host Ports: USB / low full and Hi Speed compliant Indicators Power Indicator is lit while power is applied If it is not lit or if it blinks there is a problem with this Server or power adapter Link Status is lit while network is applied If it is not lit it indicates that this Server does not connect to the network Status Indicator blinks to indicate network activity USB Indicator is lit while a USB device connects to USB Port of this Server If it is not lit or if it blinks there is a problem with the USB device or this Server USB Indicator is lit while a USB device connects to USB Port of this Server If it is not lit or if it blinks there is a problem with the USB device or this Server Connect The Server Connect this Server to the network such as a LAN switch or a LAN hub using a LAN cable Connect this Server to USB printers hard drives or flash ROM disks and HP all in one series printers (AIO/MFP) using USB cables Connect this Server to the power jack using the power adaptor (included in this package) 2 Mini-MFP

5 10/100Mbps 2Port USB2.0 MFP Server STEP 1 Install Control Center Insert the included CD into the personal computer The Autorun screen as Figure should appear Figure : Autorun Click Install Utility button Click Next if you see any Next button in installation windows Click Finish Configure This Server with Control Center Using Control Center (Figure ): Figure : MFP Server Control Center Software Open Control Center It will automatically search the existing Servers and display their statuses Select the Server that you want to configure Double click the selected Server and enter Administrator (default: admin) and Password (default: ) STEP 1 / Mbps Port USB MFP Server 3

6 STEP 1 10/100Mbps 2Port USB2.0 MFP Server Name your Server and select a codepage for file server function as Figure Please enter the Server s Host Name and Workgroup Name for Windows networking by SMB protocol The default Host Name is Mini MFP and Workgroup Name is WORKGROUP If you want to use the file server function you have to set the same codepage as that your Windows PC is using Figure : Set Server Name and Codepage Assign IP address to this Server as Figure Please choose one method to set the IP address of the Server You can automatically get IP by using DHCP or manually assign an IP to the Server Figure : TCP/IP Setting 4 Mini-MFP

7 Set Up Printers 10/100Mbps 2Port USB2.0 MFP Server STEP 1 You can set up your network printer using steps below Step Set up Local Windows Printer Driver Step Connect Your Printer to the Server and Connect the Server to Network Step Turn on Your Printer and the Server Step Turn on Online Use Printer in Installed Windows Printer Driver Step Add Network Printer by Windows Standard Method Control Center Step Configure Your Server Note: If you want to install HP all-in-one series printer drivers in Windows, you are advised to connect the MFP to PC during installation. Add Network Printer A Use Add Printer Function of Control Center Start Control Center select your Server and click Add Printer (Figure ) Figure : Add Printer STEP 1 / Mbps Port USB MFP Server 5

8 STEP 1 10/100Mbps 2Port USB2.0 MFP Server Select USB Port or USB Port in Add printer box choose to use IP Address or Host Name to represent the Server in printer port and select Print with LPR (Line Printer Remote) Print with Raw TCP /JetDirect Mode or Print with Network Path (SMB) in Select the network printing protocol box (Figure ) Figure : Printer Setting for MFP Server Control Center If your Server is running on a different LAN than your Windows PC you must choose IP address in Select IP Address or Host Name in printer port box SMB Protocol is compatible with Windows SE/ME/ / XP/ LPR and Raw TCP protocols are compatible with Windows /XP/ Click Apply Select the desired printer driver and click Set Port to Printer Click OK If you cannot find any printer driver in Printer List please install your printer driver first or click Add New Printer to install the printer driver 6 Mini-MFP

9 10/100Mbps 2Port USB2.0 MFP Server STEP 1 B Use Standard Windows Add Printer Wizard Windows Platform: Windows SE/ME/ /XP/ Network Printing Protocol: SMB/CIFS Open Printers and Faxes Right click the printer for which you want to change settings and then click Properties Click the Ports tab Clear Enable bidirectional support and click Create a new port and then click Local Port in the Port Type section In the Port Name box type the path to the printer in the following format: \\ Server s Host Name\printer name or \\ Server s IP address \printer name (Please refer to the Server s Web pages or Control Center to know the exact path) For example: if you set the Server s Host Name as Mini MFP and printer name (USB port) as Photosmart then the network path is expressed as: \\Mini MFP\Photosmart as shown in Figure Figure : Printer Setting for Local Port If your Server is running on a different LAN than your windows PC you have to type IP address in Port Name box Click OK and then select a Windows driver for your printer If you already have the printer s driver installed you will be asked whether to keep it or to replace it Click Next Choose whether you want to share the printer with other network users Do you want to print a test page? Select the appropriate radio button and click Next and Finish STEP 1 / Mbps Port USB MFP Server 7

10 STEP 1 10/100Mbps 2Port USB2.0 MFP Server Use File Sharing File System: This Server supports a file format of FAT / / It does not support a drive formatted by NTFS etc Naming Your Storages: The local drives of the two storages in USB port and USB port are named as USBx_DyPz where USBx represents the USBx port Dy represents the the y th Disk and Pz represents the z th partition Setting Codepage: This Server supports Windows codepages If you want to communicate files with this Server you have to set your Server codepage to be same as the codepage that your Windows PC is using Using SMB Method for Sharing Storages Connect a USB storage device to this Server Select My Network Places Click Display the Computers of Workgroup Double click Microsoft Windows Network icon Double click the Workgroup that this Server belongs to The default Workgroup Name is WORKGROUP You can refer to Control Center or this Server s Web pages to get it You will see that the Server will be displayed as the default Host Name "Mini MFP" or the Host Name that you set If you cannot find Workgroup Name or Host Name in Microsoft Windows Network you can select Search Computer in My Network Places and type the Server s Host Name or IP address (eg default Host Name Mini MFP) to find it Double click the Host Name icon The folders will be displayed as USB _DyPz and USB _DyPz where Dy represents the y th disk and Pz represents the z th partition with respect to USB port and USB port 8 Mini-MFP

11 10/100Mbps 2Port USB2.0 MFP Server STEP 1 If you clear Enable Server Authentication in Enable SMB/CIFS Print/File Server you login to the SMB Server without requiring authentication; otherwise you have to type user name and password to login to the Server You can add user name and password in User Account list by using Control Center or the Server s Web pages Note: If you use SMB on Windows 98 SE/ME, you must login to your Windows 98 SE/ME using the same user name as in the Server s User Account. Open Paste Remove or Copy files to the shared folders Using FTP Method for Sharing Storages Open Microsoft IE In Web Address List type command: ftp://server s Host Name or ftp:// Server s IP address If you have changed the default FTP port : you have to add the new port number in the tail of command as ftp://server s Host Name:ftp port or ftp://ip address of Server: ftp port The shared folders will be listed in IE If you set Enable Server Authentication in Enable FTP Server you must enter user name and password to login to the Server; if you set Allow Anonymous Login you can use the user name anonymous to login with Read Only permission If you clear Server authentication you do not need user name or password to login to the Server You can add user name and password in User Account list by Control Center or the Server s Web pages Open Paste Remove or Copy files to the shared folders STEP 1 / Mbps Port USB MFP Server 9

13 10/100Mbps 2Port USB2.0 MFP Server STEP 1 Upgrade Firmware Procedure A: Using the Control Center Open Control Center It will automatically search the existing Servers and display their statuses Select the Server that you want to upgrade the firmware Double click the selected Server and enter Administrator (default: admin) and Password (default: ) Select the Maintenance button Click Open to find your new firmware file and click Upgrade to start upgrading the firmware Wait for seconds for system reboot Procedure B: Using the Server s Web Pages Power on the Server Suppose that the Server is in DHCP mode Check the Server's IP address First run Control Center It will automatically search for Servers on the LAN Then Servers IP addresses will be shown in Control Center Run any Web browser like Microsoft Internet Explorer Go to s IP address or s Host Name to access the Server's home page Click CONFIG at the top of the menu Login the Server with Administrator (default: admin) and Password (default: admin) Click Maintenance Click Upgrade Firmware Click Browse button to choose the file of new firmware Click Upload button to start firmware upgrade Wait for seconds for system reboot STEP 1 / Mbps Port USB MFP Server 11

14 STEP 1 10/100Mbps 2Port USB2.0 MFP Server Procedure C: Using the Reset Button and the TFTP Client Plug in the power adaptor while pressing the Reset button until LED indicators of USB and USB blink Please note that after that the Server will operate using the factory default values after restarting i e your Server s configuration will recover to Factory Default values Start the TFTP client Tool: Image Burner Type the Server s Fallback IP address: and click Open Image to open your new firmware Please note that you must configure your PC s TCP/IP such that PC and the Server belong to the same LAN i e PC s IP is xxx and subnet mask is Click Upload Image Wait for Image Uploading to finish and then click Close Plug off the power adapter and then plug in the power adapter to restart the Server 12 Mini-MFP
