1 ABOUT YOUR TRACERCO PED The TRACERCO PED range is a family of personal electronic dosimeters. Each PED measures radiation equivalent dose, Hp(10), accumulated in X and gamma radiation fields in the energy range of 33keV to 3MeV and in dose rates between 0.1 µsv/h and 100 msv/h. The PED family: PED+, PED Blue and PED-IS The TRACERCO PED family reflects TRACERCO S 50 years of experience in industrial and environmental radiation measurement by combining new design features with major advances in display technology to increase ease of operation in the field. The Geiger Müller tube is used for radiation detection and the device has been specially designed to be lightweight but robust. The soft polymer case is resistant to chemicals and offers a high level of protection for use in all environments. This manual describes both the PED Blue and the PED+ products. The PED Blue is TRACERCO S standard model in the PED family and functions as a full featured personal dosimeter. The PED+ is TRACERCO S advanced personal dosimeter and provides all of the functions of the PED Blue but also introduces the following additional features: Bluetooth connection capability for use in conjunction with DoseVision Live for Android devices Page 6 of 53

Built in GPS monitoring for logging location information along with dose data Wireless charging facility allowing the PED+ to be charged without a wire connection Pop-up alarm messages which are customisable for individual user scenarios A special handheld mode which allows the PED+ to be used as a portable dose rate meter Note: The Tracerco PED-IS is the PED family member approved for use in hazardous areas and is not covered by this manual. A separate manual for the PED-IS is available from Tracerco. Page 7 of 53

2 TRACERCO PED OPERATION 2.1 PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION (1) System check light LED will periodically flash green while the TRACERCO PED is functioning correctly. The LED will flash red if the instrument is in a critical status (see section for possible critical status messages). (2) Dose rate alarm light Flashes amber while the amber dose rate alarm is exceeded. Flashes red while the red dose rate alarm is exceeded. (3) Dose alarm light Flashes amber or red for active dose alarms. Will continue to flash until the data has been transferred to a PC, using DoseVision. (4) Screen An AMOLED screen is used to display readings and menus. The screen can be programmed to display the information you want using DoseVision. See section 5.4 for maintenance tips. Page 8 of 53

(5) Case The TRACERCO PED case is constructed from a robust, durable polymer. See section 5 for maintenance tips. (6) Button The TRACERCO PED utilises a single button for selection and navigation. A long press is used to turn on the TRACERCO PED, open the menu system and to make a selection. A short press is used to scroll. This button is also used to silence alarms. (7) Speaker The speaker is used for audible alarms. (8) Geiger Müller tube window The Geiger Müller tube has a small window to allow increased low energy response. (9) Clip The clip is used for fixing the TRACERCO PED to the user s clothing. (10) USB socket The socket allows the device to be connected to a PC or mains adapter using a standard micro USB cable in order to transfer data and charge in the instrument. 2.2 WEARING THE TRACERCO PED The TRACERCO PED is worn on the user s upper body in order to function correctly as a personal dosimeter. The PED Blue should always be worn in this way as it is only calibrated for upper body use. The clip may be used to fix the TRACERCO PED to the user s belt or some other area of work clothes. The TRACERCO PED must be worn with the screen facing outwards. It is best to wear the TRACERCO PED on the outer layer of clothing for easy readings and to make sure alarm lights are visible. Note: The PED+ may be used as a handheld dose rate monitor and in this scenario does not need to be worn on the body. However, it must be switched into its handheld mode so that the reading is compensated for off-body operation. See section 0 for more information. The clip may be removed by simply pulling one side of the clip saddle away from the TRACERCO PED. The clip is reinstalled by pushing the clip saddle fixing points into the small cavities on either side of the rear of the TRACERCO PED. To offer additional security a lanyard may be fixed to the clip hinge section. Page 9 of 53

2.3 START UP AND SHUT DOWN To turn the TRACERCO PED on, press & hold the button for a few seconds until the status bar says 100%. During start up a screen showing the assigned user is displayed, assuming there are no alarms or warnings present. This screen is followed by a button operation message. The alarms are tested when the TRACERCO PED is starting up, so the device should flash, vibrate and make a loud beep sound. The readings screen is automatically displayed after start up. If the dose stored on the TRACERCO PED is higher than the dose alarm level the TRACERCO PED will bypass the start-up screens to go straight to the readings screen and sound the alarm and beep. The TRACERCO PED is turned off by entering the main menu and selecting the switch off option. See section 2.5 for menu navigation. 2.4 READINGS SCREEN The readings screen can be changed in order to select the information which is presented to the user. The screen is selected by entering the settings menu and selecting the screen for the Display Type menu. See section 2.5 for menu navigation. Three different screen layouts are available: Combined dose and dose rate (this is the default screen layout) Dose rate only (includes peak dose rate) Dose only (includes stay time) Depending on the screen layout selected, the following information may or may not be shown: Peak reading Page 10 of 53

2.5 TRACERCO PED NAVIGATION SCREENS To enter the menu, press and hold the button whilst viewing the main readings screen. Main menu Press button to scroll then hold to select Settings / status menu Press to scroll then hold to select Note: If the PED is left showing any screen other than the main readings screen, after 45 seconds of inactivity, the PED will return to showing the main readings screen automatically. This can be delayed a further 45 seconds with a short press of the button. Page 12 of 53

2.6 TRACERCO PED FUNCTIONS Alarms The TRACERCO PED has two adjustable alarm levels for dose rate and up to four adjustable levels for dose. The alarm levels can be set using the DoseVision software. The LED for dose rate alarms will flash amber when the first alarm is reached and red for the second alarm. See section 0 for how the dose rate alarm LED is positioned. The LED for dose alarms will flash amber when the first two alarms are reached and red for the higher two alarms. For the very top dose alarm (dark red) the dose alarm LED will stay on constantly. See section 0 for how the dose alarm LED is positioned. The TRACERCO PED will make a loud beeping noise for the audio alarm. The dose rate alarms will continue until the dose rate drops below the alarm level. The dose alarm will continue until the total dose history has been transferred to the PC using DoseVision. If the TRACERCO PED button is pressed during an alarm the audio alert will be silenced and the vibrate alert will stop. The relevant LED will continue to be activated. Dose and dose rate alarm levels are checked every second. The TRACERCO PED alarm settings may be viewed in the alarm levels screen. See section 2.5 for navigation to this screen. The alarm settings may only be changed via the DoseVision software. Page 13 of 53

2.6.2 Pop-up alarm messages (PED+ only) The PED+ allows alarm messages to be configured so that when an alarm is triggered, a message related to the specific alarm is shown. This can be used to help the user make important decision based on their measured radiation exposure. See section for instructions on how to configure and enable the alarm messages. When alarm messages are enabled, if a dose or dose rate alarm is activated, the screen will immediately switch to a screen that will indicate the type and colour of the alarm and also the custom message associated with the alarm. A single press of the button will switch of the alarm sounder and vibration but the message screen will still be shown. A long button press will clear the alarm message and return to the main readings screen. If the alarm message is left on screen then after the usual screen timeout, the PED will return to showing the main readings screen. Page 14 of 53

2.6.3 Tasks A special function of the TRACERCO PED is the capability to allow users to monitor dose and peak dose rate over particular time periods or tasks. Tasks are started from the Task Menu screen. See section 2.5 for navigation to this screen. Tasks will continue to record, until stopped by the user. When a task is running, the current accumulated dose value since the task started with be shown on the top bar of the readings screen, alternating with the top bar information. Current tasks are highlighted by a green light. A trefoil/stop watch icon shows completed tasks. Current and completed task details may be viewed by selecting that task. It is possible to record up to 9999 tasks on the TRACERCO PED. The four most recent tasks may be reviewed through the task details screen. Note: All task data logging periods may be displayed when data is viewed in DoseVision. Task details may be cleared from the TRACERCO PED after data has been transferred to the PC using the DoseVision software Flip screen function To aid the user in viewing readings during operations the TRACERCO PED has the special capability to flip the orientation of the screen. See section 2.5 for navigation to this function Screensaver The TRACERCO PED screensaver is a blank screen. The screensaver can be switched off by pressing the TRACERCO PED button. The user may select the time period before screensaver activation. See section 2.5 for navigation to this screen. Note: TRACERCO recommend that the time period before screensaver activation should be kept as low as practical. Long periods of screen activity will reduce the lifetime of the PED screen and deplete the battery more quickly. Page 15 of 53

2.6.6 Power status The remaining battery capacity may be viewed in the power status screen. This screen also provides the user with an estimate of the run time left, both with the screensaver on or off. See section 2.5 for navigation to this screen. Note: The estimates run time are based on a battery monitoring algorithm and are therefore only approximate. The accuracy of the estimated run time also depends on the ambient temperature Monitor details The monitor details screen shows various useful pieces of information about the TRACERCO PED and its status. Calibration contact details can also be found here. See section 2.5 for navigation to these screens Time zone To make sure the dose history data is secure, it is not possible for the user to change the time and date stored on the TRACERCO PED. However, it is possible to change the displayed time to current local time through the time zone selection in the time zone screen. The time zone screen displays the current time, date and time zone. See section 2.5 for navigation to this screen. Note that the time and date stored on the TRACERCO PED can be set via the DoseVision software to the time (GMT) stored on the PC DoseVision is installed on. Page 16 of 53

2.6.9 Language selection A unique feature of the TRACERCO PED is the capability to change the displayed text language. See section 2.5 for navigation to this function Activity Sounder An activity sounder can be activated in this screen. Typical background radiation will produce approximately 12 counts per minute. The divide options allow the user to manage the click event interval. Selecting 1 means that a click is generated every time a radioactive particle is detected. Selecting 30 will give a click interval of about 2.5 minutes in background radiation Bluetooth (PED+ only) In order to use the DoseVision Live software with the PED+ the Bluetooth feature must be turned on. If the Bluetooth feature is turned off then the DoseVision Live software will not be able to detect the PED+ device. To switch on the Bluetooth function, navigate to the Bluetooth/GPS menu within the settings menu and ensure that the Bluetooth option is checked. If the Bluetooth feature is switched on, the Bluetooth icon will be shown alternating with the battery symbol on returning to the main readings screen. When a connection is made to the PED by DoseVision Live, the Bluetooth icon will be shown coloured blue. If there is no active connection to the PED then the icon will be shown coloured grey. Section 4 gives details of how to use DoseVision Live with the PED+. Switching on the Bluetooth feature will drain the battery more quickly. It is recommended that if DoseVision Live is not being used with the PED+ then the Bluetooth feature is switched off in order to extend the battery life. See for more information. Page 17 of 53

GPS logging (PED+ only) The PED+ contains and GPS module which can be used to log dose and dose rate data in relation to the user s current location. In order for location data to be logged, the GPS feature must be switched on. To switch the GPS feature on, navigate to the Bluetooth/GPS menu within the settings menu and ensure that the GPS option is checked. If the GPS feature is switched on, the GPS icon will be shown alternating with the battery symbol on returning to the main readings screen. Initially the GPS symbol will be shown coloured grey to show that GPS is enabled. When a location lock is achieved, the GPS symbol will turn green to show that location logging is in progress. When GPS is enabled and a location lock has been achieved, location data will be logged every time dose data is logged. This is determined by the type of logging which is currently set on the PED+. See section for more information on logging types. If no location lock can be achieved, then the dose data will still be logged normally but with no location data. Note: The GPS detection is limited by the constraints of GPS technology. To achieve a good signal lock the PED+ must be able to detect signals from GPS satellites. In most circumstances this means that the user must be outside to get a suitable location lock, however, sometimes a lock can be achieved when indoors near to external windows or doors. The ability to log location data will be subject to a number of environmental factors so TRACERCO cannot guarantee that location data will be logged in all scenarios. The accuracy of the location logs is also affected by the quality of the satellite signal received and the number of satellites which can be detected. The accuracy of the location logs can typically be to within 3.5m of the actual location, though this may be extended if GPS signal is poor. Switching on the GPS feature will drain the battery more quickly. It is recommended that location logging is not required then the GPS feature is switched off in order to extend the battery life. See for more information. Page 18 of 53

Handheld mode (PED+ only) The PED+ introduces an extra mode which allows it to be used as a handheld dose rate meter in addition to its use as a personal dosimeter. Handheld mode is accessible on all PED+ devices by default but access to it can be removed by using the DoseVision software (see section 3.7.3). When switched to handheld mode, the PED+ will provide a measurement of dose rate which is compensated for the fact that it is no longer being worn on the body. For this reason, when using the PED+ it should be held away from the body where possible. When switched to handheld mode, the PED+ is effectively measuring H*(10). Dose rate and as a result cannot be considered to be measuring personal dose. Personal dose is NOT accumulated whilst in handheld mode. If a constant personal dose measurement is required then the PED+ should be used in personal mode. To access handheld mode, navigate to the handheld mode menu item in the main menu. If the menu item is not available then it may need to be enabled using DoseVision (see section 3.7.3). The screen will automatically flip when switching into handheld mode. This is to encourage the user to hold the device with the GM tube window facing forwards or in the direction of the area being measured. The screen can still be flipped back by using the screen flip function in the main menu. To exit handheld mode and return to measuring personal dose, navigate to the main menu and select personal mode. Note: Dose rate alarms will still be activated in the same way as they are in personal mode and use the same alarm levels. When in handheld mode, the handheld mode screen will be displayed. This includes the following items: Handheld mode icon This indicates that the device is in handheld mode. When this icon is shown, personal dose accumulation has been suspended and will not continue until switched back to personal mode. Peak dose rate This is the peak dose rate experienced since the device was last reset using DoseVision. It is the same peak rate that is shown in personal mode. Page 19 of 53

Dose rate bar graph This bar graph represents the current dose rate and functions in the same way as the dose rate graphs shown in personal mode. The alarm thresholds are displayed in the green, orange and red. Dose rate reading This is the current dose rate measurement. The measurement is compensated for the device being worn away from the upper body. This reading is filtered in order to provide a stable reading. Activity graph In order to help detect quick changes in radiation fields, the activity graph is provided. This graph shows a rolling 30 second chart of the activity as measured by the GM tube. It can be used to give a visual picture of detected radiation. Each bar represents the number of counts detected within the last second. New bars will be added at the right hand side of the graph and will progress to the left. The graph will auto scale as activity changes Discrete mode There may be times when it is not appropriate to have audible and visual warnings of alarm conditions such as when they may cause distress to others or could draw unwanted attention. For these cases, a discrete mode is offered. When activated, all three LEDs will be permanently switched off and the sounder will never activate under any scenario. In addition, the screen will be set to a dimmer setting. When in discrete mode the vibration alert will still activate and on-screen indications will still be shown. Note that if the screensaver feature is switched on when using discrete mode, the screen will still wake on alarm, but the screen will switch on in its dimmed state. The discrete mode is not available to the user by default. It must be enabled using the DoseVision software. Once enabled, the discrete mode icon will be shown in the main menu as shown here. When the discrete mode is switched on, the icon will be shown with a cross through it. Page 20 of 53

2.7 TRACERCO PED ERRORS AND RECOVERY ACTIONS The TRACERCO PED has been designed to communicate to the user, through easy-to-understand messages, when the instrument has an error. The system check light on the top of the TRACERCO PED will flash green when the device is operating normally and red if the device has an error Status warning messages Status warnings are given when the TRACERCO PED is in a condition that requires action, but will still operate correctly. Status warning messages are displayed on the readings screen status bar. The possible status warning messages and appropriate actions are described in the table below. Warning message Battery Low Memory Low Calibration Due Default Cal Data Comments Remaining battery capacity is approximately 8 hours at background radiation levels. Memory low warning displayed when memory is more than 70% full. Indicates that more than one year has elapsed since previous calibration. Annual calibration is recommended. Note: this warning will only be given if the calibration warning feature is activate. This feature is disabled by default. Default (factory set) calibration values are set. Action The device should be recharged. Data should be transferred to PC using DoseVision. TRACERCO PED should be returned to TRACERCO for recalibration. TRACERCO PED should be returned to TRACERCO for calibration. Warning An undefined warning has occurred. Return to TRACERCO for full diagnosis Critical malfunction warnings A critical malfunction is a device error that will prevent accurate TRACERCO PED operation. If the TRACERCO PED is on when a malfunction occurs an alarm will sound to make the user aware. The malfunction alarm sound is shorter and less frequent beep than the radiation alarm beeps. The dose rate area of the readings screen will be replaced by a white cross on a red square background and the error will be stated. The Stay Time will be removed and a message saying Last Reading will be shown to indicate the last dose reading before the critical malfunction occurred. If a critical malfunction has occurred and the TRACERCO PED is turned off it is not possible to perform a full restart. Pressing the button will cause the relevant malfunction Page 21 of 53

message to be displayed at the opening screen. When the button is released (or after 1 second for a dead battery) the TRACERCO PED screen will switch off. The possible critical malfunction messages and appropriate actions are described in the table below. Warning message Comments Action Battery critical Detector failure Calibration Clock Failure System Failure This indicates that the battery charge is approaching a level where radiological performance cannot be guaranteed. The TRACERCO PED will shut down after 10 seconds. Further restarts should be avoided to preserve the internal clock. In order to recognise a GM tube malfunction in areas of extremely low background radioactivity, the TRACERCO PED will assume detector failure if no counts are recorded over a period of 2 minutes. Calibration factors are out of the recommended range of values. Real time clock failure. This may occur if the battery becomes fully drained. The device is experiencing a malfunction that may affect accuracy. The device must be recharged. If the user is confident the TRACERCO PED is in an area where normal levels of background radiation could be expected the device should be returned to TRACERCO for full diagnosis. TRACERCO PED should be returned to TRACERCO for re-calibration. The user will be prompted to reset the TRACERCO PED clock. Care must be taken to ensure that the reset time corresponds to the time on the PC used for data transfer using DoseVision. Return to TRACERCO for full diagnosis. Memory Full Warning displayed when memory is 95% Data must be transferred to PC. full. When memory is completely full the TRACERCO PED will continue to measure and display the true current accumulated dose, but new date/time information will not be recorded. Error An undefined error has occurred. Return to TRACERCO for full diagnosis. Page 22 of 53

2.7.3 Response to dose rate overload The TRACERCO PED will operate accurately in dose rates up to 100 msv/h (10 Rem/h). The accuracy of measured dose rates cannot be guaranteed above 100 msv/h so the measured dose rate is capped at 110mSv/h. This means that there is a possibility of inaccuracies in subsequent accumulated dose values from the time of overload until the data has been cleared and a new accumulation started. Due to the dose rate cap, the accumulated dose will be an under-read of the actual dose experienced by the user. During exposure above 100 msv/h the top of the readings screen will show Overload and dose rate will be displayed as >100mSv/h (note that the actual measured dose rate values will still be recorded and readable when transferred to a PC using DoseVision). Dose values will still be displayed, but will flash to indicate possible inaccuracies. The status bar will show a warning symbol and Dose Error? message. An alarm will sound continuously until the button is pressed. After exposure above 100mSv/h the top of the screen will return to standard conditions. The dose rate display will return to live values. Total dose values will continue to flash (this will only be cleared once the data has been transferred to the PC using the DoseVision software). The status bar will continue to show a warning symbol and Dose Error? message. This message will only be cleared once the data has been transferred to the PC using DoseVision. The alarm will continue to sound until the button has been pressed. Page 23 of 53

3.6 VIEWING LOCATION DATA (PED+ ONLY) The PED+ can log location data using its built-in GPS module. This data can be shown on a map in order to review dose and dose rate data with respect to the location at which it was logged. To view the map, select a user and show the data tab for that user (this will show the user s data graph). From here, click the map button to show the map. Note: DoseVision requires a working connection to the internet in order to be able to display the location data on a map. If an internet connection cannot be found, the map cannot be displayed. The map will be shown with logged data points shown. DoseVision will automatically adjust the map to attempt to show all of the data for the time period selected. With large numbers of data points navigation of the map may become slow. To ensure smoother operation, filter the data by date to show fewer points. If no data has been logged for the time period selected by the filter then the map will not be shown and a message will explain that there is no logged data. Page 28 of 53

3.6.1 Navigating the map The map can be navigated using the mouse or by using the buttons provided. To zoom in and out of the map, use the map zoom buttons or use the mouse scroll wheel if available. Double clicking on the map will also cause the map to zoom in. Unchecking the Satellite box will display the map without a satellite view and will show roads and place names only Data points Each time the PED+ logs a dose point (see section for data logging options) the location, dose rate and the status of any alarms are also logged. The DoseVision map will show a data point for each individual log. Each data point can be inspected by hovering the mouse pointer over the map point. This will show a box that will include the date and time that the point was logged at as well as values that depend on which of the display modes is selected from the map options bar. Alarms Each data point will be shown coloured with the highest priority alarm colour of all of the alarms active at the point when the data was logged. The hover-over box for this mode will display both the dose and the dose rate logged at the location. Dose rate Each point is coloured according to the dose rate logged at the location. All of the points shown are colour-graded from lowest to highest dose rate with the lower dose rates being coloured grey and the higher dose rates being coloured pink. The hover-over box for this mode will display the dose rate logged at the location. Dose Each point is coloured according to the dose logged at the location. All of the points shown are colour-graded from lowest to highest dose with the lower dose being coloured grey and the higher dose being coloured blue. 30 3.7 CHANGING TRACERCO PED SETTINGS WITH DOSEVISION Settings on the TRACERCO PED may be changed through the DoseVision software. Note that access to some of these functions is restricted to administrator level access (see section 0 for details). TRACERCO PED settings are changed in the Settings tab Alarm level settings The dose and dose rate alarm levels can be set in the Settings tab. After entering the new alarm level value into the box the Apply button must be clicked. There are always 2 configurable dose rate alarms but the user can select between 2 or 4 dose alarm levels using the controls provided. The alarms must be set in ascending order with the ordering of yellow, orange, red, crimson (dark red). A warning will be given if this is not the case. The units range for each alarm can be selected from the drop down control next to each box. This can be used to assist with entering alarm values without having to convert the value first. Hint: If fewer alarms are required two adjacent alarms can be set to the same value so that only the highest of the two will be activated. Page 30 of 53

3.7.2 Alarm messages (PED+ only) For PED+ devices, the alarm pop-up messages can be enabled and configured. The alarm messages are disabled by default. To enable the feature, check the Alarm Messages check box. This will show an alarm message button next to each alarm. To configure the message that is shown for each alarm, click on the message button next to the alarm required. Enter up to three lines of text into the text boxes shown and click ok. When alarm messages have been configured as require, click apply to send them to the device. Note: The length of each line of text is restricted in order to ensure that each line can be correctly shown on the PED+ screen. Note: The PED+ can only display pop-up messages that are made up of alpha-numeric characters. Non alpha-numeric characters will not be displayed correctly when the alarm message is show. TRACERCO cannot guarantee that all combinations of alarm messages will be shown correctly within the confines of the screen Handheld mode (PED+ only) DoseVision can be used to restrict access to the handheld mode on a PED+ device. This is useful when the user is expected to use the PED+ only as a dosimeter. Handheld mode is enabled by default on PED+. By unchecking the Allow Handheld Mode box and clicking Apply, the handheld mode menu option will not be available on the PED PED Options The PED options section allows a number of device options to be enabled or disabled on the device. These are: Discrete Mode Allows the discrete mode option to appear in the PED menu. Allow Peak and Dose Reset Allows the option to reset the peak dose rate value and accumulated dose value to appear in the PED settings menu (not recommended for accurate dose logging). Allow Log Reset Allows the option to delete the currently logged data on the PED to appear in the PED settings menu (not recommended for accurate dose logging). Page 31 of 53

3.7.5 Time settings The internal clock can be set using DoseVision. To do so, click the Set PED Time button on the settings tab. The time setting window will be shown. For the clock on the PED to display the correct time, the time zone must be selected. This can be achieved by clicking the time zone offset button or by clicking Use Local Time Zone. Clicking Use Local Time Zone will automatically use the local time zone value set on the PC. This takes into account daylight saving time if Windows is configured to automatically adjust for this. Before the time is set, the date and time that will be displayed on the PED will be shown on the time setting window. When this time is acceptable then the Set PED Time button can be clicked. This then sets the clock within the PED and configures the timezone. Note that if there are pending changes to be made to PED settings then these must be applied or cancelled before time setting will be allowed Data logging mode It is possible to change the TRACERCO PED data-logging mode in the Settings tab. Data is recorded by the TRACERCO PED in either Periodic Logging or Intelligent Logging mode. In Periodic Logging mode the TRACERCO PED will record the accumulated dose periodically depending on the logging period selected. Periodic Logging is not preferred when deployed in low dose rate areas as many data points will show zero changes and will unnecessarily use TRACERCO PED memory. Hint: Select Periodic Logging only if the TRACERCO PED is to be deployed in areas where the dose rate will be consistently above background, and/or rapid dose rate fluctuations are not anticipated. Whilst in intelligent logging mode the TRACERCO PED will log the accumulated dose for every 0.01 µsv change in dose. In normal circumstances the TRACERCO PED memory is used most efficiently by employing intelligent logging. Intelligent logging is the default mode on the TRACERCO PED. The logging mode is selected by clicking the desired mode in the settings tab then clicking the Apply button. Page 32 of 53

3.7.7 Changing TRACERCO PED units The units in which the TRACERCO PED displays dose and dose rate data can be changed between µsv (and µsv/h) and mrem (and mrem/h). This change is made by selecting the relevant Dose unit in the settings tab Setting the folder for data storage The folder used for storing dose history data is selected when DoseVision is installed for the first time. It is possible to change the data storage folder or create a new folder by clicking on the Set Data Folder button on the Settings tab. 3.8 USER SETTINGS In the Users tab, you can add, edit and delete users, view data and create reports Adding and Deleting Users Users may be created by typing the user name in the box on the Users tab and clicking OK. When you add a new user a User Details box will appear. You can then enter additional information about the user such as Date of Birth and Employment Number. This additional information will appear when Reports are created. (See 3.8.4) Users can be deleted by selecting the user from the list in the Users tab and clicking 'Delete'. Note: Doing this will mean that all of the user s data is lost Assigning Users to the PED It is possible to assign the TRACERCO PED to another user by selecting a user from the list and clicking on the 'Assign to PED' button. Page 33 of 53

3.8.3 Viewing User Data To view data from within the Users Tab, select the user from the list and click on the 'Graph' button User Reports To view a report for multiple users, click on the Report in the Users tab. The user can then select your chosen date range and pick users from the list. Reports can be generated in RTF or HTML format and either viewed on screen or added to an as an attachment. The preferred units can be selected for the report. 3.9 TRACERCO PED FIRMWARE AND SOFTWARE UPGRADES The latest version of the TRACERCO PED DoseVision Software and Firmware may be downloaded from the TRACERCO website ( Firmware Upgrades Once the latest firmware has been saved DoseVision may be used for installing it onto the TRACERCO PED. The firmware upgrade is performed by clicking the Upgrade Firmware button in the Settings tab and selecting the relevant.tfw file from the explorer window. The TRACERCO PED must be connected throughout this operation. Note: Care must be taken to download the correct firmware for the product. If an attempt is made to load the incorrect firmware into the device, a warning message will be given. The filename of the firmware file will indicate which products it can be loaded into. Page 34 of 53

3.10 ACCESS SECURITY Upon receipt of a TRACERCO PED the DoseVision software should be installed on a nominated Administrator PC. The TRACERCO PED is supplied without password protection. When a TRACERCO PED that is not password protected is in the dock, a password may be set using the Set Admin Password button in the Settings tab. User names are not associated with the password. The password is held in the TRACERCO PED and applies whichever PC the TRACERCO PED is connected to. Subsequent connection of password protected TRACERCO PEDs to the Administrator PC will not require password entry as the password will be cached on the PC. Access security for TRACERCO PEDs on the Administrators PC is effectively provided by the PC Windows login. Hint: The dose history data is normally downloaded to a folder in application data, which is visible only to the user who first runs DoseVision on the PC. If wider access is required for the dose history data the administrator can choose to change the data folder to a more public one, e.g. a folder within shared docs. See section for changing the data storage folder. If a TRACERCO PED that has had a password applied is connected to a different PC (with DoseVision installed) the password will be required to gain access to administrator level functions. User level functions can still be freely accessed. User level access is restricted to the following functions: Transferring and viewing current data Viewing old data for the assigned user that is stored on the PC Changing the data storage folder Exporting data Changing the data logging mode Setting the time zone Changing the TRACERCO PED measurement units Enabling the handheld mode Enabling the PED options Administrator level access to a TRACERCO PED can be acquired on any PC by clicking the Get Administrator Access button and giving the password. Once the password has been given for a particular TRACERCO PED, it is not necessary to re-enter it in the future as the password is cached on the PC. It is possible to view the password on a docked TRACERCO PED by clicking the Show Admin Password button on the advanced tab. This requires administrator level access and may be used when the user of a different PC requires administrator access and the password has been forgotten. In the unlikely circumstances of the administrator PC losing the cached password, Tracerco can provide a pass code that will allow the administrator to read the TRACERCO PED password. Click on the Get Forgotten Password button and follow the instructions. Page 35 of 53

4 DOSEVISION TM LIVE SOFTWARE (PED+ ONLY) DoseVision Live is an app design for use on the android platform which can be used in conjunction with the PED+ Bluetooth feature to allow remote monitoring of up to 7 PEDs at once in a local area. 4.1 RECOMMENDED HOST DEVICE REQUIREMENTS Operating systems Android Recommended screen size Other hardware requirements 1024 x 600 or greater for optimal viewing Bluetooth 4.2 INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE The DoseVision Live software is available for download and update through Google Play. It can be found by searching for DoseVision Live using the Google Play app. 4.3 PAIRING DEVICES Before a connection can be made with a PED+, the PED must be paired with the Android device. The exact details of the pairing process depend of the implementation of Android, but the usual method requires accessing the Bluetooth options from the Android settings menu. From here there should be an option to scan for devices. Ensure that the PED+ is switched on and that the Bluetooth feature is enabled (see section ). After starting a scan the PED+ device should appear in the list of found devices. The unique identifier for the PED+ can be found on the serial number label on the rear of the PED. When the device has been found, tap on the device in the Android menu. This will attempt to pair. To complete pairing, a message box will pop up to ask to confirm pairing. It may ask to confirm a PIN on the PED+ device, but it is not necessary to do this. Pressing OK should complete the pairing. Repeat this process if the device does not pair first time. Once paired, the PED+ will remain paired and will appear in the PED list of DoseVision Live each time the app starts. Page 36 of 53

4.4 MAKING CONNECTIONS To connect to a device, start the app and then click on the PED connection management button. The app will show a list of paired PEDs. Note: This is a list of PED+ devices that have been paired with the Android device. It does not represent a list of PEDs that can be found nearby. Locate the PED+ in the list and tap the device name to connect. The red cross icons shall change to a clock icon to show that a connection is being attempted. This may take a few second to connect and may also retry a few times before a connection is established. When a connection has been established, the clock icon will turn to a green tick. From the connection list, you can continue to connect to a total of 7 PEDs at any one time. Note: The connections to PEDs will remain connected whilst the PEDs are in range until the app is closed by pressing back until the exit message box is shown. 4.5 DISCONNECTING Once a PED+ is connected to the app, it can be disconnected by navigating to the Connection Management screen and tapping the PED s name. This shall turn the green tick to a red cross to show that the PED has been disconnected. Exiting the app will also close all connections. Page 37 of 53

4.6 OVERVIEW SCREEN From the connection screen, tap the Device Overview button to show the overview screen for the connected devices. Alternatively, go to the home screen and tap the PED Monitoring button. Swiping the screen up and down will allow visibility of all connected devices. 4.7 PED DETAIL SCREEN From the overview screen, it is possible to view the detail screen for each PED by tapping the box for the PED of interest. This screen will show a larger Dose Man and will give additional live detail from the PED. Page 38 of 53

4.8 ALARMS Whenever an alarm is triggered on a PED, the alarm status will be shown on the DoseVision Live app. Visually, the Dose Man will change colour to reflect the alarm. This makes it easy to identify the user whose alarm has been triggered from the overview screen. The dose or dose rate will also be highlighted with the alarm colour to indicate the type of alarm that has been triggered. The alarm visuals will be shown on both the overview screen and the detail screen. The app will also play an alarm sound when a new alarm is triggered. In order for the alarm sound to be heard, the Android device s volume must not be muted. When an alarm is activated, the alarm can be acknowledged and muted by tapping the mute button in the top right hand corner of the screen. This will mute the alarm sound until the next time a new alarm is triggered. To ensure that alarm sounds to not play, either turn down the volume on the Android device until all sounds are muted or check the Mute box on the Connection Management screen. 4.9 BLUETOOTH RANGE The range of communication is defined by the Bluetooth module in the PED+. The maximum range is expected to be up to 15 metres with no intermediate obstructions. The range of communication will be reduced if there are walls or other obstructions between the Android device and the PED+. If a PED+ is found to be out of range of the Android device then the Dose Man for the PED+ will be shown on the DoseVision Live app coloured grey. When this happens, the app will continue to search for the PED+ and if it is found, the app will continue to show live data from the PED. The Dose Man will return to green or its alarm colour to show that it has reconnected DOSEVISON TM LIVE TROUBLESHOOTING In the case of difficulties, the following troubleshooting points may assist: Problem Solution Cannot connect to a device Make sure that the PED+ is switched on and Bluetooth is enabled Make sure that the PED+ is in range of the Android device Make sure that no other Android device already has a connection to the PED+ If connection problems continue, try restarting the PED+ If connection problems continue, go to the Android menu and turn the Bluetooth of then on again If connection problems continue, try un-pairing the PED from the Android device and re-pairing Cannot see the PED+ in the device list Make sure that the PED+ is correctly paired with the Android device PED+ alarms do not make a sound on the Android device Make sure the volume is turned up on the Android device Make sure that the Mute check box is not ticked on the Connection Management screen Page 39 of 53

5 MAINTENANCE AND CALIBRATION The TRACERCO PED has been designed for reliable operation in harsh environments and should provide many years of effective service provided attention is paid to basic operational maintenance. 5.1 CHARGING THE TRACERCO PED The TRACERCO PED is charged by inserting it into a charger dock. The charger dock has a micro USB connection that will allow charging via a mains supply, 12v car supply or connection to a PC USB port. Note that only charger accessories supplied by TRACERCO are recommended. See section 0 for further information on TRACERCO PED accessories. During charging an estimation of battery capacity and a lightning flash icon is displayed. When the estimated battery charge is greater than 95% the display will show full charge. Active warning messages are also displayed during charge. A fully charged TRACERCO PED can be expected to last for greater than 160 hours in normal operating conditions before recharge is required. A low battery warning will be provided when only 8 hours remaining capacity is estimated. When the battery charge reaches a critically low level the TRACERCO PED will close down to preserve stored data. Further drain on the battery may result in loss of the TRACERCO PED real time clock. The user must not attempt to change the TRACERCO PED battery. Note that during charging the TRACERCO PED does not record data. Page 40 of 53

5.1.1 Wireless charging (PED+ only) The PED+ can be charged wirelessly using a Qi compatible wireless charger. In order to charge wirelessly, the clip must be removed and the rear surface of the PED+ must be placed in contact with the charging surface. When placed on a wireless charger, the PED+ may take a few seconds to recognise the charger after which the charging cycle will begin. Charging shall progress in the same way as for wired charging. Note: Depending on the charger used, wireless charging may take longer for a full charge cycle than wired charging. Due to the technology used, when charging wirelessly the PED+ may become warm. The PED+ should always be charged in a cool environment (no greater than 35 C) and out of direct sunlight. TRACERCO can only guarantee correct effective charging using recommended wireless chargers Battery life The PED contains a high capacity battery that can allow long periods of use between charges. However, number of hours run can be significantly affected by how the device is used. There are number of factors that can reduce the run time of the PED, the key factors that should be noted are as follows: Keeping the display on (screen saver switched off) Keeping the PED in elevated radiation fields (non-background dose rates) Enabling and connecting to the device via Bluetooth (PED+ only) Enabling the GPS feature (PED+ only) To extend the number of hours of run time the PED has TRACERCO recommend using the screensaver whenever possible and switching off Bluetooth and GPS when they are not required. The following table gives some approximate battery life estimates when working at background radiation levels: Feature status Battery life expected from fully charged Screen saver on Bluetooth off Approx. 300 hours GPS off Screen saver off Bluetooth off GPS off Screen saver on Bluetooth on GPS off Screen saver off Bluetooth on GPS on Approx. 70 hours Approx. 80 hours Approx. 20 hours Page 41 of 53

5.2 CLEANING The TRACERCO PED features a soft polymer over mould that has been manufactured from materials with excellent chemical resistance. The over mould may be cleaned by wiping with a slightly moistened cloth. A mild detergent may be used if required. 5.3 HANDLING While the TRACERCO PED has a tough design, unnecessary impacts, abrasions or contact with harmful chemicals should be avoided. TRACERCO recommend that the TRACERCO PED is transported in an approved case and pouch. See section 0 for further information on TRACERCO PED accessories. The user must not attempt to open the TRACERCO PED. The TRACERCO PED must be returned to TRACERCO for repair. 5.4 SCREEN PROTECTION The TRACERCO PED screen graphics have been designed to maximise screen life and minimise power consumption. However, TRACERCO recommend that the time period before screensaver activation should be kept as low as practical. Long periods of screen activity will reduce the lifetime of the TRACERCO PED screen. Page 42 of 53

5.5 CALIBRATION Ionising radiation legislation recommends that all operational radiation measurement devices are subjected to regular inspection and testing. This recommendation includes performance checks and where appropriate, recalibration of the monitor. The TRACERCO PED should be calibrated with the display screen facing the radiation beam. The position of the GM detector is clearly marked by the detector window near the bottom of the front face. An ISO phantom or suitable correction factor should be employed during calibration. Note that the calibration will be invalid if the TRACERCO PED is not worn on the torso when operating as a dosimeter. The TRACERCO PED must not be used as a handheld device unless it is set to handheld mode (PED+ only). See section 0 for more details. A special feature of the TRACERCO PED is the provision of a warning message to notify the user when calibration is due. The feature is disabled by default on PED Blue and PED+ devices. The next calibration due date may be found in the monitor details screen if the feature is enabled. Calibration contact details are also contained here. See section 2.5 for navigation to this screen. All TRACERCO PEDs are checked and calibrated immediately prior to despatch to the customer. Following this initial procedure (or the regular inspection and calibration check) TRACERCO operatives will re-set the next calibration check due date within the software of the PED. To assist in providing customers with a more efficient and comprehensive service, TRACERCO has developed a proprietary database, which holds records of all monitors supplied to customers, including details of inspections, repairs, replacements and calibrations. This database provides a cradle-to-grave history for the tracking of radiation monitors. TRACERCO has several calibration and repair facilities throughout the world.
