7 Change the way you use the computer Always use SHUTDOWN Never use Power Button Leave your computer on longer and more often ON 56watts (typical) Off 3 watts (monitor sleep/off) Power line spikes are no longer an issue and won t hurt the hard drive Turn OFF Sleep and Hibernation for Desktops and Laptops on AC Power Sleep mode and hibernation modes are only short term solutions for business people Give Windows a chance to do it s job by leaving it run: Updating files, scanning for viruses and malware TIP: I turn my computers on in the am and off at bedtime I leave them on overnight 1 night a week I run Quick Computer Tune-up checklist every month 1/19/2011 7

12 Pick a location - I recommend DVD (E: Drive) or USB Flash Drive Insert DVD or connect USB Flash Drive/External Drive Do not pick your Recovery partition (D: Drive) Select the files to backup Windows recommended is best Files in libraries and personal folders for all users My Documents, Favorites, Desktop Allow Windows to format your DVD Sit back and drink a cup of coffee May take up to a half-hour or more? 31 Open Windows Explorer START All Programs Accessories Windows Explorer Navigate to the My Documents folder and click once on it to highlight In Vista and Windows 7 it is located at C:\Users\%username%\My Documents In Windows XP it is located at C:\Documents and Settings\%username\My Documents Click and Hold the left mouse button while dragging the My Documents folder to the USB or external drive. Then release the left mouse button. The files will begin to be copied to the new location. It may take an hour or so, depending on the number of files being copied. NOTE: This is the only way to copy to CD/DVD in Windows XP 1/19/
