4 Introduction The 7.11 release of the PowerSchool Student Information System (SIS) includes enhancements and resolutions to previously identified issues. Installation Notes The installer setup files for this release are available for download from PowerSource. If you are upgrading from PowerSchool 7.8.x x you will need: PowerSchool 7.11 Application Installer If you are upgrading from PowerSchool 7.0.x through 7.7.x you will need: PowerSchool Database Scripts Updater PowerSchool 7.11 Application Installer If you are performing a new installation, you will need: PowerSchool Database Installer PowerSchool 7.11 Application Installer Note: PowerSchool 7.11 does not support upgrading from PowerSchool 6.x. If your district is using PowerSchool 6.x, you must upgrade to PowerSchool before upgrading to PowerSchool For more information, see the Installation Guide for PowerSchool 7.x available on PowerSource. Note: If Schools Interoperability Framework (SIF) is enabled on your system, an update to the latest SIF adapter is required. 5 Use the PowerSchool installer to manage your PowerSchool deployment. It installs the database and application for a specific server, and it configures per-server settings such as database and web server ports, passwords, and file paths. PowerSchool System Requirements If this is the first time you are installing PowerSchool, review the Hardware and Software Requirements for PowerSchool and the Installation Guide for PowerSchool 7.11.x, available on PowerSource, before installing this version of PowerSchool. The Hardware and Software Requirements for PowerSchool are updated periodically, and contain information on supported software and browser versions for a release. Review this document before installing updates to PowerSchool. General Recommendation Pearson strongly recommends that you check to make sure Secure Socket Layer (SSL) is enabled on your PowerSchool server to ensure all data passed between your server and end users/pearson Technical Support remains secure and private. If SSL is not enabled, data moving between your server and end users is unencrypted. PowerSchool Components PowerSchool is comprised of several software components, each versioned independently from one another. This allows for greater flexibility of component updates as new features and bug fixes become available. Some updates may include dependencies between components. These dependencies will be communicated and built in to the component update installers to prevent PowerSchool from being configured incorrectly. 9 What s New in PowerSchool 7.11 PowerSchool 7.11 includes new features that have been highly requested by customers, including the initial release of field level security, and PowerTeacher 2.8, which includes a new way to launch the Gradebook that protects against Java updates and does not require browser plugins. Additional features in this release include updates to database extensions, schedule balancing, and language toolkit enhancements, all meant to increase productivity, save time, and facilitate your customization of PowerSchool. In addition, significant improvements and investments have been made in our development processes aimed at improving the overall quality of our releases and our ability to address long-standing product defects. To that end, in this release we have resolved over 60 product issues that have been affecting customers since These investments and changes are sustaining and will result in a similar, if not greater number, of issues being resolved in future releases. Key Features and Enhancements PowerTeacher 2.8 includes a new way to launch the Gradebook that protects against Java updates and does not require browser plugins. It also includes a desktop shortcut that allows direct sign-in to the Gradebook. After a simple setup of the new launch method, teachers will find the same Gradebook features, so there is no retraining needed for teachers. Installers are available from the System Settings page if administrators want to help teachers with the setup. PowerSchool now supports field level security for seven critical fields in the Students table, custom pages, while exporting, and on reports (excluding ReportWorks and most State and Provincial reports). User-created custom field data migration and customization enhancements now allow users to take full advantage of the database extension technology. Students of designated special programs can now be balanced between sections for course requests, and related reports are now available. Localization enhancements. 10 PowerTeacher Gradebook For more information, see the PowerTeacher Portal User Guide for PowerSchool 7.x or the System Administrator User Guide for PowerSchool 7.x, or the online help. The enhanced functionality provided in this release includes: Feature New PowerTeacher Gradebook Launcher PowerTeacher Gradebook Desktop Shortcut Teachers can now launch the Gradebook using a method that protects against Java updates and does not require browser plugins. After running a quick setup process, teachers can take advantage of the new launch method and enjoy the same Gradebook features they use today. The new Gradebook launch method provides a desktop shortcut that allows direct sign-in to the Gradebook. Administrator Installers Installers are available for administrators to help teachers with the setup at Start page > System Setup > System Settings > PowerTeacher Gradebook Launch Installers. Field Level Security (Initial Release) For more information, see the Security User Guide for PowerSchool 7.x, or the online help. The enhanced functionality provided in this release includes: Feature Field Level Security With Field Level Security, PowerSchool System Administrators can now fine tune security all the way down to the field level. You can allow users to make edits to some fields on a page, while other fields are set to view-only or even fully restricted with no access at all. Feature detail: Easily associate roles with fields. The enhanced functionality provided in this release includes: Feature Server-Side Load Engine (Beta) Student Program Balancing (Beta) This optional feature eliminates the need to run the scheduling engine on client machines for the load process. It also provides additional functionality, such as program balancing, as well as optimized processing for better results. Students of designated special programs can be balanced between sections for course requests during the PowerScheduler Load process and Automated Walk-In Scheduler. What s New in PowerSchool

12 Feature Student Program Balancing Reports PowerScheduler Search by Next Year Grade Level Addition of District Contact Information to District Information Page Summer School Indicator Group Function PowerScheduler and Live-side reports have now been created to display the number of students as well as the percentage of students for each special program in the school overall, and in each specific section. In PowerScheduler, you can now search more easily for students by the next year grade level. When entering district information in PowerSchool you can now enter district technical support information, including , phone, and support URL. Summer School Indicator group function is now available to enable you to set the Summer School ID and the Summer School Admin Note on the Scheduling setup for a group of students. For more details, refer to the Online Help. Database Extension Enhancements For more information, see the System Administrator User Guide for PowerSchool 7.x, or the online help. The enhanced functionality provided in this release includes: Feature Additional Standard Insertion Points Mass Migration of User-Created Custom Fields Removal of the Renaming On Newly- Installed Plugins You are now able to use additional standard insertion points so that you can insert page fragments without defining custom insertion points, saving time and effort when customizing PowerSchool pages. You can now mass migrate all user-created legacy custom fields. This feature allow you to move all of your legacy custom fields to become better performing database extension fields, without having to individually migrate each custom field, saving time and effort. PowerSchool now provides an error message rather than renaming a plugin when trying to install a plugin with duplicate asset names. This enhancement helps you avoid conflicts between database extension and custom pages contained in plugins. What s New in PowerSchool

13 Language Toolkit For more information, see the Localization Administration User Guide for PowerSchool 7.x, or the online help. The enhanced functionality provided in this release includes: Feature Generate Object Reports In Languages Other Than English New Translation Sharing Import Translate/Customize Object Report Data Access Tag Text Object report developers can now create object reports in languages other than English, with Data Access Tags (DATs) that can be translated or formatted for a specific language/locale. When PowerSchool users print object reports, they can specify the language for the report, and the report will be output using the date, time and numeric format for that language/locale. You can now easily share the different language translations of the PowerSchool user interface across multiple PowerSchool instances by importing a Language Package in the System > Page and Data Management > Localization area. In order to generate object reports in languages other than English, the hard-coded text within object reports, such as DATs, must be translated. The PowerSchool Localization Administration feature now offers a Data Access Tag category where linguists can translate the default English used in DATs (He/She, His/Her, Son, Daughter, etc.) to support non-english or customized object reports. PowerSchool Mobile Services Enhancement For more information, see the System Administrator User Guide for PowerSchool 7.x, or the online help. The enhanced functionality provided in this release includes: Feature Automatic Determination of District Mobile App Server Address When registering mobile app services in PowerSchool the district mobile app server address is now automatically determined and validated. Users on multi-node systems may modify these settings if needed. What s New in PowerSchool

14 Resolved Issues General Fixes Issue Access to ReportWorks Reports Denied if Roles Assigned to Default Group Access Arizona ADEConnect Plugin Causing PowerSchool Performance Issues Attendance Records Lock and Stall in Dalx_Semaphore Table Changing PowerTeacher Administrator Security Setting Produces Error Class Attendance Audit Appears on Print Report Menu Copy Security Permissions Failed Error Message Data Validation Rules Not Working With All Student Fields When Enrolling New Students Demographics Calculation Incorrect Duplicate ID Created in FIELDSTABLE Duplicate student_number in Import File Causes Issue With Student Extension Data Enrollment Summary by Date Report If the User Access role is not set to the Group Default (Administrator) role and has been overridden by one of the roles from the Roles Administration list, you cannot access the ReportWorks tab or run any ReportWorks based report. This issue is now resolved. PowerSchool performance is affected when using the ADEConnect plugin. This issue is now resolved. Attendance records continuously lock and records stall in the Dalx_Semaphore table. The status displays Processing Changes but never finishes, causing a PowerSchool restart. This issue is now resolved. On the Staff Security Settings page, changing the PowerTeacher Administrator setting from Yes to No produces an error stating "You must delete all class content in PT Administrator for user before setting 'PowerTeacher Administrator user' to No". This issue is now resolved. Class Attendance Audit incorrectly appears on the Print Report menu. This issue is now resolved. When Copying security permissions you can receive a copy failed error message due to a null pointer exception. This issue is now resolved. Data Validation Rules set for the Enroll New Student page are ignored, and required fields are not enabled. This issue is now resolved. Demographics: ^(aggmemdayssytd) calculates an extra day. This calculation is now correct. A duplicate ID is created in the FIELDSTABLE due to an incorrect sequence in the code. This issue is now resolved. When a duplicated student_number exists in a file for quick import, data in a new database extension table is no longer necessarily associated with the correct student. This issue is now resolved. When running the Enrollment Summary by Date report for a date in the past, it will not select Resolved Issues 14

When attempting to edit a previously created incident that was saved with one or more participant roles with no sub codes, and later sub codes are added to that participant role, a nullpointerexception error occurs. This issue is now resolved. When the ical application attempts to connect to the server, errors appear in the PSLog. This issue is now resolved. The End-of-Year process is not updating the Exit Code or Comment for students if they are in a grade level that exists at both the school they are enrolled in currently and at the school to which they are transferring. This issue is now resolved. During the nightly process, when re-aligning the section schedule an IndexOutOfBoundsException occurs. This issue is now resolved. An informational error message is recorded in the PSJ Log anytime you access the Grades and Attendance page in the PowerSchool Parent portal. This issue is now resolved. Security Groups can only access the Re-enroll Student page if the Can Modify Schedule setting allows full access. This issue is now resolved. Members of a Group with default access of View Only intermittently receive an error message stating Insufficient access privileges to make modifications to this data, when the Group has View & Modify access to the initial page. This issue is now resolved. The Interval Attendance page experiences slow performance. This issue is now resolved. The use of quotation marks on the Office Visit page in the Visit Reasons, Assessment and Action fields causes the quotes and everything after the quotes to be removed after submitting the page. This issue is now resolved. When the IP address contains a high number, such as x.x, the log out information is not recorded in the LOGINS table. This issue is now resolved. Resolved Issues 15

Stored Grade Comments Format on Transcript List Student Search from the District Office Issue When signed in to the administrator portion of PowerSchool, or PowerTeacher portal, with a locale using a non-standard date format, you cannot record attendance using the Multi-Day Attendance feature. This issue is now resolved. Multi-line error messages in PowerSchool display the <br/> HTML tag. This issue is now resolved. The on-screen instructions on the End-of-Year Process page (District > System > End-of-Year Process) are invalid. This issue is now resolved. When the Close Section at max setting is enabled on the Edit Section page, and the Password required to override a section s maximum enrollment setting is enabled on the District > Miscellaneous page, the dialog prompt to enter a password to override the maximum enrollment does not appear. This issue is now resolved. When a teacher does not have an affiliation at the school serving lunch, PowerLunch does not correctly display or use the available balance. This issue is now resolved. When a user role is disabled on the Roles Administration page, you can still access system resources as if the role is enabled. This issue is now resolved. When synching school names from PowerSchool to PSM_School, the schools names could be truncated, as the PSM_School.Name is only 50 characters, while the Schools.Name is 60 characters. This issue is now resolved. Both fields are now 60 characters in length. Sections do not display in Teacher Schedules on the live side after committing the Master Schedule in PowerScheduler. This issue is now resolved. On the Transcript List, stored grade comments will print a <BR> when the content includes carriage returns. This issue is now resolved. Entering a valid student_number into the Student Search from the District office does not yield results. This issue is now resolved. Resolved Issues 16

17 Issue Student Search Issues Student search *not_enrolled_in_period returns unexpected results. This issue is now resolved. Student search *hours_requested returns unexpected results when using the following comparators: < is less than, >is greater than, <= is less than or equal to, >= is greater than or equal to. This issue is now resolved. Student search *special_programs= returns unexpected results, this issue is now resolved. Test DAT Date Results Blank if DAT Has Format Value Transcript Object in an Object Report Does Not Import Column Alignment Correctly Zero Balance (0.00) in Balance1 Does Not Rollover to Balance2 During End-of- Year Process for Staff/Teachers Data Access Tag (DAT) Date results will be blank if the DAT has a format value added to it. This issue is now resolved. A Transcript object report that contains multiple columns of data and different column alignments, if you export that report as a template and then import the report back into PowerSchool, all column alignments default to left. This issue is now resolved. If a staff member or teacher has a zero value (0.00) in the balance1 field, the value does not rollover to balance2 during the End-of-Year process. This issue is now resolved. PowerSchool Installer Issue Error Appears for International Customers When Launching PowerSchool A schema failure error appears when starting up PowerSchool in all countries other than the United States and Canada. This issue is now resolved. PowerSchool Mobile for Parent/Student Issue No Content Appears After Sign In PowerSchool Mobile does not display content after sign in. Mobile apps are not receiving data when PowerSchool has corrupted or non-printable white space characters. This issue is now resolved. Resolved Issues 17

18 PowerTeacher Issue Assignments With Exempt Score Codes Display Issue Assignments Display Twice on Individual Student Report Null Pointer Error on Individual Student Report PowerTeacher Gradebook assignments with custom score codes that are exempt no longer display on the quick lookup screen. This issue is now resolved. Assignments display twice on the individual student report for re-enrolled students with Exempt scores. This issue is now resolved. If a grade scale contains one grade and the Teachers Grade Scale (District > Grade Scales) setting is not enabled is not enabled, a null pointer exception error message appears when running the Individual Student Report, Category Total Report or Student Multi-Section Report. This issue is now resolved. ReportWorks Issue ReportWorks Reports Not Running In Order Submitted Unable to Run ReportWorks Reports When submitting ReportWorks reports in PowerSchool, reports that are submitted later are processed first by the server. This issue is now resolved. ReportWorks reports do not generate due to an issue locating ClassMapping for TableName=PSRW_HEALTHMEDICAL. This issue is now resolved. State Reporting Arizona State Reporting Updates PowerSchool 7.11 includes Arizona state-specific updates. For more information, see Arizona state-specific release notes available on PowerSource. State Reporting Platform A new feature allows SRP reports to query the Legacy Reporting Engine report description dynamically using SQL. Resolved Issues 18

19 Known Issues The following known issues were introduced with this release. An issue was identified where the cache in a server array may not be updated if the time of all servers is out of sync by more than two minutes. Using time synchronization will prevent this issue from occurring. See Knowledgebase article for more information on this issue and to learn how to setup time synchronization for your server array. When enabling Field Level Security on Date of Birth and SSN with no access, you will not be able to enroll new students in NC HET environment. Workaround: Create a role that is specific for HET ETS Lookup that does not have field level restrictions applied. Page Changes The following is a list of page changes.
