10 Refresh and reset Many people make it a habit to create a personalized system image and reinstall Windows every 6 to 12 months to improve their hardware's performance. Microsoft aims to make that chore a little easier with the new refresh and reset features.

16 Faster startup times Windows 8 includes a new hybrid system that Microsoft says will dramatically improve boot times compared to Windows 7. The new hybrid boot combines processes used in cold boots and hibernation mode, including kernel-session storage and the employment of multiple cores in parallel during boot.

17 Windows 8 ARM support Windows has only supported x86-based Intel and AMD PCs but that is all changing with Windows 8, which will support devices running on ARM architecture. British company ARM's chip designs are being used in a growing number of devices, and Microsoft is keen to make Windows as widely available as possible - especially on cheaper Windows 8 tablets to compete with the ipad and Android tablets.

24 Secure boot A new secure-boot process, enabled by default on all new Windows 8 PCs, will prevent unauthorized operating systems and malware from loading on your machine. The system uses cryptographic signatures to verify that the operating system is authorized to load and that it hasn't been tampered with.

26 Remote Desktop Remote Desktop is an enterprise app that's handy for controlling PCs remotely from a centralized location. A PC running Windows 8 Pro can act has a Remote Desktop host, but one running Windows 8 or Windows RT cannot. Large organizations can use Remote Desktop for training, software installations, sharing applications, and other collaborative tasks.
