1 Introduction The Monitor Solution 7 Advanced Setup Guide is provided to assist with a best-practices approach to the initial setup and configuration of Monitor Solution. It is implied that the Symantec Management Platform and Monitor Solution are already installed. Target Audience Administrators who wish to customize and or optimize the initial implementation of Monitor Solution in their environment. Walkthrough 1.0 Configure Monitor Agent Rollout 1. Access: Home > Monitoring and Alerting > Monitor > Agents/Plug-ins 2. Review each operating system s agent install policy settings and adjust the Schedule options accordingly 3. Ensure that the install policy applies to only the servers you want the Monitor Agent installed on. If you plan to modify the settings of the default install policy, it may be advisable to leave the default policy intact and work with a cloned version 4. Disable the default install policies, right-click and choose Clone, and name the cloned policy accordingly Page 1 of 8

2 5. Adjust the Schedule options as needed, remove the default Applied to target, and apply the policy to the desired target(s): 2.0 Configure Server Settings 1. Access: Home > Monitoring and Alerting > Monitor > Settings > Monitor Server Settings 2. Review the default Purge Maintenance settings In most cases, the default settings should suffice. You may wish to increase these values if you require older records for reporting purposes. You may also decrease these values to prevent unnecessary database growth if you do not require an extended range of historical data. Note: Raising these values may cause a significant increase in database size. These values should be adjusted with caution. 3. Take note of the Purge Schedule time. Ensure this is scheduled during off-hours and does not conflict with other resource intensive SQL processes. Page 2 of 8

3 4. Review the Heartbeat configuration In most cases, the default settings should suffice. Disabling Check for heartbeat every: will prevent Heartbeat notifications in the Event Console, but will not disable the Heartbeat communication from the Monitor Agent to the server. 3.0 Configure Monitor Agent Settings 1. Access: Home > Monitoring and Alerting > Monitor > Agents/Plug-ins > [OS] > Configuration 2. Define the SNMP Community string if you are using a custom string in your environment. This value primarily pertains to the SNMP metrics for the Dell Monitor Packs. 3. Configure the SQL Metric Default Connection settings if the default values to not apply to your environment. These values pertain to the default SQL database settings and credentials used for SQL metrics. In most cases, you ll want to use localhost and master, but perhaps you ll need to change the credentials. Page 3 of 8 Note: The default Performance Tuning settings should suffice for most environments. These settings only need to be adjusted in special scenarios. 4. Review the Data Collection settings and adjust as necessary. Record metric values every: applies to the level of granularity for detailed metric data. All metrics will have a value stored in the database for every 5 minutes based on the default value of 300 seconds.

4 Record process values every: applies to a snapshot of all running processes. It is disabled by default due to this information being SQL data intensive and is only referenced when running Historical Performance Viewer. It may be advised to always have this value higher than the Record metric values every: value. The Record NT event data settings apply to if, and how often, Windows NT events are stored in the database. If you are monitoring numerous NT Events, it may be advisable to enable Only when an alert is raised or to disable this setting entirely. This data is only referenced when running Historical Performance Viewer during the time period when the NT Event occurred. Note: These values strictly pertain to historical data and have no effect on real-time monitoring and alerting. 5. Adjust the Maintenance Windows settings as necessary to your environment. These settings apply to how the Monitor Agent should function during the time frame(s) defined in the Maintenance Windows configuration policy. Continue evaluating monitor policy rules is disabled by default, which essentially pauses the Monitor Agent during Maintenance Window(s). 4.0 Import Monitor Packs 1. Access: Home > Monitoring and Alerting > Monitor > Policies > Import Monitor Pack Page 4 of 8

5 2. Select a Monitor Pack, then choose Schedule. You may then choose to import the Monitor Pack immediately by selecting Run now, or Run on a schedule to import the pack at a later time Note: While the import process is not highly resource intensive, you may want to avoid a possible impact on the system by ensuring it is not run during peak hours. 3. Confirm the import completed successfully by selecting the refresh button in the toolbar, or refreshing the entire web page. The Monitor Pack should then have a status of Completed. 5.0 Configure Task 1. Access: Home > Monitoring and Alerting > Monitor > Policies > Jobs and Tasks > Tasks 2. Review the default Send task. If the To: field is left blank, it will use the Default Addresses as defined in the Notification Server Settings. Once information is entered in the To: field, it will no longer use the default addresses. If you plan on making significant changes to this default task, it may be advisable to leave the default task in-tact and work with a cloned version. 3. Right-click the default Send task, choose Clone, and name the cloned task accordingly. You may then adjust fields as desired. Page 5 of 8

6 4. Monitor Solution tasks support tokens which are similar to variables. You may include the desired tokens which are available using the following format: %!token name!% Note: For a list of all available tokens, please refer to the Monitor client and server token types section of the Monitor Solution User s Guide. 6.0 Enable and modify Monitor Policies 1. Access: Home > Monitoring and Alerting > Monitor > Policies > Monitor Policies 2. Review the available Monitor Policies now available within the Monitor Packs which you imported earlier. Identify the policies you wish to use in your environment. 3. If the rules within a policy suite your needs, you may enable it by choosing the On switch. If you wish to add/remove rules from a policy or customize the targets, you may want to run the Create a monitor policy wizard by accessing Actions > Monitor > New Policy. You may also choose to keep the default policy in-tact and modify a cloned version. 4. Right-click the desired policy, choose Clone, and name the cloned policy accordingly Page 6 of 8

7 5. You may choose to add, remove, or modify the rules within the policy. You may also choose to change the Applies to target definition to point to a custom target or filter. 6. Once you ve completed the modification of the policy, you may enable it by choosing the On switch 7.0 Configure Actions 1. Access: Home > Monitoring and Alerting > Monitor > Policies > Monitor Policies 2. Select a policy you would like to configure an action for. You then have a choice of either configuring the action on a per-rule basis, or on a per-policy/severity basis. 3. To configure an action for an individual rule, select the rule then choose the Edit button. 4. In the Edit Rule window, you will have the choice of creating a Task server action or a Monitor agent action. For this example we will be adding the task created earlier which a task server is responsible for handling. In the Actions > Tasks > Task server section, choose the Add button. Note: An example of a monitor agent task would be a Service Control task. Page 7 of 8

8 5. In the Select Task window, select the custom task and choose OK. You will then be prompted with a Task Configuration window which displays all the tokens currently being referenced by the task. Note: If you choose Show tokens, a new window will simply display all available tokens for that task Conclusion Once you have Monitor Solution configured and implemented in your environment, you may use the following tools: Real Time Performance Viewer. View metric, process, and event data in real time Historical Performance Viewer. View historical metric, process, and event data Event Console View Monitor Solution events and alerts as they occur Reports.
