2 HOUSTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE SOUTHWEST COURSE SYLLABUS Network + Certification ITNW 1091 Topics address recently identified current events, skills, knowledges, and/or attitudes and behaviors pertinent to the technology or occupation and relevant to the professional development of the student. Network+ is a comprehensive approach to Networking, preparing the student for CompTIA's Network+ exam and developing proficiency in network fundamentals, protocols, design, installation and maintenance. COURSE OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this training is to help you develop fundamental networking skills that will prepare you to work on Networks. It also prepares the student for the nationally recognized CompTIA Network+ exam. GOALS: To provide students with vendor-independent Networking skills and concepts including: Students will learn networking fundamentals and protocols. Students will learn cabling and devices necessary for networking. Students will design and implement generic networking systems. Students will install, configure and maintain a TCP/IP client. LEARNING OUTCOMES: Students will demonstrate mastery of these objectives by successfully completing all hands-on labs that are specific to each unit goal. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to: Define networking and identify network architectures, network topology characteristics, and the major network operating systems. Explain the Open Systems Interconnection reference model (OSI/RM) and its relationship to the packet creation process, key internetworking protocols, and directory services. Identify the network devices associated with LANs and WANs and the common cable types used in networking, including coaxial, fiber optic, and twisted pair. Demonstrate knowledge of NIC configuration and identify WAN protocols. Explain the TCP/IP architecture, including the TCP/IP Suite protocols and their respective RFC's. Identify IP address classes and reserved IP addresses. Determine default and customs subnet mask and CIDR notation through superintending. Describe the routing process. Identify and describe network services. Define the function and roles of DNS. Identify remote protocols such as PPP, SLIP AND PPTP. 2

3 Explain the need for network security and identify resources that need security Determine how and when to apply patches and fixes to your system. Plan the key areas of support for your network. Analyze the scope of network problems. PREREQUISITE: Students should have: Familiarity with computers, preferable be A+ certified or equivalent knowledge Keyboarding at WPM A willingness to learn. REQUIRED TEXTBOOK: Network + Academic Student Guide Volumes I and II version 4.07 by ComputerPrep following the CompTIA Network objectives, provided. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND EXPECTATIONS This is a 36-hour instructor guided course. Student will complete hands-on, in-class assignments. There will be lab time to complete assignments. REQUIREMENTS FOR COURSE COMPLETION CERTIFICATE: To receive a Certificate of Completion and Continuing Education Units, students must meet the following requirements: Attend at least 80% of scheduled class time Take and score at least a 70% on all Internet based quizzes and exams. Complete the practice Network+ exam, demonstrating 70% mastery of course concepts or equivalent skills demonstration to instructor. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND EXPECTATIONS: This class is an accelerated program that includes 96 hours of in-class instruction, comprised of both lectures and hands-on lab work. Students will need to complete assignments, such as reading, outside of class. OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENT-FACULTY INTERACTION: Students are encouraged to ask questions and request clarification or guidance as needed during class. A question and answer period is always provided. OPPORTUNITIES FOR CAREER EXPLORATION: Topics relevant to future employment and career exploration opportunities will be presented to the students, including certification and degree prospects. 3

4 OPPORTUNITIES FOR SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTION: Students are informed of instructional aids and resources, including books, other publications, and web sites relevant to the course. SPEAKER FORUM: At the discretion of the instructor, speakers may be invited to address the class on pertinent topics. CELL PHONES AND PAGERS: Cell phones and pagers can be disruptive during class. Please turn these devices off or set to mute while in the classroom or student lab. ATTENDANCE: To fully benefit from the class, students are expected to attend all classes.
