2 HOUSTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE SOUTHWEST COURSE SYLLABUS Network Cabling, Introduction CSIR 1055 Preparation of the certifications required by industry. This course is designed to familiarize the student with modern wiring technology concepts, components and applications. The advantages, characteristics, operation and configurations of fiber optics and network wiring systems are studied. Topics include light sources, light transmission, fiber optics principles and terminology, shielded cables and networking system components. The proper use of testing equipment and accepted termination, installation, diagnostic, troubleshooting procedures and safety regulations are emphasized. COURSE OBJECTIVE This training teaches students to do cabling and prepares them for the Networking Certification Exam and the Fiber Optic Certification Exam. GOALS In this course students will: Identify and describe the characteristics, applications and configuration of cables and terminations used in network wiring systems. Select proper tools to terminate and test twisted pair, coaxial and other cable components. Identify Electrical Code articles pertaining to network wiring applications. Define fiber optic terminology and explain concepts relating to fiber optics. Describe and identify tools and equipment required to terminate and test fiber optic cables. Identify and describe function of components utilized in fiber optic systems. LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: Exhibit knowledge of safety rules and regulations, and demonstrate awareness of hazards in the workplace. Describe how to avoid job-site accidents. Explain the importance of following safety rules, company safety policies, and reporting accidents and injuries. Exhibit knowledge of safety rules and demonstrate awareness of electrical hazards. Use proper safety practices when working near pressurized or high temperature systems, near trenches and excavations, and in confined spaces. Practice safe work procedures around electrical hazards. Explain and identify uses of personal protective equipment. Demonstrate safe working procedures in the selection, inspection, use and maintenance of hand and power tools. -2- Revised 3/1/05
3 Identify various types of symbols and information utilized in blueprints. Describe basic components of communications systems. Identify and describe the characteristics, applications and configuration of cables and terminations used in network wiring systems. Select proper tools to terminate and test twisted pair, coaxial and other cable components. Identify Electrical Code articles pertaining to network wiring applications. Define fiber optic terminology. Explain concepts relating to fiber optics. Describe and identify tools and equipment required to terminate and test fiber optic cables. Identify and describe function of components utilized in fiber optic systems. Determine and select the right tools to cut, strip, splice and terminate wires. Identify the proper operation of hand and power tools. Choose proper measuring instruments for given situations. Identify the proper operating procedures of hand and power tools. Describe the methods to operate conduit benders. Explain the techniques to operate measuring instruments. PREREQUISITE none REQUIRED TEXTBOOK 3-ring binder College ruled writing paper (100 sheets) # 2 pencils (3) Black ink pen (1) Red ink pen (1) Eraser (1) Ruler (1) Text highlighter COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND EXPECTATIONS This is a 48-hour instructor guided course. Student will complete hands-on, in-class assignments. There will be lab time to complete all assignments. ATTENDANCE To fully benefit from the class, students are expected to attend all classes. REQUIREMENTS FOR COURSE COMPLETION CERTIFICATE To receive a Certificate of Completion and be awarded Continuing Education Units, students must meet the following requirements: Attend at least 90% of scheduled class time -3- Revised 3/1/05
4 Complete the course lab demonstrating 90% mastery of course concepts or equivalent skills demonstration to instructor. OPPORTUNITIES FOR CAREER EXPLORATION Topics relevant to future employment and career exploration opportunities will be presented to the students, including certification and degree prospects. OPPORTUNITIES FOR SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTION Students are informed of instructional aids and resources, including books, other publications, and web sites relevant to the course.
