1 Course Name: RSPT 2231 Simulations in Respiratory Care Credit: 2 (1 lecture, 3 lab) HOUSTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE SYSTEM Coleman College for Health Sciences RSPT 2231 Simulations in Respiratory Care CRN Summer 2013 Instructor: Ebong Ekwere Coleman College Room 368 8:00 am 12:10 pm Tue/Thu Course Description: The theory and history of Clinical Simulation Examinations. Topics include the construction types, scoring and mechanics of taking the exam along with practice in taking both written and computerized simulation exams, and basic concepts of computer usage. Prerequisites: RSPT 1361, RSPT 1362, RSPT 2260, RSPT 2258, RSPT 1310, RSPT 1240, RSPT 1311, RSPT 1325, RSPT 2317, RSPT 2314, RSPT 2266, RSPT 2255, RSPT 2310, RSPT 2233, RSPT 2325, RSPT 2353 CAPSTONE (the student must be in the semester of graduation to be eligible to take this course) Corequisites: RSPT 2261, RSPT 2239 Course Goals: The course goals are to prepare the student to successfully sit for the National Board for the Respiratory Care Written Registry and Clinical Simulation examinations. The course will also incorporate a portion of the SCANS competencies as they apply to the use of technology, the application of critical thinking skills and the comprehension and application of systems knowledge. SCANS Competencies: Resources C1 Allocates time Description: Selects relevant, goal-related activities, ranks them in order of importance, allocates time to activities, and understands, prepares, and follows schedules. Competent performance in allocating time includes properly identifying tasks to be completed; ranking tasks in order of importance; developing and following an effective, workable schedule based on accurate estimates of such things as importance of tasks, time to complete tasks, time available for completion and task deadlines; avoiding wasting time; and accurately evaluating and adjusting a schedule. Objective: Complete assigned self paced computer practices. Description of Module: Students will demonstrate the use of time and technology by successfully completing the assigned computer-based clinical simulations and exams. Resources C2 Allocates Money
2 Description: Uses or prepares budgets, including making cost and revenue forecasts, keeps detailed records to track budget performance, and makes appropriate adjustments. Competent performance in allocating money includes accurately preparing and using a budget according to a consistent and orderly accounting method; accurately calculating future budgetary needs based on projected costs and revenues; accurately tracking the extent to which actual costs and revenues differ from the estimated budget, and taking appropriate and effective actions. Objective: Raise funds to help finance class activities. Description of Module: Students will demonstrate the use of resources by successfully planning fund raising events to help finance extracurricular activities. Sills, Mosby) Kettering Review Materials, e.t.c. Lab Requirements: Students are to utilize the computer lab and the RSPT Lab to complete the following: 1.) The C&S Solutions clinical sims (8) 2.) The C&S Solutions Advanced Level Exam 3.) 3 Academic Honesty: Students are responsible for conducting themselves with honor and integrity in fulfilling course requirements. Scholastic/Academic dishonesty includes but is not limited to, cheating on tests, plagiarism and collusion. Possible punishment may include a grade of zero or F on the particular assignment, failure of the entire course, dismissal from the program and/or dismissal from the College System. Attendance and Withdrawal Policy: Attendance is 10% of the class grade. Students are expected to work on and complete course objectives throughout the semester. This can be done at the students own pace either in the main computer lab or the RSPT computer room. Course Requirements and Grading Policy: 1.) The student must complete & turn in a final score sheet for the C& S solutions clinical simulations (8: 4 Adults, 2 Pedi, 2 Neo) and the Advanced Level Examination by June 25, Each simulation and the exam can be repeated multiple times but only one final score sheet will be accepted.* 2.) The student must successfully complete the free web-based NBRC CRT and RRT practice examinations and the CSE as scheduled in the course calendar below. This will be taken on-line (with the supervision of a proctor) in the computer lab. The student can retake each exams twice more on their own but only the highest of the three grades will be recorded in the final grade matrix. 3.) The student will take the NBRC Web-Based RRT Self Assessment Examination as scheduled in the course calendar below. The student must purchase the examination from NBRC and submit the proof of such to the instructor by no later than June 20, The exam will be taken on-line (with the supervision of a facilitator) in the computer lab. 4.) The student must submit a resume/curriculum vitae by June20, 2013 at 8:00am *The student is encouraged to repeat the clinical simulations and advanced level exam until he/she attains an acceptable score. A. The student s grade will be determined by attendance, quizzes, module exams, the completion of C&S Clinical Simulations and Advanced level exam and Mastery of the NBRC WRSAE. B. Grading Formula: Attendance 10% Quizzes 10% C & S 8 Clinical Simulations 5% (4 Adult, 2 Pedi, 2 Neo) C & S Advanced Level Exam 5% Module Exams 20% Final Exam 10% NBRC Practice Exams (CRT, RRT, CSE) 30% NBRC RRT SAE Exam 10% 100% NOTE: Final date to turn in all Simulations and the A-Level Exam is June 25, 2013 at 8:00am. NO EXCEPTIONS!!!
4 C. Grading System: A = B = C = F = less than 74.5% Testing: See schedule Make Up Policy: None Projects, Assignments, Portfolios, Service Learning, Internships, etc: Students must turn in: 1. Hard copies of 8 C&S clinical simulation exam scores 2. Hard copy of C&S Advanced Level Exam score. Additionally students are required to complete the NBRC WRSAE as scheduled by the instructor.
