5 Engaging the Private Sector NYCEM recognizes that the private sector plays an invaluable role in preparing for, responding to and recovering from emergencies in NYC. Through its Public/Private Initiatives unit, NYCEM works closely with businesses and organizations (large and small) to develop partnerships and programs that enhance the resilience of NYC. Cultural Real Estate Food Services Engaging the Private Sector Preparing for emergencies is important, whether you run a public, private, community or nonprofit organization. It doesn't take a lot of time or money to make a plan and be prepared.
6 Engaging the Private Sector Partners in Preparedness Established in 2011, Partners in Preparedness is a nationally recognized program that supports organizations in preparing their employees, services, and facilities for emergencies. Partners come from all industries including arts and entertainment; education; business, banking and finance; faith-based; health care; hospitality and service; community, nonprofits and government and enjoy a range of benefits. This includes access to many resources and support they need to be prepared and resilient: Free preparedness brochures Real-time emergency information Access to webinars, forums and other events Recognition of their commitment to preparedness Engaging the Private Sector Corporate Emergency Access System The Corporate Emergency Access System (CEAS) authorizes essential employees to access restricted areas following an emergency. CEAS-credentialed employees can work to shut down or sustain core business functions until normal entry is restored. CEAS is the only program recognized by the NYPD and NYC Emergency Management that allows emergency access to businesses. The next time there is a major business disruption to your work location, CEAS may help you limit financial loss, retain customers, and get you back in business faster. CEAS may enable you to: Gain emergency access to your business when access is restricted. Rescue vaulted assets, such as cash, checks, receipts, and certificates. Retrieve vital records, such as contracts, invoices, customer records, insurance documents, tax records, and licenses. Shut down technology systems. Retrieve critical equipment, such as laptops and servers.
7 Engaging the Private Sector CorpNet CorpNet provides business partners with current, accurate information about emergencies to enhance awareness and aid decision making, should their businesses be affected. NYC Emergency Management monitors public safety radio and information networks, news media, and commercial and proprietary weather systems 24 hours a day through its Watch Command. Watch Command uses the NYC Emergency Management paging system to forward relevant messages to CorpNet subscribers. When an incident reaches a specific threshold, an emergency responder is dispatched to verify the event and facilitate interagency coordination onsite. This process enhances CorpNet's accuracy, as information comes directly from the scene via the NYC Emergency Management responder. If you do business in New York City, you may be eligible to receive CorpNet notifications. If you have a legitimate business address (no webmail or personal ISP accounts, i.e., AOL, Hotmail, Verizon) you can enroll in the CorpNet program. Engaging the Private Sector The Private Sector/COOP ESF One of several Emergency Support Functions (ESF) that is activated at the EOC during major incidents Provides incident status as well as information regarding current actions taken by the City in response to the incident to Private Sector Partners/COOP via scheduled daily conference calls (situational awareness) Provide subject matter experts to provide information and answer questions Provide time sensitive information to Private Sector/COOP partners via Request Private Sector Partners to staff the EOC as needed
8 Engaging the Private Sector The Dress Rehearsal Hurricane/Tropical Storm Irene Made landfall in New York area on August 28th, 2011 NYC EOC activated First time Private Sector Partners were requested to staff the EOC Multiple communications such as the hourly Transcom Report sent every day Engaging the Private Sector The Main Event Superstorm Sandy Made landfall in New York area on October 29th, 2012 NYC EOC activated Second time Private Sector Partners were requested to staff the EOC Allowed the Private Sector direct access to various ESFs, agencies, and organizations for real-time information and citywide agencies response Allowed for reciprocal services that the private sector could assist the city with Multiple communications such as the hourly Transcom Report sent every day

Continuity of operations is an effort within individual organizations to ensure that essential functions continue to be performed during a wide range of emergencies.
