2 Preparedness Tools and Resources Available to the Private Sector Government and non-profit sector provide tools, resources, best practices, guidelines and standards including, but not limited to : FEMA s Ready. Gov, -- offers guidance and best practices for preparedness Red Cross Ready Rating, self-paced program with self assessment process Institute for Business and Home Safety, Open for Business -- insurance industry initiative that provides best practices for small and mid-size businesses PS-Prep -- standards based management system, features certification by accredited third parties Use of these tools is facilitated through communication and awareness campaigns and community outreach programs. 2

3 FEMA s Ready Business Campaign Subset of the FEMA s overarching Ready Campaign. Ready Business is a nationwide effort to raise the business community s awareness about how to prepare their organizations and employees in an emergency. FEMA collaborated with the Ad Council and the American Red Cross to develop numerous Public Service Announcements (PSAs), planning templates, and easy to follow step-by-step directions to help businesses, employers and employees become better prepared. Ready Business contains tips, recommendations and planning guides. Stay Informed, Make a Plan, Build a Kit. Develop continuity and emergency operations plans. Lists to consider for making emergency and medical kits Information about sheltering in place. Safety information for various hazards. 3

7 Voluntary Private Sector Preparedness Program (PS-Prep ) Vision: A culture of preparedness in the private sector that enhances national resilience to all-hazards. Mission: To enhance nationwide resilience for all-hazards by assisting private sector entities to improve preparedness through conformance to one of the DHS-adopted preparedness standards. The PS-Prep Program is: A voluntary accreditation and certification program designed to raise the level of preparedness throughout the private sector A DHS program, coordinated through FEMA Currently being implemented 7

8 DHS Adopted Standards for Private Sector Preparedness DHS has adopted three standards as the basis for PS-Prep. These standards were developed by preparedness experts, approved by ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board (ANAB). They are: Disaster and Emergency Management and Business Continuity {NFPA 1600: 2007/2010 editions} Organizational Resilience and Security Preparedness and Continuity Management {ASIS SPC } Business Continuity Management {BSI BS 25999}. 8

11 Encouraging Private Sector Preparedness Business justifications for enhancing private sector preparedness, include: Minimize impact to essential organizational operations; Protect data and information to ensure continuity of operations; Gain industry recognition by promoting preparedness with suppliers and clients alike; Protect reputations and market-shares by reducing down time resulting from business disruption; and Gaining efficiencies through management systems. 11
