Big data analytics, used for everything from deep analysis of financial transactions to retail buying habits, is now being used to optimise the energy usage of commercial buildings from retail stores to data centres. It can be thought of as an engine management system for today s intelligent buildings, helping organisations make the most of information available from their building management systems (BMS), with the practical benefit of reductions in energy use. However Big Data Analytics requires the processing power of supercomputers and therefore large quantities of data must be pulled from the Building Management System (BMS), without disrupting the BMS s control and monitoring function to be processed in real time, off site. To enable this data transfer Synapsys has developed SIPd. What sets SIPd apart is the volume of data it can handle, its speed of operation, and the variety of information feeds it can process. It brings great flexibility over communications protocols and over the variety of building controls that can be read, providing an unprecedented depth of information for data mining. SIPd offers a simple way to capture big data, establishing high volume, real-time data exchange between a BMS and an external data analytics partner. SIPd builds on Synapsys proven SIP interfacing and monitoring technology. Connecting easily via Ethernet ports to a BMS, the SIPd device typically reads points around a building or estate at 15-minute intervals. These points might include meters for gas, electricity and biomass; humidity and temperature sensors; power usage meters; and output drives for fans, variable speed drives and heating and cooling parameters. The quantity and quality of data gathered gives plenty of scope for meaningful analysis, allowing the smallest fluctuations in building efficiency to be monitored, identified and adjusted. At sufficient scale, these small improvements in building performance can result in substantial reductions in running costs. Initial energy savings from installing a SIPd system can be striking, but even more substantial savings can result from using the system in the long term; ongoing fine-tuning of building controls will maintain building systems at optimal energy efficiency. 6 d A typical data analytics application It takes a huge amount of energy to operate a retail chain with multiple stores; a level of consumption which inevitably incurs high utility bills. In order to tackle those costs, one effective way to ensure that each store is operating efficiently, in terms of both energy efficiency and user comfort, is to monitor and constantly adjust each building s BMS system, controlling the heating, cooling, chillers, lighting etc. for optimum performance. However, this process can be time consuming, requiring additional investment in resources to carry it out. In addition, if performed manually, the monitoring and adjustment process may involve a lot of trial and error. Instead, the retail chain might choose to work with data analytics platforms and service providers, which have the capability to analyse huge amounts of data. SIPd is the enabler in this process, sitting on each store s BMS network and collecting data from the system. This data is automatically sent to the analytical platform or service, where it is analysed and an updated control strategy developed. This new strategy is then automatically sent back via the SIPd for upload to the store s BMS, with a view to improving energy performance. The ongoing process of monitoring and adjustment means that control strategies adapt to a store s changing conditions and requirements throughout the year, for optimum efficiency at all times. Not only does this result in reduced expenditure on energy costs for the retail chain, but also brings the added benefit of generating data which can identify underperforming equipment and even predict equipment failures, saving time and additional maintenance costs. Where the building is very sensitive to control conditions being changed remotely, eg Data Centres, then the recommendations may come back as control specification changes that can then be manually implemented. This obviously reduces the benefites of real time optimisation, however there are still significant benefits from gathering insights from big data analytics.
