1 EyeNut, in partnership with CASE STUDY Leading high street blue chip retailer - United Kingdom Problem A leading high street blue chip retailer, with over 3,000 stores, has invested in an integrated wireless lighting control and Micro BeMS solution, resulting in energy savings of 34% from lighting alone. With such a large portfolio of stores across the UK, the leading retailer was looking for a lighting controls solution that could integrate seamlessly with the Building Energy Management systems (BeMS) already in place, across a range of locations, to maximise energy savings. What s more, the solution needed to be flexible enough to allow retrofitting into any store, including large flagship superstores and small local outlets. Despite having such a large retail estate, the retailer had been deterred by the drawbacks of lighting controls. Complex wired systems previously deployed across a small portion of the company s retail estate, had required specialist knowledge and were too complex to install across the majority of the existing estate. The age of some stores, with the oldest built in 1920, had also prevented the retailer from rollingout more controllable options across its entire estate. The company epitomised the problems faced by the European retail industry, with a large portfolio of stores operating seven days a week, leading to high energy overheads. As with the majority of retail environments, the financial burden of energy costs had prompted the retailer to seek a technological solution to future-proof the lighting portfolio. A renovation plan across the entire estate included a strategy for implementing state of the art LED technology, accompanied by new generation building control solutions, including wireless lighting controls.this would deliver significant energy savings and a more efficient working environment. The blue chip retailer understood the importance of specifying a system that would be innovative, flexible, yet also easy to install, with reduced on-site commissioning times. Equally fundamental, however, was a system that could deliver complete synergy between lighting control and Micro BeMS. The stand-out solution was EyeNut, Harvard Technology s innovative IoT-enabled wireless control, monitoring and management system. Solution Specifying on behalf of the retailer, Matrix, a company of E.ON, selected EyeNut as part of a substantial retrofit roll-out. EyeNut was chosen as it delivers a wide range of benefits, whilst avoiding the many pitfalls associated with systems, such as disruptive and lengthy installation downtime, as well as overly complicated operating control. In fact, the entire commissioning process for each store was completed overnight, limiting store down-time, leading to substantial savings. EyeNut is an innovative remote access, cloud-based wireless control system for indoor lighting. It gives users the freedom to commission, configure and completely control their own lighting to maximise energy savings and reduce carbon emissions. A quick overview of any installation or indeed multiple installations, across different sites, showing key data including energy and cost savings, energy hotspots, as well as any potential lamp failures, can be accessed via the intuitive Graphic User Interface (GUI) through the internet on a laptop, tablet or even smartphone. The system rolled-out across six stores in an initial trial, comprises a cloud-based EyeNut hub, Gateways, as well as EyeNut enabled LED drivers. EyeNut was co-deployed in conjunction with a Micro BeMS system based around Matrix s Tridium Niagara framework. Results Designed to be easily retrofitted into all stores, EyeNut immediately delivered significant savings in both energy and carbon emissions. This installation has resulted in energy savings of 34% through wirelessly controlled LED lighting alone. When factoring in the additional decreases delivered by the integrated Micro BeMS, savings were further increased by 20% - leading to a significant financial saving per annum. EyeNut s unique connectivity to the Tridium BMS allows data transfer between all building control systems including air conditioning, heating, ventilation, lighting and security enabling information on scene setting,

Monthly tests and results are now recorded through the system in an industry accepted format, saving the retailer time and money, whilst also ensuring a safer environment for staff and shoppers. Lighting triggers are sent to individual luminaires via the unique link to EyeNut, allowing for dimming and Hardware used control of each light point. Over-the-Air (OTA) update capabilities ensure EyeNut will remain at the forefront of wireless lighting control technology ensuring a future-proofed system for the retail stores. This has limited necessary expenditure on updating components and wireless control systems in-store, which will guarantee savings in the long-term. Harvard Technology and Matrix worked closely with luminaire manufacturers throughout the installation, utilising the state-of-theart ZigBee programmable drivers to enable users to be more responsive. This ensured, regardless of the age of the store or types of fixtures installed, that lighting could be easily adapted and tailored to different store layouts without any redesign.
