1 Sreen layout & handling SCREEN LAYOUT AND HANDLING Generally, 7-1 Keyboard shortuts, 7-3 Keyboard Must Know, 7-5 Generally It is not intended that the manual or on-line Help should replae knowledge of the operation of Mirosoft Windows and it is reommended that you beome onversant with at least the basi funtions and keyboard tehniques from your Windows manual. As OnSight adheres strongly to the Mirosoft Windows style rules you will find that understanding and using the system is very easily aomplished. The sreen is laid out in a reognisable fashion with Menu bar, Toolbar and Status bar whih an all be aessed via the keyboard or mouse as appliable. As with other Mirosoft programs, where menu options are not available to the urrent sreen, they will be shown as 'greyed out'. The main onstituent areas of the main sreen are as follows: Copyright Visual Preision Ltd
2 Title bar General toolbar Measurement tool bar Results Grid Visibility ontrols Layer and Objet tools Status bar Graphis sreen (main pane) Additional measurement tools Image ontrol Navigator pane As an be seen, apart from the standard Toolbar and Menu bar positions OnSight looks like a CAD or DTP based system having one main graphi area in whih all of the data from the drawing is displayed with additional side panes (whih an be moved and doked in different loations). The main display area of the system an be onfigured to show and hide various layers and objets using the visibility ontrols (see multi media Help for more information regarding visibility). The program is operated and ontrolled in several different ways by: 1. Use of the on-sreen drop down menus from the menu bar 2. Using the mouse right lik supported loal menus (ontext menus) 3. Using buttons on the systems Toolbar. In pratie you will find yourself adopting all three tehniques. The system an be further ustomised for eah user using the Options area (Tools>Options) allowing the system to onfigure the system for use differently for eah user as the log-in. Copyright Visual Preision Ltd
3 Keyboard shortuts During use, the system an be made to operate faster by utilising knowledge of keyboard shortuts. In short, it s faster to press F4 than to selet the area measurement button by use of the mouse, so those users who want to squeeze the best from the system, this list is for you! Where two or more keys are shown ie bt it implies that the first key is held down whilst the seond key is pressed. If three keys are shown, the first two keys are held down whilst the third key is pressed. 5 Keyboard Must Know Even these onsolidated lists might seem ominous so to help even further we suggest the following list are the Must Know Keys whih will allow you drive the system in a very effiient manner. As an example, as most users insert the name of the objet they are about to measure in the Objet Properties Dialog (as it appears) their hands will naturally be on the keyboard. It is faster therefore to move the hands to the keyboard and press say o to measure an area than it is to selet the area measurement button with the mouse and then move hands to the keyboard to insert the objet name. These one and two seond time savings per objet add-up over the life a single projet to the point where they are easily measurable (we have done it so we know). During a single year the time and therefore ost savings are signifiant. You an add additional ones to your repertoire one these have been memorised. Just in ase you might want to print this page out and keep it on the desk for a time, we have made the type font bigger!
