VHO project Background Information Raimo Vuopionperä (ph.d.) Research Manager, NomadicLab (Ericsson Research Finland), Ericsson Research, Corporate Unit

Contents Multiple Access Why, What & Definitions IPv6 based Simultaneous Multiple Access (SIMA). SIMA - Public appearances Short History of VHO project.

Why Multiple Access? Availability of different (both wired and wireless) networks creates a need and offers possibilities. E.g. Enables new services, extension of current services and new possibilities for network capacity planning. Different users / applications / (s) have different needs. E.g. Users can route traffic to different interfaces based on their price, security, bandwidth, etc. requirements Terminals can more than one type of network providing the same type of end-user services regardless of type, and across borders. Current (Cellular) s are in a (very) good position to extend their service offerings beyond a single wireless network (subscriptions incl. several methods, e.g. 2.5/3G, WLAN, xdsl, etc.). Possibly Centralized AAA and session continuity (across borders). Capacity (NOT coverage) is and will be the issue in urban areas.

Multiple A (general) definition The ability to use multiple networks by dynamically placing the (individual) connections in the best available networks at any location, based on user/application/ needs. Fixed Always best-connected Mobile entity (node) WLAN 2/2.5G WLAN WLAN Bluetooth WLAN EDGE / UMTS

Some Definitions/Terms Vertical handovers/handoffs Ability to choose among multiple network interfaces (in a node). (All) traffic can be handed over from one interface to another. Usually from one technology to another. Seamless handovers/handoffs Network level transparency across different technologies Simultaneous Multiple Access ( SIMA ) Ability to use simultaneously multiple network interfaces (in a node). Route different traffic flows through different interfaces in parallel. Access and network selection could be based on user profiles/policies. Dynamic operation (possibly hidden from the end-user). Scope of mobility (Homogeneous vs. Heterogeneous environments) micro-mobility, intra-domain mobility (Horizontal handovers). macro-mobility, inter-domain/global mobility (Vertical handovers).

Horizontal/Vertical Handovers

Simultaneous Multiple Access Mobile IPv6 (SIMA) A research prototype developed in cooperation between NomadicLab & HUT (GO Core / MIPL) Based on Mobile IPv6, but works with IPv4 (requires tunneling). Network Layer based Multi- (Layer 3 corresponds to IP layer) Transparent to Correspondent Node and Home Agent. Dynamic use of multiple Care-Of and Home Addresses for a Mobile Node enables Multiple Access and Multi-homing. Without changing the standard MIPv6 signaling messages Data flows to different destination addresses and applications can be routed through different es Can be dynamically moved from one to another A policy-based connection management system controls the operation Independent of other mobility solutions, e.g. works on top of Normal Mobility schemas (e.g. GTP in GPRS).

A Multiple Access system (I.e. Positioning IP-layer MA) Services Operator IP(v6) backbone Public IP(v6) NW A c c e s s X Tunnel Endpoint AAA N e t w o r k s GPRS Wide Area NW IPv6 in IPv4 tunnel UMTS Wide Area NW WLAN Hot Spot NW Heterogeneous multi- Fixed LAN NW IPv6 IPv4

Multi- at the Network Layer (Layer 3 [~IP]) Advantages Supports any IPv6 capable technologies (GPRS, 3G, WLAN, Bluetooth, LAN,...) May communicate with all standard IPv6 nodes. The operation is transparent to applications. Disadvantages Handovers slower than at Layer 2 (Link Layer). Can be addressed by incorporating micro-mobility solutions (currently worked on at IETF and elsewhere). May lose packets during handovers. application layer TCP UDP L3: Network layer L2: Link layer L1: Physical Layer However, there is no packet loss if the involved interfaces do have a pre-configured care-of address (I.e. several networks are active at the same time) real-time performance.

SIMA Public appearances October 2000 (Ericsson, BT and SmarTone event in Hong Kong) IPv4/v6 interoperability, GPRS (container) - WLAN handovers,... December 2000 (Ericsson & SmarTone: Telecom Asia 2000, HK) Live GPRS used in WLAN-GPRS handovers. June 2001 (Ericsson contribution to 6WINIT: INET2001, Stockholm) Multiple Access (all connections moved) solution for LAN-WLAN-GPRS,... June 2001 (Ericsson contribution to 6WINIT: ICC2001, Helsinki) Limited version of INET2001 demo (only LAN-WLAN multiple ). Dec (Ericsson contribution to 6WINIT: IST2001, Dusseldorf) Real medical applications with vertical handovers between NW s. June 2002 (Ericsson contrib. to 6WINIT: INET2002, Washington DC) Real medical applications over transatlantic network with SIMA (W/LAN). Jan (6WINIT Final Review) SIMA over UMTS (+ WLAN, LAN) and applications & Automatic tunneling. Prototyping and customer demos E.g. Nov. 2001: SIMA (1 st version) demo for Sonera (World Premier). Oct This event (SIMA in TeliaSonera s Live Production Networks).

Short History of VHO Project Dec 1999: Original Idea for the network layer multiple was invented at a break of a meeting in Stockholm. Nov/Dec 2000: First Ericsson Research internal demonstrations of Network Layer Multiple Access. June 2001: First Public demonstrations (INET2001/ICC2001) Nov 2001: 1 st public SIMA demonstration to Sonera. June 2002: First general public demonstration of SIMA (INET2002) Jan. 2003: SIMA over UMTS. Jan 2002: TEKES NETS Thematic groups formed. Björn Melen (Ericsson) and Max Björkgren (Radionet) meet and discuss in the 1 st meeting of NETS 1a Verkkojen yhteiskäyttö. Idea to form common project is born!

Short History of VHO Project Spring 2002: People from HUT join the common project planning group. Initial discussions with Sonera. No application left to TEKES. Over the summer and Fall 2002 discussion to apply for TEKES project is intensified. Due to successful demonstration of SIMA prototype also Sonera decides to join the project planning group. Oct. 2002: TEKES application for the VHO project is left to TEKES. Dec. 2002: TEKES approves the VHO projects (3 indus. + 1 Univ.) Spring 2003: Detailed Project planned. Common public demo is one of the common milestones! Oct 2003: Common public demonstration of VHO project.
