3 What Is Cloud Computing? The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) defines cloud computing as: a model for enabling convenient, on demand network access to a shared pool of configurable fg computing resources that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction. 6 3

4 Visual Model Cloud Computing Cloud Computing Characteristics Cloud Computing has 5 essential characteristics: On demand self service that does not require human interaction with each service s provider Ubiquitous (bright) network access from networks and wirelessly Location independent resource pooling that serves all consumers Rapid elasticity allowing use to be scaled up or down and purchased in any quantity at any time Measured service that can be monitored, controlled and reported 8 4

5 Deployment Model Overview COMMUNITY CLOUD PRIVATE CLOUD Operated solely for an organization. Shared by several organizations and supports a specific community that has shared concerns PUBLIC CLOUD Made available to the general public or a large industry group and is owned by an organization selling cloud services. HYBRID CLOUD Composition of two or more clouds (private, community, or public) that remain unique entities but are bound together by standardized or proprietary technology that enables data and application portability Cloud Computing Enterprise Use Cases Private Cloud Enterprise to Cloud Enterprise to Cloud to Enterprise Changing Cloud Vendors Hybrid Cloud 5

6 Summarized History 1960 John McCarthy opined that "computation may someday be organized as a public utility" Early 1990s The term cloud comes into commercial use referring to large networks and the advancement of the Internet Salesforce.com is established, providing an on demand SaaS (Software as a Service) IBM details the SaaS concept in their Autonomic Computing Manifesto 2005 Amazon provides access to their excess capacity on a utility computing and storage basis 2007 Google, IBM, various Universities embark on a large scale cloud computing research project 2008 Gartner says cloud computing will shape the relationship among consumers of IT services, those who use IT services and those who sell them 11 Evolution to the Cloud 12 6
