5 Bleed Sizes Bankstown Canterbury Torch: Auburn Review Pictorial: Cooks River Valley Times: na na na Northern Beaches Weekender: The Weekender trims to a width of 275mm and a depth of 350mm. Bleed should extend at least 7 mm past these dimensions. If you are unsure of how to use bleed, please contact us PRIOR to submitting material. 3

6 Colour and Image Resolution Colour All colour advertisements supplied to Torch Publishing should be in PROCESS colour (CMYK). Torch Publishing does not print using SPOT colours. SPOT colour must be converted to process before submission. Black type should be in 100% black only (with no other process colours). 4 colour black text should be avoided unless we have specifically asked you to supply it. Reverse or outline text should not be used below 12 pt. Choose colours carefully as newspapers have a very narrow colour gamut - please don t expect us to reproduce fluro colours etc on newspaper stocks. Image Resolutions Colour and Grayscale images should be supplied with a resolution of no less than 180dpi and no greater than 220dpi. Any bitmap artwork should be scanned at or above 600dpi. 4

7 File Formats We accept any of the following file formats: 1. *.pdf (with embedded fonts) 2. *.tif (picture files only) 3. *.eps (with embedded fonts) 4. *.jpg (picture files only) 5. *.ps (with embedded fonts) 6. *.ai (with fonts outlined) Any other file or document formats will be returned.* Files can be sent via CD/DVD, or FTP. IMPORTANT NOTE: We do NOT accept Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, Excel or Publisher files as they are NOT suitable formats for professional printing. If you have a question regarding file formats, please contact us BEFORE sending the files. WE ALSO ACCEPT ADS VIA QUICKCUT * We are happy discuss the receipt of native QuarkXpress and InDesign documents but we will NOT ACCEPT FONTS unless we already have a licence for them. It is illegal for you to supply, or for us to accept, fonts for which we don t have an existing licence. Please do not ask us to receive fonts illegally as we will have to refuse. We DO NOT accept native Corel Draw documents. 5

10 Requesting an Electronic Proof Clients can request an electronic proof which can be accessed via your standard web browser. When requesting a proof with your advertising representative please ensure that you have: 1. Access to the internet 2. A basic understanding of web pages and websites 3. A recent version of Adobe Acrobat Reader - Please note: For various security reasons, we DO NOT proofs. To view a web proof: 1. Contact your advertising representative. You MUST do this first. 2. You will be given a username and password. 3. Go to where xxxx is your Torch assigned ad number 4. you will then be requested for your username and password 5. click on the proof name to download and view Electronic proofing is only used as a final proof, all previous proofs will be faxed. As your computer monitor is not colour calibrated to our printing specifications, we cannot guarantee the colour shown on your screen will be the same as the one that is printed. Electronic proofs are low resolution and used as a rough guide only to the colour of your advertisement. They should not be considered colour accurate. 8

11 FTP Information The purpose of this document is to assist clients who may need to send us material via FTP (File Transfer Protocol) Overview Torch can receive files by many methods , CD, DVD etc but many times the most practical way of sending material is via FTP. This is due to some inherit problems in using . The major problems are: File Size: Many ISP s set small limits on attachments. 2MB is common and if you attempt to send a larger file it will simply bounce back to you. Destination: Generally you will be sending to a person rather than the company. This can cause major problems if that person uses a laptop and is not in the office. What happens if they re on holidays or sick? Delivery Delay: When load gets heavy on mailservers they will sometimes queue messages for delivery at a later time. This may be several hours and this may not be an acceptable delay. SPAM filters: the file you re sending could get caught in a SPAM trap and either lost forever or for an unacceptably long period of time. FTP overcomes all of these issues. Here s how it works. Torch Publishing have an FTP server which is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. 9

12 After we ve setup your account, you connect to us using an FTP client application*. Once connected you will see a folder which will have been created for you - this is your own little space on our server. Once you see this, it s just a matter of dragging your files into the folder and waiting for them to transfer. * An FTP client is a small application (program) which allows you to connect to FTP servers. There are many different FTP clients available and we ll list our favourites here. Most of these are shareware applications and are quite inexpensive. Mac Users: Transmit (our personal favourite), RBrowser, Fetch, Cyberduck, Captain FTP. These applications should be available via Version- Tracker.com at Transmit can be found here: Windows Users: CuteFTP, Filezilla, Smart FTP, FTP Voyager. Cute FTP seems to be the most popular but we also recommend clients look at the free FileZilla. 10

13 Once you have downloaded you FTP client and we ve established an account for you, it s time to connect and test things out. You will have been supplied with a username and password - this prevents other people being able to log onto your FTP space. All FTP clients will have connections settings which you need to enter - fortunately this is very easy. Take a look at this screen shot of the Transmit connect window shown here. 11

14 The server (often called Host ) is always: ftp.torchpublishing.com.au The username is the username we have supplied and the password is, you ve probably already guessed, the password we gave you. You don t need to enter anything in the initial path as we configure that at our end. Once connected you ll see a folder we have created for you - in this case the folder is called fg Once here, open the folder and place your files inside. If you get an Access Denied error, it means you haven t opened the folder. Normally a progress bar of some sort will appear to inform you of the files progress. Make sure you don t quit the program until the files have been completely sent. When you are connected to our server, you are connected in real time to us - there is no processing by other servers, no SPAM traps and no size limits on the files you send. If you experience any problems sending files or connecting to our FTP server, please contact our pre-press or IT department and we ll endeavour to walk you through things. If you have any other questions you d like answered, please feel free to contact your normal Torch Publishing representative and they ll direct you to the right person. 12

15 Preparing a job for submission When sending material to us, whether it be a simple ad for printing in one of our papers or a major commercial printing job, it s important our specifications and requirements are followed carefully. This will ensure you get the best possible results. File Formats Even though we ve covered file formats already it is worth mentioning again here. We accept PDF (our preferred file format), as well as.jpg,.tif,.ai and.ps files. Fonts must be embedded. Please DO NOT supply us with a Word, Powerpoint, Publisher or Excel file - they are NOT suitable for professional publishing. Size, bleed and trim First and foremost, we need to ensure your file is the correct size. If you are submitting an ad, your advertising representative will have given you a size. Please make sure the file is the correct size. Whilst we have the capacity to scale a PDF file slightly, it should always be considered wrong to supply an ad at an incorrect size. if you are supplying a completed paper or magazine, you will have been given a TRIM size and (probably) an IMAGE AREA. The trim size is the finished size of your publication - after trimming. 13

16 Bleed Bleed is when parts of your job run off the edge of the page. This is common in glossy magazines. When we request bleed, it means we need you to extend your artwork at least 5 mm past the trim size of the publication. See the illustration below. The yellow line represents the TRIM size. This is the finished size of the publication. The edge of the photograph represents the BLEED - it needs to extend past the TRIM by at least 5 mm. The blue line represents the IMAGE area - you should keep all text content INSIDE this area - it should be 10mm inside the TRIM area. 18 Colour Settings One of the most complex areas of material submission relates to colour management. We try and keep our advice as simple as possible to reduce the number of things which can go wrong. If you follow these rules, your print job should run well. 1) Convert all photographs and graphics to CMYK. If you have Fairfax newspaper separation settings available, use those. If you don t, we recommend using SWOP newsprint which is available in most versions of Photoshop. 19 Final Checking and Pre-Flighting It is important you check your file prior to sending it to us. We can supply our pre-flight settings file for you to use. Rightly or wrongly, we assume if you are producing an ad or publication for printing, you have the appropriate skills to do it properly. As we receive several hundred ads and pages each week we simply don t have the manpower to pre-flight them all. It is your responsibility to ensure your files meet the specifications laid out in this document. At the very least, please ensure the following: 1) All fonts are embedded 2) All graphics converted to CMYK 2) All spot colours converted to CMYK (we don t print spot colour) 3) Trim and image size is correct 4) Bleed is applied where necessary 5) No bleed if not required 17

20 Trapping When using solid type overprinting a background stipple it is recommended the background screen (stipple or image) be no greater than 30% density. This allows for dot gain and provides the necessary contrast between text matter and the background image. Type size should be no less than 12 pt and a bold type is preferred. The recommended type size for reverse type is 10pt. Please note: It is not recommended to reverse type out of pure yellow. If over-printing black ink over a coloured background, please be aware that it may not be completely black in the final print - a colour cast from the background colour may be visible. To avoid this, you can knockout the background in your page layout program. Alternatively, you can use a black which has some other colours added (eg: 100k, 1%c, 1%m, 1%y). This will encourage the RIPs to knockout the colour. You can also use a rich black (100%k, 50%c) to give a more solid appearance. When using type smaller than 10pt, we DO NOT recommend knocking out colours unless you have done it in your page layout program and have specified the correct amount of trapping. 18

21 Photographs All photographs which are included in your files should be converted to CMYK using the colour settings described earlier. If supplying photos independently, they should be supplied as.jpg,.tif or.eps files. As a general rule, all digital photos should be sharpened. As the printing process will soften photos slightly, it is better to slightly exaggerate the sharpening of photos. Required highlights should be a minimum of 3% and required shadow detail no heavier than 85%. Mid tones should allow for dot gain of approximately 30%. If you have a particularly difficult picture, it is better to err on the side of too light rather than too dark. 19

22 Copyright Information All material supplied to Torch Publishing for the purpose of printing MUST be free of copyright restrictions. 1. All artwork and images for which you don t own the copyright must not be supplied for printing 2. Fonts will not be accepted unless they are embedded into one of the file formats discussed earlier in this document. 3. Any advertisement which has been created by another publication is covered by copyright and cannot be reproduced by us. If an ad is created by a third party (agency, studio) for the explicit purpose of multi-publication reproduction, we are happy to accept it. 4. We will NOT search the Internet to try and find artwork for you. Just because a picture appears on the Internet does not mean you have the right to use it in your own advertisement. The Internet is covered by Copyright in the same way any printed material is. Using material from the Internet with the appropriate permission is illegal.
