2 Assembly Procedure Materials: Piezoelectric Sensor Device NI DAQ Card USB Cable LabVIEW Enabled Computer High Voltage Amplifier Electrometer (2) ±24V DC Power Supplies (10) BNC Cables (3) BNC-to-Alligator Cable Male BNC-to-Male Banana Adapter Female BNC-to-Female Banana Adapter Red Male Banana Cable Black Male Banana Cable Air Hose Compressed Air Tank Assembly Process: 1. Connect the NI DAQ Card to the LabVIEW computer via the USB Cable. 2. Connect the Vin BNC terminal of the High Voltage Amplifier to the AO.0 BNC analog output terminal of the DAQ card with a BNC cable. 3. Connect the Vout BNC terminal of the High Voltage Amplifier to the HV terminal on the piezoelectric sensor device with a BNC Cable. 4. Connect the AO.1 BNC terminal on the DAQ card to the BNC cable connected to the multiplier circuit labeled InputDC. 5. Connect the User 1 BNC terminal on the DAQ card to the BNC cable connected to the multiplier chip labeled InputWave. 7. Connect the red banana connection from the multiplier circuit, labeled VS +, to the first power supply s positive 25V voltage terminal. 8. Connect the blue banana connection from the multiplier circuit, labeled VS -, to the first power supply s negative 25V voltage terminal. 9. Connect the brown banana connection from the multiplier circuit, labeled Ground, to the first power supply s ground terminal.

3 10. Connect the green banana connection from the multiplier circuit, labeled Ground, to the other ground banana connection, which is connected to the first power supplies ground terminal. 11. Connect the PF.0 BNC terminal on the DAQ card to the BNC cable connected to the motor circuit, labeled Motor. 12. Connect the PF.1 BNC terminal on the DAQ card to the wire connected to the device circuitry, labeled Relay, with a BNC-to-Alligator cable. Connecting the red clip of the alligator cable to the Relay wire will accomplish this, and the black clip of the alligator cable can then be connected to the ground wire from the power supply. 13. Connect the PF.2 BNC terminal on the DAQ card to the wire connected to the device circuitry, labeled Air, with a BNC-to-Alligator cable. Connecting the red clip of the alligator cable to the Air wire will accomplish this, and the black clip of the alligator cable can then be connected to the ground wire from the power supply. 14. Connect the PF.3 BNC terminal on the DAQ card to the BNC cable connected to the motor relay, labeled Motor Direction. 15. Connect the BNC cable labeled Output from the multiplier circuit to the BNC terminal labeled Drive on the piezoelectric device. 16. Connect the AI.1 BNC terminal on the DAQ card to the BNC terminal labeled Sense on the piezoelectric device. 17. Connect the AI.2 BNC terminal on the DAQ card to the back of the BNC terminal labeled Drive on the piezoelectric device with a BNC-to-Alligator cable. This can be done by connecting the red clip of the alligator portion of the cable to the center pin of the reverse side of the Drive terminal. The black clip of the alligator side can then be connected to the ground portion of the Drive terminal, which is the outer ring of the terminal. 18. Connect the A1.3 BNC terminal on the DAQ card to the male BNC-to-male banana adapter. Then connect this end of the cable to the output banana terminals, located on the back of the Electrometer. 19. Connect the input BNC terminal of the Electrometer to the to the Elect BNC terminal on the piezoelectric device. 20. Connect the female BNC-to-female banana adapter to the 24V BNC terminal on the piezoelectric device. 21. Connect the female BNC-to-female banana adapter, which is now connected to the 24V BNC terminal, to the second power supply s 25V output terminals with the red and black banana cables. These cables can be connected to their respective color terminals on the banana adapter, and to the positive 25V output terminal for the red cable and ground for the black cable.

4 22. Connect air hose to the air solenoid nozzle on the piezoelectric device and to the compressed air tank.

5 Operating Procedure The following procedure assumes that the functioning device is completely assembled. Furthermore, it assumes that every component is off, but powered. Finally, it assumes that the computer running the LabVIEW program is on, and the user interface is active. 1. Approach the device 2. Turn on the DAQ card by pressing the switch on the top right section of the DAQ card. 3. Turn on the High Voltage Operational Amplifier by switching the power switch up to the on position. Note: for the remainder of the test, do not touch green wires connected to the device or the grid itself. 3. Turn the electrometer on by turning the meter dial to Center Zero.

6 4. Starting with the bottom power supply, remove the red wire connection from the positive terminal. Set this connection aside. 5. Turn on this bottom power supply by pressing the power button down.

7 6. Press the Output On/Off button. 7. Press the +25V button. Turn the Adjust knob so that the display reads 24.0 volts.

8 (Press the +25V Select Button) (Using the Adjust knob, change the voltage to 24.0V)

9 (Adjust until 24.0V volts is displayed) 8. Now press the Output On/Off button so that the display reads OUTPUT OFF. 9. Reconnect the free red wire connection that was disconnected earlier to the same positive terminal under 25V on the bottom power supply. Push gently until it stops. 10. Now disconnect the red and blue wire connections from the top power supply. Set these connections aside.

10 11. Turn on the top power supply by pressing the power button down. 12. Press the Output On/Off button. 13. Press the +25V button. Use the Adjust knob to change the value on the screen to 12V. 14. Press the -25V button. Use the Adjust knob to change the value on the screen to -12V.

11 (Locate and press the -25V button) (Use the Adjust knob to change the value to -12.0V 15. Press the Output On/Off button so that the display reads OUTPUT OFF. 16. Reconnect the free red wire connection that was disconnected earlier to the same positive terminal under 25V on the top power supply. Push gently until it stops. Reconnect the free blue wire connection that was disconnected earlier to the same negative terminal under 25V on the top power supply. Push gently until it stops.

12 (Reconnect the red wire connection to the top power supply) (Reconnect the blue wire connection to the top power supply) 17. Press the Output On/Off button on both power supplies. 18. Turn the red knob on the air tank valve all the way to the On position by rotating it counter-clockwise until it stops.

13 19. On the computer screen, click Start. 20. When a dialogue box appears on the screen, wait briefly until the motor has stopped moving. 21. Open the jar containing the desired sample. Use the sample placement spoon to scoop out an amount of developer so that spoon is filled. Be careful not to strike any objects with the spoon so that no significant amount of sample is lost.

14 22. Empty the spoon onto the middle of the grid. Set spoon aside. Put the lid back on the jar and tighten. 23. On the computer screen, click Ok in the prompt. Wait until next prompt appears on the computer screen. (Press OK in the prompt and wait for new prompt to appear

15 (New prompt will appear and ask for the Electrometer to be zeroed) 24. Zero the electrometer by pressing the Zero Check knob. Click Ok in the prompt box on the computer screen. 25. After the Finished light is lit and the sample has been blown off of the piezo, click the Stop button on the computer screen. 26. Record the Tribo Charge and Toner Concentration outputs. 27. Turn off the High Voltage Operational Amplifier by flipping the power switch down to the off position.

16 28. Turn off the electrometer by rotating the Meter knob counter-clockwise to the Power Off position. 29. Press the power buttons on both power supplies so that they are in the Off position. The displays will go black. 30. On the air tank, turn the red knob clockwise until it stops. This will be the off position. 31. Turn off the DAQ card by pressing the power button.
