4 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Overview XrayVision DICOM Capture View, known as DCV, is a DICOM-based dental imaging suite that is scalable to any size organization. DCV is used to standardize the capture, storage, retrieval, and viewing of images across an entire organization. DCV supports most all imaging devices utilized in dentistry, including: Intra-oral sensors, Phosphor Plate Scanners, Panoramic / Cephalometric units, 3D / CAT scan, Tomography, Intra-oral Cameras, Extra-oral Cameras, Endo scopes, and Flatbed Scanners. DCV can act as a full enterprise standalone PACS or can serve as the capture modality that will automatically forward to an existing PACS. DCV s open architecture enables the freedom to use a wide variety of capture devices, while maintaining industry standards. The US Army and US Navy currently use DCV as their global solution for managing all of their dental clinics worldwide, which allows for centralized storage of all images to provide global access to patient information. XrayVision DCV has numerous bridging capabilities from a standard command line integration, data extraction and auto importing patient demographic, barcode scanning, DICOM Worklist, HL7, and custom data bridges. 1.2 Installation Methods XrayVision DCV is a scalable enterprise application, ranging from a single stand-alone installation to full-scale multi-site enterprise installations. As a result, XrayVision DCV and DCV Data Manager can be configured and implemented in several ways to meet the needs of any client network. The three most common implementations of XrayVision DCV are: Network Shared Installation: XrayVision DCV is most commonly installed in a shared location on a server, with shortcuts placed on the desktop of each workstation. The shared location contains the DCV application, Apteryx Database, DCV Data Manager, and all other supporting files and applications. Because everything is stored centrally, application upgrades and changes need to be made only once Local Installation with Image Forwarding: XrayVision DCV can be installed locally on each client workstation with a temporary database and configured to forward images directly to a DICOM server and purge the local database. If the network becomes unavailable, images will be held locally until they can be successfully forwarded to the respective DICOM server Shared Installation with Local Database and Image Forwarding: XrayVision DCV can be installed in a shared network location with a temporary image store on each workstation. After image capture has completed, all images will then be forwarded to the DICOM server and purged from the temporary storage location. If the network becomes unavailable, images will be held locally until they can be successfully. Although very similar to the previous method, this configuration allows the application managed more easily from the central shared install location. 1.3 DCV Data Manager DCV Data Manager is a PACS (Picture Archive and Communication System) server application that is utilized in conjunction with XrayVision DCV. DCV Data Manager acts as the primary repository for all images on the network, storing them in an Apteryx or SQL database. Apteryx, Inc. Page 4 of 25

5 Data Manager also manages image forwarding schedules and coordinates transmission of images to remote locations if necessary and facilitates integration with third party information systems. DCV Data Manager is highly recommended if XrayVision DCV will be used on more than five computers or if images will be transmitted to other locations. A free fully-functional 30-day trial of DCV Data Manager is included with each XrayVision DCV install. For additional information regarding DCV Data Manager and it s features and implementations, please contact Apteryx Support at APTERYX ( ). 1.4 System Requirements Due to the enterprise nature of XrayVision DCV, server requirements are directly correlated with the size and expected growth of the database and the expected number of users that will be using the application simultaneously. Please contact Apteryx Technical Support for specific system requirements for your site at APTERYX ( ) Workstations must meet the following requirements: Ideal System Recommendations: 1.0 GHz or higher processor (faster is always better, especially for servers) 256 MB of RAM (again, more is always better) 40GB Hard Drive Name-brand video capture card* (ATI, Hauppauge) CD-R drive 100Mbps or higher Local Area Network (TCP/IP preferred) Minimum System Requirements: Although we don t suggest these specifications for today s digital dental office, Apteryx has set the following as minimums to operate XrayVision DCV: 400Mhz or higher processor 64MB of RAM (128MB or higher is optimum) CD-ROM drive Local Area Network for networked installations (TCP/IP preferred; a 100Mbps network is optimum) A name-brand video capture card is required for image capture from analog video and intra-oral cameras. Digital sources typically use FireWire or USB for import. XrayVision DCV is designed for Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, Server 2003, Server 2008 operating systems including Terminal Services and Citrix. Apteryx, Inc. Page 5 of 25

6 1.5 Quick Notes Before Beginning If you have a Server It is highly recommended that XrayVision DCV is installed on a shared drive of the Server (even if installing a trial version of the product). XrayVision DCV has built-in technologies that optimize the use of the application on a network and enables the software to be run from all the workstations in that network even though it is only installed in ONE (server) location. When installing to a Server, be sure that the software is installed on a shared drive where other workstations can access it with FULL READ/WRITE PERMISSIONS. It is not necessary to install XrayVision DCV from the target computer or network. As long as the installer has full read/write permissions, it can be installed on the server from any client workstation Installing to a Directory other than the Default Directory Create the destination folder first before running the installation Installing on a Network Due to Apteryx's unique Single Installation, Multiple Use (SIMU) technology, the software can be installed in one location, on a network, for client workstations to access. To install the software on a server/network, create the destination folder on the server and share the folder with full read/write permissions for 'Everyone' before running the installation program Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows Server 2008 Installs To avoid issues with the Vista/Win7/Server 2008 User Access Control (UAC) feature, Apteryx recommends running the installer programs as an Administrator by rightclicking the installer's.exe file and selecting -Run as Administrator-. Additionally, Apteryx recommends users avoid installing the application in the default \program files(x86)\ directory to prevent possible issues with the Windows VirtualStore feature. Apteryx, Inc.
