1 St John s Curriculum Overview Year 8 Introduction Subject title Mathematics During the course of the year students will build upon their knowledge Setting arrangements Time allowance each fortnight Students placed in sets based on prior attainment in Year 7 In each band there will be sets 1 to 4 (or 5) 6 hours and learning from Year 7 from the following units of study: Number, geometry, data handling and algebra. Topics, Skills and Assessment covered during the course Term Topic Subject specific topic questions Subject Content and Assessment details Skills Term 1 What shapes are houses and castles made from and what is the volume of a plinth that a Greek god rests on? Area and Perimeter Area and perimeter of 2D shapes, including compound shapes Circumference and area of a circle Surface Area and Volume Surface area and volume of cubes, cuboids and right angled prisms Surface area and volume of cones, spheres and pyramids Pythagoras and Trigonometry Pythagoras to calculate missing side lengths in right angled triangles Trigonometric ratios to calculate missing side lengths and angles in right angled triangles Angles Calculating angles in triangles and quadrilaterals Drawing and calculating bearings Calculating interior and exterior angles in polygons Circle Theorems Identifying angles in simple circle theorems will be placed on SMHW by the class teacher

Fraction Arithmetic Finding fractions of whole number quantities Add, subtract, multiply and divide by an integer Add, subtract, multiply and Fractions, Decimals and Percentages Convert between and recognise the equivalence of fraction, decimal and percentage conversions Order fractions by converting to a decimal Change a recurring decimals into a fraction Percentages Calculating percentages of amounts Reverse percentages 30 minute skills based assessment will be completed in class. Describe in symbols or words the rule for a quadratic sequence Algebra Basics Use letter symbols to represent unknown numbers or variables Simplify linear algebraic expressions by collecting like terms Multiply a single term over a brackets Solving equations Constructing and solving linear equations with integer coefficients with unknowns on one side. Construct and solve linear equations with integer coefficients where the unknown is on either or both sides, with and without brackets. Construct and solve linear equations with integer coefficients with and without brackets and negative signs anywhere in the equation.
