1 5.4 PROBLEM SOLVING Three- Dimensional Solids? Essential Question How can making a model help you identify and describe attributes of three-dimensional solids? How can making a model help you identify and describe threedimensional solids? Lesson Opener Making Connections Invite children to tell you what they know about three-dimensional solids. Hold up models of three-dimensional solids, one at a time. What is the name of the solids? (Answers will vary.) What are the shapes of the faces on the three-dimensional solids? (Answers will vary.) Using the Digital Lesson You might have children model the lesson by using clay to try to form a sphere, a cylinder, and a cube. Learning Task Have children look at the three objects on the screen. What three objects are parts of the guessing game? (a baseball, a trash can, and a dog house) How are the objects alike? (Possible answer: they are all three-dimensional) How are the objects different? (Possible answer: some have flat surfaces, some have curved surfaces, they have faces that are different shapes) What clue is given by one of the children? (Possible answer: The object is shaped like a cylinder.) Literacy and Mathematics Choose one or more of the following activities. Invite children to play I Spy using three-dimensional objects in the classroom. Have children take turns, spying objects of different shapes. Have children work together to create a mural of pictures cut out from magazines that show real-world objects shaped like rectangular prisms, cylinders, cones, and cubes. Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills Geometry and Measurement.6.B Distinguish between attributes that define a two-dimensional or three-dimensional figure and attributes that do not define the shape.6.e Identify three-dimensional solids, including spheres, cones, cylinders, rectangular prisms (including cubes), and triangular prisms, and describe their attributes using formal geometric language MATHEMATICAL PROCESSES..B Use a problem-solving model..d Communicate mathematical ideas and reasoning..e Create and use representations..f Analyze mathematical relationships Are You Ready? 2 Unlock the Problem Read the following aloud to the class. Emma wants to draw an object for the riddle in the box. Read the riddle in the box while the children follow along. I am a toy. I have only a curved surface. Work through the Problem Solving graphic organizer together. Guide children to solve the problem by asking these questions. What does Emma want to do? draw an object for the riddle What information is she given? The object is a toy. The object has only a curved surface. Why do you think looking at the models of the solids can help Emma solve the riddle? She can look at the surfaces on the solids to help her find the solid with only a curved surface. How will Emma know what object to draw? Possible answer: A solid with only a curved surface is a sphere. So, Emma will need to draw a toy that is shaped like a sphere. What other objects could Emma draw for the riddle? Possible answers: a balloon, a soccer ball, a marble Name 5.4? Essential Question Unlock the Problem Emma wants to draw an object for this riddle. Read What information am I given? PROBLEM SOLVING Three- Dimensional Solids toy The object is a with only a curved surface. I am a toy. I have only a curved surface. Solve Plan What is my plan or strategy? Show how you solve the problem. I look at the solids that have a curved surface. A sphere has only a curved surface. A ball is a toy that is a sphere. How can making a model help you identify and describe three-dimensional solids? HOME CONNECTION Your child solved this problem by looking at models of three-dimensional solids and finding a model with only a curved surface. Strategy: Describe Visual / Verbal / Linguistic Partners Materials: real objects or pictures of objects representing a cone, a cube, a cylinder, a triangular prism, a rectangular prism, and a sphere; for example: an ice cream cone, a toy block that is a cube, a can, a triangular prism-shaped tent, a rectangular tissue box, and a globe Children can demonstrate and build proficiency with math vocabulary by describing shapes. Have each pair choose one of the objects to describe. Ask them to describe the object by telling about the faces, vertices, and flat or curved surfaces. Ask pairs to share their descriptions. Have the class guess which object they are describing. Have them identify the solid.
3 Try Another Problem Draw an object for the riddle. Use models of solids to help you.... I have 6 faces that are squares. I am a hat. I have flat surface. I have curved surface. I am a box. I have faces that are squares. I have 4 faces that are rectangles. Math Talk: Possible answer: I can look at the model I drew to see if it has the surfaces, faces, edges, and vertices to match the riddle. 564 five hundred sixty-four What information am I given? What is my plan or strategy? Check children s drawings. Accept all reasonable drawings. Math Talk Mathematical Processes How does making a model help you solve a riddle? Try Another Problem Use the questions below to guide children through Exercise, and use similar questions to guide them through Exercises and. Some children may have difficulty drawing solids. Encourage them to draw as well as they can, and accept all reasonable drawings. What information does the riddle give you? The object is a block; the object has 6 faces that are squares. Which solids have faces that are squares? A cube has faces that are squares, and other rectangular prisms can have some faces that are squares. Which solid has 6 faces that are squares? a cube How will you know what object to draw? Possible answer: I will draw a block that is shaped like a cube. Ask volunteers to describe the blocks they drew. How are all the blocks you drew alike? They are all shaped like a cube. How are the blocks different? Possible answers: They are different sizes, different colors, and have different designs on them. Math Talk Mathematical Processes Use Math Talk to focus on children s understanding of how making a model helps them solve the riddles. Enrich Visual / Verbal / Linguistic Partners Materials: pictures of or real objects representing a cone, a cube, a cylinder, a triangular prism, a rectangular prism, and a sphere COMMON ERRORS Error Children may draw an object that matches only part of the riddle. Springboard to Learning Encourage children to reread the riddle after they have drawn the object. You may want to suggest that as they reread the riddle they underline the words that helped them know what object to draw. Some children may find it helpful to have models of the solids available. Write the names of three-dimensional figures on the board. Read the following riddles and have students write the answer. Explain that some riddles might have more than one answer. Encourage children to work in pairs. I have no flat surfaces. What am I? sphere I only have flat surfaces. Some surfaces are different sizes than others. They all have the same shape. What am I? rectangular prism I have a curved surface. What am I? sphere or cone or cylinder I only have flat surfaces. What am I? rectangular prism or triangular prism or cube Go to Go to thinkcentral.com for additional enrichment activities in the Enrich Activity Guide. Lesson
