7 INTRODUCTION TracePro 7.7 is a minor release. This document serves as a guide for you to transition from TracePro 7.6 to 7.7. The major enhancements in TracePro 7.7 are improvements for Photorealistic Rendering, the new Candela Viewer, the Property Database Update feature, a new Automotive Lighting Toolkit for analyzing Candela plots against automotive lighting standards, and other more minor features. WHAT S NEW IN TRACEPRO 7.7? Changes in TracePro 7.7 compared to 7.6 are summarized as follows: Candela Viewer Automotive Lighting Toolkit Raytrace Mode Prompt Property Database Update Viewing Candela Plots from the Simulation File Manager Photorealistic Rendering o New features o Improvement in rendering speed New closed loop for defining surfaces in the 3D Interactive Optimizer CANDELA VIEWER You can now view Candela Plots from previously-saved Candela Plot text files. To do this, select Tools Candela Viewer to display a File Open dialog. Browse to the Candela Plot text file, and click Open to display the Candela Plot. To open Candela Options for the plot, right-click on the plot window and select Candela Options from the pop-up menu. Some of the options that are available in the live Candela Options are not available for saved text files. AUTOMOTIVE LIGHTING TOOLKIT TracePro's Automotive Lighting Toolkit enables you to compare candela output to various automotive lighting standards. You can analyze your design's compliance with ECE, SAE, and FMVSS standards. The toolkit provides visualization tools and regulation tables to certify that simulated results meet the various automotive standards and provides pass/fail criteria for each regulation. To open the Automotive Lighting Toolkit, select Tools Automotive Lighting Toolkit. The Automotive Lighting Toolkit has its own help system. 1

8 RAYTRACE MODE PROMPT When you start a ray-trace, TracePro will prompt you with a dialog box asking whether you wish to trace in Analysis Mode or Simulation Mode. This feature is aimed at new customers, and prospective customers doing a trial of TracePro. It is designed to help them appreciate TracePro s unique and powerful Analysis Mode Raytrace and its tradeoff of memory consumption versus using Simulation Mode. In addition, Simulation Mode is now the default ray-tracing mode for new documents. You can turn off the prompt by checking the checkbox in the dialog box for Do not display this dialog box, or by changing the setting in View Options Raytrace Mode. Figure 1. PROPERTY DATABASE UPDATE There is now a much simpler way to update your properties with the latest data from Lambda Research. To update your Properties Database, select Help Update Property Database. TracePro will download the most current database from the Customer Support Center at and import it into your local database. This will not overwrite or delete any properties that you have created and saved in your database. 2

9 VIEWING CANDELA PLOTS FROM THE SIMULATION FILE MANAGER You can now view candela plots from *.sim files containing the appropriate data. For viewing Candela Plots for rays incident on an Exit Surface, first select Tools Simulation File Manager, then browse to the Index File (*.ndx) for the simulation you wish to view. Then select the appropriate Exit Surface *.sim file from the grid. The View list at the bottom of the window will have choices for Candela Plots. Choose the appropriate one and the plot will open. To view a Missed Rays Candela Plot, select the can simulation file you wish to use for viewing, then click View to display the plot. To change the options for the plot, right-click on the plot and select Candela Options from the pop-up menu. PHOTOREALISTIC RENDERING Photorealistic rendering has been enhanced in three ways: 1) you can now display approximate luminance as determined by the photorealistic rendering algorithm; 2) you can control the gamma of the photorealistically rendered image; and 3) rendering time has been dramatically reduced, especially for lower Quality settings. The new options are available in the Photorealistic Rendering Options dialog box. In addition, you can choose between grayscale and color-coded luminance values, and you can optionally set the minimum and maximum of luminance scale for display. For an accurate calculation of luminance, use the Luminance Trace feature of TracePro, at Raytrace Trace Luminance/Radiance. Figure 2. 10 FREEFORM CLOSED-LOOP PROFILE IN THE 3D INTERACTIVE OPTIMIZER The TracePro 7.7 release features a new profile definition for the 3D interactive optimizer. The new feature allows you to define a profile in the form of a spline closed loop using any number of control points. The control points are entered interactively using the mouse. The new profile can be found in Add surface 2D profile Freeform loop. An example freeform loop is shown in Figure 3. Once created, the loop can be extruded or swept to form a solid. Figure 3.
