Ratio, Rate, Unit Rate, Rate Unit Grade 6 Math Vocabulary Ratio, Rate, Unit Rate, Rate Unit Representing Equivalent Ratios Double Number Line 0 Ratio: An ordered pair of numbers which are not both zero. 0:, 0 to,. Ratio Relationship: The set of all ratios that are equivalent 0:, to,, etc. (will generally use measurement quantities, i.e. $0 for packs of diet soda) Tape Diagram Rate: Indicates how many units of one quantity there are for every unit of the second quantity. Ratio relationship given by $0 for every packs of diet cola can be written as the rate. dollars/ pack. Unit Rate: The unit rate is. because it is the value of the ratio. Rate Unit: The rate unit is dollars/ pack of diet cola because it costs. dollars for every pack of diet cola. Double Number Line Percent Model Area Model Dividing Fractions Bar Model Dividing Fractions Model shows use of a double number line to find % of. This model may also be used to find the percent 7 equivalent for the fraction. Model shows a shaded region representing of the whole, divided into equal pieces, resulting in smaller pieces, each th of the whole. The circled portion represents the solution: = The model shows many copies of are in.. This may be used to find how = 9
Dividing Fractions Common Denominators Using common denominators, the problem becomes: = or, Multiplicative Inverse 0 = = A multiplicative inverse of a number is a number such that the product of both numbers is. Multiplicative inverses do not always have to be the reciprocal. GCF and LCM The GCF and LCM of any pair of numbers can be found easily by use of prime factorization and a Venn diagram. The GCF is the product of factors in the intersection of the Venn: GCF = x = 6 The LCM is the product of factors in all regions: LCM = x x x x = Absolute Value The absolute value of a number is the distance between the number and zero on the number line. A number and its opposite have the same absolute value. Opposite 8 () x Equation + 8 = + Area The formula for area of all parallelograms and triangles can be derived from the area of a rectangle. Opposite numbers are the same distance from zero, but they are on opposite sides of zero. The opposite of 0 is 0. y l + w bh An expression is a numerical expression, or it is the result of replacing some (or all) of the numbers in a numerical expression with variables. s, have no equal sign so may be evaluated but never solved. x = = () 8 = 6y l x w = A An equation is a statement of equality between two expressions. A parallelogram can be converted to a rectangle with the same height and base. Since all triangles are half of a parallelogram, the area is half the area of a parallelogram with the same base and height.
Net Altitude and Base of a Triangle Volume of a Right Rectangular Prism Net of Rect. prism A net is a two-dimensional figure that can be folded to create a three-dimensional solid. An altitude of a triangle is a perpendicular segment from a vertex of a triangle to the line containing the opposite side. The opposite side is called the base. The volume of a right rectangular prism is the product of the area of any base and its corresponding height. Any face can be the base. The height must be perpendicular to the base. Base Height Volume Bottom (0in x in) 6 in V = 0 x 6 = 0 in Front (0in x 6 in) in V = 60 x = 0 in Right (in x 6in) 0 in V = x 0 = 0 in Center of a Data Distribution (Mean as fair share) Center of a Data Distribution (Mean as balance point) Variability The balance point (Mean) of, 7, and 8 is 6 One interpretation of the mean is as a fair share. The mean is a measure of center appropriate for data distributions that are approximately symmetric. It is the average of the values in the data set. One interpretation of the mean is as a balance point. The mean is a measure of center appropriate for data distributions that are approximately symmetric. It is the average of the values in the data set. Variability of a data set is the extent to which data values are spread out from each other.
Dot Plot Histogram Box Plot Interquartile Range(IQR) A dot plot is a plot of numerical data along a number line. The five-number summary is as follows: Min = Q = Median = Q = Max = A box plot divides the data in four parts, which each containing about % of the data values. The box section of the box plot shows where the middle 0% of the data values are. The IQR is the difference between the upper quartile and the lower quartile, which is the length of the interval that includes the middle half of the data. IQR = Q - Q = A histogram is a graphical representation of a numerical data set that has been grouped into intervals. The box plot does not show us specific data values. Absolute Deviation Mean Absolute Deviation An absolute deviation is the distance of a data value from the mean (balance point) of the data set. If the mean of the data in the dot plot is 6 degrees, the sum of the distances from the mean for the point to the left of the mean is =. The sum of the distances of the data points to the right of the mean is =. The sum of the absolute deviations is. The MAD is, or ~.7 degrees. The mean absolute deviation (MAD) is computed by finding the mean of the absolute deviations (distances from the mean) for the data set. The value of MAD is the average distance that the data values are from the mean. A small MAD (<) indicates that the data distribution has very little variability. A large MAD (>) indicates that the data points are spread out and that at least some are far away from the mean.
Calculator Fluency 6 th Graders should be using the following calculator functions on a regular basis: basic operations ( +,,, ) Students should also be fluent at using the calculator to: convert fractions to decimals and percents calculate rates and unit rates identifying factors, GCF, and LCM calculate Area and Volume calculate a mean and/ or MAD Calculators should be available to all students whenever working on problem-solving tasks.
