Session 4 Beyond Design (Bouygues) Class Description This class is focused on the use of Revit for construction purposes. You will see how to use Parts and Assemblies features in the construction workflow, and see how to manage things so that it works for real job. You will learn how to use Revit for construction engineering: Phasing, scheduling, work breakdown, shoring definition, precast documentation, in a real project workflow. This course will deal with Parts and Assemblies, and you will learn how to master those features for the benefit of your company.

Julien BENOIT Introduction My goal in this class is to help you to start with those great features that are Parts and Assemblies. I don t want to rephrase the Wikihelp, but provide key points to pay attention to, in order to achieve what you want to do, with efficiency and speed. This document is meant to provide you all the details I won t be able to provide you during the class, and to help you to spread the words to other colleagues in your company. I m aware that Parts is not the most used feature by Revit users, maybe more due to a lack of information about it. I hope this class will help you to change your mind, or at least will guide you to some intelligent use cases in your business. For my construction engineering tasks, I have to use some in-house addins. I will demo the use of them in my class regarding Parts, but obviously won t fully describe them in this handout as you won t be able to exercise yourself with them on your own project. I hope you will understand this statement. Note This document is based on Revit 2014, SP1, and the extensions Model Compare and Model Review. Page 2 of 69

Julien BENOIT Parts and Assemblies overview Parts 1. Making parts from. You will be able to make Parts from: Figure 1: Sample project Walls Floors Slabs Slab edges Roofs Fascias Gutters Ceilings Structural Framing Column Structural column Generic model Foundation Structural slab foundation Bracing Wall by face Floor by face Roof by face And with an extra effort : Mass Windows Doors Cranes Cows 3D Text Etc Page 5 of 69

2. Original to Part A Part is a subcomponent of an original element. It s not a copy, more a new way of looking at a Revit component. Remember Show Part is a view property. Figure 2: View property for Parts As subcomponent, I mean layer on multi layered element, or basic geometry on multi-solid made family. Figure 3: Part-Original side-by-side Page 6 of 69

The properties of the Part are updated as the original is modified, but not reverse: this a key point. Figure 4: Part Original relationship Page 7 of 69

Updated? A Part keeps a relationship with the original. Some parameters are pushed to the Part at the Part creation; some are updated each time the original is modified. See the table below: Parts creation Original modified Parts divided Parts modified Base Level Dimensions Volume Area Length Height Thickness Instance Parameter Design Option Original Category Original Family Original Type Material Construction Creation Phase Demolition Phase Page 8 of 69

3. Divisions Key feature for Parts, they can be divided. Select a Part, Divide command: you enter an Edit mode Figure 5: Divide Part button Figure 6: Edit mode level 1 Fastest choice is to Modify Sketch, it opens a nested Edit mode Figure 7: Edit mode level 2 User has to sketch lines to cut out the Part Don t forget to specify the work plane Page 9 of 69

Sketch lines must reach the blue-dotted limit Figure 8: Valid sketch for division In a division, user can add other Parts just as in Groups. Figure 9: Add Remove option Page 10 of 69

Second choice for division is Selecting Interference. Figure 10: Intersecting References User can select Grids, Levels or reference planes to divide the Part. An offset can be applied, by positive or negative values. Figure 11: Interferences options Page 11 of 69

4. Division options: Gap and Division Profiles User can define a gap along the division lines, the geometry will adjust accordingly. Figure 12: Divisions properties A Division Profile can be use to define a specific shape to the division. Division Profiles are loaded families. Figure 13: Division profile family Page 12 of 69

Options allow tuning division by modifying profile placement or profile behaviour (Edge Match). Figure 14: Division profile settings Figure 15: RTC Division Profile! Page 13 of 69

A part can be divided into 2 or more, and each of those can be divided, etc Figure 16: Edit Part choice In Edit Sketch mode, user has the ability to edit the Parent division, by selecting the Part. Page 14 of 69 Figure 17: Edit Division

A new Edit sketch button is available. Same applies for each Parent division. Figure 18: Editing Nested Division Page 15 of 69

When deleting a Divided Part, it returns to the Parent state of division. Deleting all the divided Parts returns to the first created part. Deleting this last one removes completely the Part from the Project. Figure 19: Deleting a Part-logic scheme Figure 21: Delete Parts warning Figure 20: Delete last Part warning Page 16 of 69

5. Merging Parts This feature is not perfect in most cases, and my advice would be to avoid using it, except if you perfectly know why you are using it. It allows you to merge the geometry of Parts, Parts that share edges or faces, or overlap. Figure 22: Merge Part warning Figure 23: Merge Part cases The major pitfall is that when merging Parts, you loose data: Some geometry s parameters relative to geometry are no longer computed by Revit. Page 17 of 69

6. Schedule Part s schedules provide an access to all Part s parameters (far from being true in other schedules.). Figure 25: Part Schedule Figure 24: Part's schedule fields Wall s Parts has a height! Meaning the maximum height if the top is slopped or profile edited. Figure 26: Wall Part height Page 18 of 69

In 2014, new feature pops up with a Boolean to know if the shape has been edited. In fact to see if Thickness is accurate or not If edited, Thickness may be wrong Figure 27: Shape is edited If a Part is excluded, Excluded is check. (Worth noticing that Shape is modified returns Yes or No, while Excluded is a check ) But when a Part is excluded, it s no longer in the schedule so one can not see it.weird or logic? Page 19 of 69

7. Linked file(s) The ability to create Parts from elements in a linked file is the main feature we use here in my company. It could be understand as Copy Monitor function, with Tops and Flops though. When a modification occurs in the linked file, Parts in the host reflect the change immediately. Question is: how user can track the changes? It s not really straightforward, but it could be done. First case: Element is modified, or added to the project Model Compare extension will do it for you.* Figure 28: Model Compare Extension When opening the project, reload the updated linked file (reload from) Save as a new file version Then open the previous version of the host file. Run Model Compare. *MC is available for Subscription Customers, and is far from perfect, but useful sometime. Page 20 of 69

Figure 29: Model Compare report The report shows the modified Parts, but be aware that it reports the number of ALL the Parts, included Parents Parts when sub division are made. In the picture, you see 2 Parts but MC reports that 3 Parts have been modified, including the non-divided one. It can be identified when looking at parameters. Page 21 of 69

Figure 30: Report for Parts and Parents Second case: element is deleted. This one is easy as we have a reconcile Hosting function that works for Parts in linked file. When reloading the link, this message pops up: Figure 31: Parts monitor alert Warning can be find later in the Warnings area. A small icon is next to Orphaned Parts. Page 22 of 69 Figure 32: Orphan Part icon

You can now go to Collaborate, Reconcile Hosting. Figure 33: Reconcile Hosting You have now a browser for non hosted elements, usually used for Face/Element based components. It works for Parts too! Figure 34: Reconcile Hosting Browser Figure 35: Orphan Part deleted You can see what Part is orphaned, and by Right click you can delete it. Page 23 of 69

Here s the workflow we use today for construction analysis using linked files. First, strict modelling rules have to be followed. All bearing and non bearing elements should be defined. Then user has to take the following steps: a. Link file b. Set View discipline: structural c. Bearing walls remains, make Parts from link d. Part Schedule, sort by material e. User must check a Yes/No Parameter (few lines generally) f. Apply View Template Properties to apply filter BEFORE AFTER Figure 36: Filtering Parts by material Page 24 of 69

8. Parts of loaded families Figure 37: Part of loaded family The main point is you should be aware of is that every solid geometry in the family will be turned into a Part. Voids won t create a Part. 3D text will. Deleting a solid in the family makes disappear the Parts when reloaded in the project. Adding a solid generates a Part of it when reloading. Model lines will never create Parts. Page 25 of 69

Families with imported geometry: A *great* enhancement in Revit 2014 allows you to explode imported stuff in the family environment, and if it s loaded as Generic model, you will be able to make Parts from it. Some families will do the job correctly, some won t. I ve experimented good results with SAT files. (See picture). Figure 38: Parts from imported SAT file Page 26 of 69

9. Phases (Demo) Parts are phase aware like other Revit element. Part inherits the phase of the Original, but as for material, Phases can be override. And this is pretty cool. Figure 39: Parts phasing properties The time logic is consistent, so you can not create a Part before Original has been created, and you can not demo a Part after the Original demo. Figure 40: Parts Phase logic warning Never forget to set phase mapping correctly (don t let Revit do it for you) when you play with phases and Parts from linked files. When dealing with Doors and windows, the filled element created by Revit doesn t create Parts. It s your choice to create Parts from it or not. Page 27 of 69

Figure 41: Sample: detailed phasing with Parts Page 28 of 69

10. Parts and Design Option You are allowed to have Parts in DO, as long as the original is in the appropriate DO. Figure 42: Parts in Design Options Be sure to move the original to the DO prior to hit Make Part button. A little bug occurs when dividing a part in a DO, by sketch: you cannot change the work plane in edit mode. You have to set the correct work plane before editing the division. Don t forget to use the correct Do in your Part schedules!!! Page 29 of 69

11. Parts and IFC It s your choice to export Parts to IFC. The setting is in the export window. Figure 43: IFC OOTB exporter You have to set Show Part in the view before export. Figure 44: Open Source IFC exporter Page 30 of 69

Parts are exported as BuildingElementPart. You get the quantities for each wall layer, including material. Figure 45: Part in IFC file Page 31 of 69

Figure 46: Part's IFC properties Page 32 of 69

12. Parts and Navisworks Again, it s your choice to import Parts into the Navisworks model. But this time it is an Import setting in Navis. When using the exporter from Revit, same choice to make: Parts or not. Figure 47: Navisworks import settings Figure 48: Revit to Navis export settings Page 33 of 69

Figure 49: Part in Navisworks You get the wall from the Revit model, and the Parts associated. Select option in Navis helps you to select the wall or a part of it. Page 34 of 69

13. In-House API for Parts (Demo) Those addins are made to suit the workflow we have developed in my office for construction engineering. Has Part tracking Filter for Parts by Parent category Center of gravity calculation Linked file workflow: push data from original to Parts and reverse Page 35 of 69

14. Addin for sale, using Parts IDAT GmbH provides a suite for Revit dealing with precast concrete elements, s.a. hollow core slabs and solid walls. They provided last year a showcase release of their product, which uses Parts and Assemblies as main features of their workflow. Figure 50: IDAT ribbon and Hollow core tool Videos are here: Slabs Walls Figure 51: IDAT assembly Page 36 of 69

15. Pitfalls Deleting Original deletes Parts.:-) Parts of curved walls don t have a length. Beware of walls junctions depending on the way walls have been modelled, part creation may turn wrong > crossing walls Figure 52: Walls junctions and Parts Page 37 of 69

There s nothing to do with Stairs or ramps or railings.even with IFCs: can t make Parts. There s no easy way to delete all the Parts in a project. Thickness is not computed when Parts are modified by shape handles. Align tool acts on Parts as if Shape Handles were ON, it modifies the geometry. No way to know if an element is Parent or not. Merging tool is useless in most cases due to data loss. Parts material cannot be filtered in schedules; it can be in views, but only by the exact name. Base Level is not transferred for Parts of linked files. Should have the same behaviour than the copy monitor tool asking you to copy levels first for MEP fixture. Page 38 of 69

16. Tips & Tricks Parts from Mass: nest the Mass into a Generic Model-adaptive or Copy paste from project into a Generic Model-adaptive, load back, makes Parts. Only for solid, not for surface Figure 53: Parts from Mass Parts from Doors and windows: change category to Generic Model, reload Page 39 of 69 Figure 54 :Parts from Doors

Parts from wall by face: only with one layer on complex shapes. Use roof instead for multi-layered result (not granted though) Figure 55: Parts from Wall/Roof by face Divide a part in sketch mode: use a Detail Component to drive the division line outside the edit mode: use the select line tools with the lock option enable. Figure 56: Detail component Page 40 of 69

Parts have faces than can host Face Based families Adaptive Component can produce Parts. Figure 57: Parts from Adaptive Component Curtain walls and Fabricated Stairs can produce Parts (see Hacks) 3D text can have Parts when nested in a Parts-doing category family Figure 58: 3D text Part Page 41 of 69

What is a Part of a cow? A steak? Figure 59: Tribute to Marcello Page 42 of 69

17. Hacks. Parts from Curtain Wall: export to IFC, import back as Wall Parts from Assembled Stairs: export as BuildingElementProxy in IFC, then import as Generic Model Page 43 of 69

Assemblies 1. Be careful, these are not groups Figure 60: Assembly from Wikihelp An assembly is a set of elements, created to be documented in the project with specific views and schedules. The set is turned into a new element that has classic properties, type and instance. Some parameters values must be consistent to allow assembly creation. Page 44 of 69

2. Playing with Assemblies Mirroring Assembly will create a new one, seems logic to me. Mirroring twice will take you back to the start! See pitfall for walls Figure 61: Mirroring Assemblies Selecting two sets of identical elements will create a single Assembly. Revit will recognize similar geometry and warns you an already existing assembly will be placed. Page 45 of 69 Figure 62: Identity match

Beware of the joining conditions: an Assembly created included joined elements will not duplicate correctly as the joins conditions will change, a new Assembly will be created. User warning: A change made to an assembly will NOT populate to other instances. It will create a new type of assembly. Assemblies can contain many elements. This sample contains 1277 units. Figure 63: Large Assembly sample We often use Assemblies that only contain a single element, mainly for documentation purpose on construction tools. Page 46 of 69

3. Assemblies and phases All elements in an Assembly must have the same Phases settings. Consequently, Assemblies have the ability to propagate the phase parameters to components of the assembly. That way you can change the phase settings for a bunch of elements. You can t modify Phase of an element from an Assembly; Phase settings are greyed out in properties palette. The behaviour of Assemblies regarding Phasing is similar to others Revit element. 4. Modifying Assemblies You can modify an assembly outside the Edit mode, by using TAB to select an element. In Edit mode, you have the ability to add Revit element, s.a. reinforcement or loaded families. If you change a parameter on an instance, and if other instances are already in the project, a new Assembly type will be created. Parameters (shared and project) can be assigned to Assemblies, as Type or Instance. Element of an Assembly get new instance values: Assembly Name, Assembly code, Assembly description; all available in category schedules. Assemblies and groups. Assemblies can t be part of a Group, but elements of the Assembly can be. Page 47 of 69

5. Parts in assembly? Yes, of course. But do it carefully, especially if the original is not part of the assembly. Without the original inside assembly: Each time the original gets modified, Parts in the assembly are updated. Multilayered elements: Page 48 of 69

Figure 64: Part in Assembly With the original inside assembly: Parts are propagated in every instances of the assembly. Page 49 of 69

6. Assemblies and families Families in assembly can be tricky. Nested component are not included if they are shared. See picture below. Figure 65: Assembly and Nested families As nested components are already in the project (family browser), this is certainly what causes this issue. Call it a bug. Solution is simple: edit assembly, and add the shared component. Page 50 of 69

Figure 66: Nested not in Assembly Figure 67: Assembly fixed Page 51 of 69

7. Documentation View creation: what about applying a View Template? It s available for Assembly s views. Tip: Assembly s views are created from default views in Revit: 3D views > default OOTB 3D view Plan, section, elevation view > Detail view Assign a view template in types of those so that they will be applied when creating Assembly s views. Figure 68: View type setting My advice would be to keep those OOTB view types in your template for this use. You can create multiple sheets for each Assembly, by creating views and selecting sheet. All assembly views can go to a standard sheet, and all views from the project can go to an assembly sheet. Page 52 of 69

8. Schedules Assembly s schedules have a specific property: You have the choice to schedule sub elements by Assembly instance or Assembly Type. If you make 2 Part list schedules for one Assembly, you will have both. Figure 69: Assembly schedule option Page 53 of 69

9. Pitfalls Align tool: align object, not Assembly.so it creates a new Assembly if an element of the Assembly is aligned. Silly warnings: not always true, you get a warning when a new instance is created, without reason. Just as Groups: Make Assembly with element that host windows or doors. No Assembly allowed in Design Option. Mirroring assembly that contains walls is allowed, like groups. But it should not pretty inconsistent. Assembly can not be use in a displacement set, use TAB instead. Page 54 of 69

10. Tips & Tricks Assembly Name sequence: modify it at first creation, Revit will keep the scheme for the next one (of the same category), but will forget some Zero You can also rename the first assembly; the next one will remember the name sequence. Deleting an Assembly deletes.all the elements, with a warning though Hosted elements: with the host in the assembly Edit mode: change background colour for a best contrast Figure 70: Edit mode background Page 55 of 69

Parts and Assemblies in my job 1. Quantity Take Off (demo) QTO is a milestone is our BIM adoption in my company. We ve done a lot of tries and errors before getting a good result in accurate and highly detailed QTO. The project you will see here is a residential program still in development, construction on site is planed to start in the early days of This is the first project with QTO coming from the model, with check points from Cost Estimator. Figure 71: Project Showcase: Nantes - Croix-Rouge Page 56 of 69

2. Phasing (demo) Using Phases in Revit was my first real professional use of Revit. As construction engineers, we, my colleagues and I, have to deal every day with sequence and work breakdown. The reason for this is that Bouygues commitment on delays and on-time delivery is one of the most important with cost balance of course. So from the start of the company, specific engineer were involved in detailing work sequences to explain to site foreman and team leaders the phasing and pouring sequences in a way that will warranty on-time delivery. In this project, phasing was here to explain with images the backbone of our proposed schedule. I was responsible for scheduling and phasing on this offer. We were lucky enough to get the contract signed, construction is now live with Core done at 95%. Right on time, of course. Figure 72: Project Showcase: Brest - G3SE Page 57 of 69

3. Work breakdown(demo) Construction engineers are also called Method Statement engineers. One of the very first tasks they have to deal with is work breakdown, meaning the day by day sequence of concrete pouring for all cast-inplace elements, s.a. walls, slabs, columns, beams. This is made to ensure that time schedule will be respected, and also to order the correct quantity of formworks and associated means, like security platforms. Parts are used here for pouring sequences, Assemblies for equipment documentation. (Project Showcase: Rennes - Symeval + Nantes - Quadrile) Figure 73: Project Showcase: Rennes - Symeval Page 58 of 69

Figure 74: Project Showcase: Nantes Quadrile Page 59 of 69

4. Precast concrete elements(demo) In my office, we have sometime to define and document precast concrete elements. Most of the time, our role is to give key information to the Structural engineers, s.a. lifting anchors placement or type, time lapse between pouring and lifting, specific shapes needed for scaffolding and shoring, etc At this time, we never define the reinforcement for those elements, mainly because we don t have too. One must admit that Revit is not fully ready for that yet, at least according to French standards. This project contains various precast elements, and some of them were documented using Parts and Assemblies, with some help from in-house addins. Rebars are modelled to act as collision reminder for workers. Figure 75: Precast sample Page 60 of 69

5. Special projects (demo) This project is the dismantlement of a nuclear plant building. We had to make studies on lifting anchors for each type of block, to get approval from the client before. We had to take into account that some elements were poured with high density concrete (3.5 against 2.4 for classic concrete), and that slabs and walls had many holes and ducts path inside. We decided to use Parts and Assemblies to achieve these tasks. The project started with Revit 2012 (first release with Parts). And after a few weeks was achieved with This building is divided into more than 1600 blocks (Parts), and we designed more than Assembly 80 types for lifting anchors definition. For your information, it was the first project ever on Revit for our drafter. (Project Showcase: Cherbourg - RM2) Figure 76: RM2 Parts Page 61 of 69

Figure 77: RM2 floors Page 62 of 69

Other construction stuff you may like 1. Construction equipment and hardware: specific families Method statements deal with a lot of specific equipment for formworks, scaffolding, shoring, etc You will see some of the families we use all day long to make the job done on site. Figure 78: Hardware! Page 63 of 69

2. 4D simulation with Navisworks and MS Project We use this workflow on specific projects, where phasing is a key point on construction site. We use 4D on large scale planning (more than a year), and also on very specific situation on construction site. Figure 79: 4D phasing Figure 80: Detailed 4D phasing Page 64 of 69

3. Site plan Another important part of my previous job, site plan is defined in the early days of the projects, even for the commercial proposal, as Cost estimators take this into account. It s still under development in my office, as we have to face a lack of content when it comes to play with tower cranes. Solution is on his way, and should be ready by the end of You will see examples provided to client for commercial proposal. Figure 81: Project Showcase: Nantes-Lycée Ile Beaulieu Page 65 of 69

Conclusion I hope this class will convince you to give a try to those features that are Assemblies and Parts. I m aware of their current limitations, but I m pretty sure Autodesk will continue a (slow) development on it, based on user s feedback. Tell me I m not dreaming (fingers crossed...). My point here is that for construction we NEED a way to break things down in a model. It s a must have. More, breaking things into Parts should increase the detail level of the model, by adding some extra component needed on the construction site. Some Autodesk competitors are working on things like that. I will add that we need to break things inside Revit, and not in Navisworks or Synchro, because we need documentation out of this stuff. The pre-part answer was to model walls as separate layers, with in fact 3 or more walls instead of one. This works but this is not really smart technically speaking. I would rather consider this as a workaround taking into account Revit limitations at this time. It is also an answer that goes well with separate models for each trade s.a. Architectural model plus Structural model. Here in France, we have a real need for multilayered walls and floors, mainly for thermal and energy analysis. Multi-walls answer is a dead-end for us, forcing engineers to rebuilt models for thermal simulation and estimation. I believe a single model for walls and floors is possible in a near future, and there Parts could be a key point for collaboration. Let s see what happen. With some extra enhancements, Parts would be a competitive killer for Autodesk. Page 66 of 69
