1 Ordered Pairs Teacher Notes Objective Identif and graph ordered pairs on a coordinate grid. Use these worksheets if students have trouble graphing on the coordinate plane graphing proportional relationships Vocabular coordinate grid ordered pair origin -ais -ais Getting Started Project a coordinate grid on the board. Point out the - and -aes. Plot a point. What is the ordered pair? Practice plotting points. Where is (0, 0)? This is the origin. Lesson Information Remind students that ordered pairs list coordinates. The coordinates, when taken together, represent a point on the coordinate grid. Math Challenge Partner Pictures Give each student a coordinate grid. Tell students to draw a simple shape on their grid and plot the points. Then have them write ordered pairs on paper and give the ordered pairs to their partner. Their partners will use the ordered pairs to recreate the shape on a blank coordinate grid. Differentiated Instruction Visual Learners Draw or distribute a coordinate graph. Have students plot the following points: (, ), and (, -). Have students connect the points. Ask students to name the two ordered pairs on the graph. Now have students plot (, ) and connect the points. What shape is formed? triangle Kinesthetic Learners Students can measure the classroom and make a coordinate grid using masking tape. Students can work in small groups to make a map of the classroom b plotting points for the locations of objects in the classroom.

2 Assess Step Project a coordinate grid on the board. Ask students to guide ou to graph several points such as, (, 7), (, ), and ( 8, ). Then ask them to name the ordered pairs of other points that ou plot. Step Write five points on the board that include at least one point in each quadrant. Tell students to graph these points. Have students share their work and discuss their strategies. Step Tell students to draw a coordinate grid on paper. Ask them to plot an two points of their choosing, making certain to label the points. Tell them to write their method for naming the points.

3 Lesson - NAME Vocabular and English Language Development DATE Activate Prior Knowledge Use a coordinate grid to locate and label points. The cit of Philadelphia was laid out in a grid pattern b William Penn and Thomas Holmes. Use a coordinate grid to find locations. Locate and mark the origin. Label it Cit Hall. Give its coordinates O Chapter Move east 9 blocks from Cit Hall. Mark the point and label it Libert Bell. Give its coordinates. Move south block from Libert Bell. Mark the point and label it Independence Hall. Give its coordinates. Move east blocks and north blocks from Independence Hall. Mark the point and label it Bets Ross House. Give its coordinates. Move west blocks from Bets Ross House. Mark the point and label it U.S. Mint. Give its coordinates. Copright Glencoe/McGraw-Hill, a division of The McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc. Definition Review Match the vocabular word to its location on the graph. 6 origin 8 -ais 0 coordinate grid Application 7 -ais 9 ordered pair Follow the directions to demonstrate plotting a point. Work as a class. Clear an area on a tile floor. Use tape to mark the - and -aes, and, if needed, to mark the grid lines. An auditorium, a gm, or an outdoor paved area could also be used. The teacher writes ordered pairs on the board. One at a time, students start at the origin and walk along the grid to the location of a specified ordered pair. Repeat until all students have graphed a point. B E D A (, 6) C Math Triumphs Lesson - A
