3 Introduction Welcome to the release notes for the Trimble GPScorrect extension for the ESRI ArcPad software. Please read these release notes carefully. When you install version 3.10 of the GPScorrect extension, you must choose the language that the Installation Wizard and the Activation Wizard use to install and activate the software. Before running version 3.10 of the GPScorrect extension, it must be activated using the Activation Wizard. To run version 3.10 of the GPScorrect extension in a language other than English, you must first download and install the appropriate language files, if available, from the Trimble website. Similarly, to run the GPScorrect Help in a language other than English, you must download and install the appropriate Help files, if available, from the Trimble website. The GPScorrect extension connects the ESRI ArcPad software to a Trimble GPS Pathfinder receiver or GeoExplorer series handheld. It extends the existing GPS functionality in the ArcPad software with advanced configuration options, detailed status information, and mission planning. Using the GPScorrect extension, you can improve position accuracy in ArcPad AXF or Shapefiles. As you collect features, the GPScorrect extension logs position data to a Trimble SSF file. The SSF file can be differentially corrected in Trimble postprocessing software (the GPS Pathfinder Office software or the Trimble GPS Analyst extension for the ESRI ArcGIS Desktop software), then used to adjust the positions in the corresponding Shapefiles. The GPScorrect extension lets you use real-time differential corrections from any source supported by the Trimble GPS receiver. With these files you can postprocess all positions, even positions that were corrected in real time, or positions that were collected using a different satellite constellation than that visible from the base station. 4 New features and changes Version 3.10 of the GPScorrect extension for ESRI ArcPad software includes the following new features: Support for the new GNSS processing engine introduced in version 4.20 of the GPS Pathfinder Office software and version 2.20 of the GPS Analyst extension for ESRI ArcGIS Desktop software. Data processed through this new engine shows considerable accuracy improvement. In particular, H-Star receivers achieve decimeter (10 cm / 4 inch) accuracy in more places than ever before, GeoXT and ProXT receivers achieve second-by-second accuracy of 50 cm, and the Juno series handhelds (Juno SB handhelds and Juno SC handhelds) achieve 1-3 meter accuracy. Users with other receiver types will typically also see increased accuracy as well as increased position yield with the new office and field software. Support for the Microsoft Windows 7 operating system. Ability to log DeltaPhase data for optimal postprocessed code accuracy. Logging of GLONASS data for subsequent postprocessing when using a GPS Pathfinder ProXRT receiver (with the GLONASS option installed). Support for the new Trimble Tornado and Tempest antennas. A bug causing the offset units not to be transferred from the ArcPad software to the GPScorrect extension has been corrected. IMPORTANT: GPScorrect extension version 3.10 is the last major release to support Microsoft Pocket PC 2003 devices. New default GPS settings Traditionally, GPS data collection software has used fixed masks to determine which GPS satellite signals to use, and which to ignore. Commonly used masks include a minimum satellite elevation level, a minimum SNR value, or a maximum PDOP. While using fixed masks can ensure that most bad GPS signals are rejected, they also cause a number of perfectly usable signals to be discarded at the same time. 4 Trimble GPScorrect Extension Release Notes

5 The new Trimble postprocessing engine consistently achieves better results when it has more GPS measurements to work with, including signals from satellites which may be weaker or lower on the horizon. Fortunately, the new engine is also capable of making far better decisions about which GPS signals to use and which to discard. For this reason, the default GPS settings have been changed in this version of the GPScorrect extension, with the GPS slider now set to Productivity, as illustrated: For best postprocessing results, Trimble recommends that you use the new default values illustrated. Doing so has two clear benefits: Postprocessed accuracy will be optimal, due to the new postprocessing engine s ability to select and use the best GPS satellite measurements. Position yield potential will be significantly increased. If you work in an open environment, you may see little difference in yield. But if your operating environment includes tall buildings, trees, or other obstacles then the new Productivity settings will increase your position yield considerably. As a rule of thumb, yield in a suburban environment can increase by 20% on average; in a forested environment, yield may increase by 40% or more. Tip If you are not planning to postprocess your GPS data, or if your organization has policies which require you to collect GPS data with one or more fixed mask values, you can still move the GPS slider to the right, or specify a particular set of mask values. Using GPS slider settings other than the new defaults may reduce both position yield and overall accuracy. Product information This section provides general information about using the GPScorrect extension. Software compatibility Version 3.10 of the Trimble GPScorrect extension can be used with ESRI ArcPad software version 7.1 and later. 6 GPScorrect extension documentation The Trimble GPScorrect Extension Getting Started Guide is provided on the Trimble GPScorrect Extension CD. To view the manual, select the appropriate link from the main menu of the Trimble GPScorrect Extension CD. Known issues This section provides information about known issues with the Trimble GPScorrect extension. Installation On some devices powered by the Microsoft Windows Mobile software, the message Adding information for Remove Programs may remain on the screen for several minutes at the end of the installation process. While this message is displayed, do not cancel the installation or reset the device. If the GPScorrect extension does not install correctly on the device, delete the ArcPadPrefs.apx file from \My Documents\My ArcPad. Removing the file deletes any custom ArcPad software settings. To install the Trimble GPScorrect extension you must first install the ESRI ArcPad software. To install or uninstall the GPScorrect extension from a desktop computer, ArcPad 7.1 must already be installed on the computer. To uninstall both products, you must first uninstall the GPScorrect extension and then uninstall the ArcPad software. GPS After you reset the GPS receiver, you may need to disconnect and reconnect the receiver to collect an almanac. 6 Trimble GPScorrect Extension Release Notes

7 Communications For receivers that support RTCM, the GPScorrect extension can forward RTCM corrections from a serial port on the field computer to the GPS receiver. However, it cannot forward CMR messages from a serial port to the receiver. If you accidentally select an infrared port on the field computer for connection to a GPS receiver, the Trimble GPScorrect extension may stop responding. If you are using a GPS Pathfinder ProXRT receiver with a cabled external realtime source such as a GeoBeacon receiver, and you change the real-time setting in the GPScorrect extension to Use Uncorrected GPS, the ProXRT receiver continues to use the real-time corrections to generate positions. To stop using corrections from a cabled external real-time source, in the GPScorrect extension select Use Uncorrected GPS, and then disconnect the cable from the ProXRT receiver. Data collection Not all data can be postprocessed if more than one type of GPS receiver was used to collect the data. If you want to change the receiver you are using, close the current data file. After connecting the new receiver, start a new data file and continue collecting data. Suspending a Windows Mobile powered device Before you suspend a Windows Mobile powered device running the Trimble GPScorrect extension, you must: close all data files disconnect from the GPS receiver C CAUTION Failure to close all data files or to disconnect from the GPS receiver may result in corrupted data. 8 VRS networks Positions collected using a receiver without H-Star technology that have been corrected in real time using a VRS network may be less accurate after postprocessing using the Trimble GPS Analyst extension for the ESRI ArcGIS Desktop software or the GPS Pathfinder Office software. This is because the Differential Correction wizard uses a single base station, which is usually farther from the rover than the VRS system. Data that has been corrected in real time using corrections from a VRS system may not require postprocessing: care must be taken, as the GPS positions recorded in the SSF file are recorded in the reference datum of the correction source. The AT command set is a standard language for communicating with modems. To establish a dial-up connection with a network or system provider using some cellphones (such as some Nokia models), you may need to send AT commands from the field computer to put the cellphone into ISDN mode. The Windows Mobile operating system cannot send these commands. To configure the cellphone, connect it to a computer that is running a desktop Windows operating system. Some cellphones do not disconnect the dial-up connection to a server when the Trimble GPScorrect extension sends a disconnect command. To ensure that a dial-up connection is ended, disconnect from the VRS network in the Trimble GPScorrect extension and then end the call on the cellphone as well. OmniSTAR expiry date When connected to a GPS Pathfinder ProXRT receiver, the OmniSTAR service expiry date may not display correctly after updating a subscription. This may occur after renewing a subscription, or activating an additional subscription ( for example, enabling VBS on a receiver that already has an HP subscription). The correct expiry date should appear in the GPScorrect Extension if you disconnect and reconnect to the receiver, or change the real-time settings in the GPScorrect extension to "Use Uncorrected GPS" and then reconfigure the receiver to use OmniSTAR corrections. 8 Trimble GPScorrect Extension Release Notes

9 GeoExplorer series handheld When using a GeoExplorer series handheld as an external GPS receiver, with a cabled connection from your field computer to the serial clip on the GeoExplorer series handheld, the only baud rate that is supported is To set this up correctly: Use the GPS Connector software on the GeoExplorer series handheld to set the COM1 baud rate to (or TSIP High Speed on a GeoExplorer 2005 or 2008 series handheld). Use the COM port configuration control on your field computer to set the baud rate on its COM port to Known issues with the ArcPad software Some problems in the ArcPad software affect operation of the Trimble GPScorrect extension. Known issues with the ArcPad software version 7.1 and later The following issues affect data collection with the Trimble GPScorrect extension. Logging reference points before applying an offset If you are using a laser rangefinder to collect offsets, you can start a new feature or vertex by firing the laser rangefinder. However, when you do this, ArcPad does not always require you to log a new GPS reference point. If a previous reference point is defined, this will be re-used. Unless you are logging a radial traverse, the previous reference point is almost certainly incorrect. If you attempt to log an offset or linear traverse from an old reference point, the Trimble GPScorrect extension will display an error message warning you to log a new reference point before recording the offset. Nesting points with a laser rangefinder If you use a laser rangefinder to log a nested offset point feature while you are logging a polyline or polygon feature, the line feature is deleted. 10 Segmenting with simple offsets applied If you apply a simple perpendicular offset to a segmented line feature, the new line feature has a double offset applied to it: the offset from the first segment, plus its own offset. Trimble recommends that you do not use segmenting and simple offsets together. Logging multiple linear traverses If you log more than one linear traverse, ArcPad does not notify the Trimble GPScorrect extension of the location of the second and subsequent traverses, so they are not logged in the GPScorrect SSF file. You will be unable to differentially correct the features that contain the second and subsequent traverses. To avoid this issue, exit and restart ArcPad each time you have logged a linear traverse. Updating GPS from the Geography tab If you open the Properties dialog for the current feature, select the Geography tab and then tap the GPS icon to update the geometry, ArcPad does not notify the Trimble GPScorrect extension of the updated feature geometry unless you have enabled averaging. You will be unable to differentially correct the feature. To ensure that the updated geometry is logged by the Trimble GPScorrect extension, log averaged point features. To enable point averaging, go to the Capture tab in the GPS Preferences dialog in ArcPad. Appending GPS vertices If you append a GPS vertex to a polyline feature, ArcPad does not notify the Trimble GPScorrect extension of the appended geometry. You will be unable to differentially correct the appended vertex. Logging offset points by tapping on the map If you log an offset point feature by tapping on the map rather than by tapping the Capture Point button, ArcPad does not notify the Trimble GPScorrect extension of the location of the feature, so it is not logged in the GPScorrect SSF file. You will be unable to differentially correct the point feature. 10 Trimble GPScorrect Extension Release Notes

11 Second vertex in simple offsets is incorrect When logging a feature with a simple perpendicular offset, the location of the second vertex in the feature may be unexpected. The error in the location of the second vertex increases if the offset value is much larger than the distance between vertices. This issue affects features collected with GPS and those created by digitizing. This effect is caused by the ArcPad offset algorithm. As this algorithm is reproduced in the Trimble postprocessing software, the same effect is visible after postprocessing. Simple offsets If you log a polyline or polygon feature with a mixture of GPS and manual positions, and apply a simple perpendicular (left/right) offset to the feature, the feature geometry after differential correction may be very slightly different from that expected. A lack of data from ArcPad about the manual positions prevents the postprocessing software from accurately recalculating the offset location for each vertex. Multiple copies of GPScorrect tool If you have manually defined the Applets path in the Options dialog in ArcPad, and you have the Trimble GPScorrect toolbar enabled, the toolbar may contain two copies of the GPScorrect tool. This does not affect operation of ArcPad or the Trimble GPScorrect extension. You can use either tool to launch the Trimble GPScorrect extension. Performance on mobile devices equipped with VGA resolution screens ESRI have issued a patch to enable ArcPad 7 and later to better utilise the increased display resolution of a VGA screen. 12 Technical assistance If you have problems using the Trimble GPScorrect extension, refer to the Trimble GPScorrect Extension Getting Started Guide. If you cannot find a solution in the Trimble GPScorrect Extension Getting Started Guide, try restarting ArcPad. Close any open data files, and then exit the software. Then start ArcPad again and resume working. If you cannot restart the software, or if restarting the software does not solve the problem, try resetting or restarting the field computer.
