4 Executive summary Dell OpenManage Essentials (OME) is designed and implemented to replace the legacy Dell IT Assistant product. It provides easy migration from your existing Dell IT Assistant (ITA) instance to OpenManage Essentials in the following two scenarios. Same-box migration: Lets you upgrade from your existing Dell IT Assistant instance with its user settings to OpenManage Essentials as part of the OpenManage Essentials installation on the same system. The previously existing Dell IT Assistant installation is not available following the upgrade. Off-box migration: Lets you set up a different OpenManage Essentials instance on a different system, and then moves user settings and data from the existing Dell IT Assistant to the new OpenManage Essentials. The existing Dell IT Assistant installation continues to work during the migration process until the new OpenManage Essentials is installed and tested in the production environment. This whitepaper guides you through these two migration scenarios. Introduction OpenManage Essentials is a hardware management application that provides a comprehensive view of Dell systems, devices, and components in the enterprise s network. OpenManage Essentials is a Webbased and one-to-many systems management application. Using OpenManage Essentials, you can discover and inventory Dell systems and other devices and components, monitor system health, and perform system updates. Off-box migration from Dell IT Assistant to OpenManage Essentials To perform an off-box migration from Dell IT Assistant to OpenManage Essentials: 1. Back up your existing Dell IT Assistant database (see Backing up your Dell IT Assistant database, below). 2. Copy the backup database to the system on which you plan to install OpenManage Essentials. 3. Restore your database (see Restoring your Dell IT Assistant database, below). 4. Make sure that the restored database is named ITAssist. 5. Install OpenManage Essentials. Backing up your Dell IT Assistant database 1. Log in to Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio either as server administrator, or as a user with sysadmin rights. 2. Right-click your ITAssist database. 4

Successful backup message The default location of the database backup file is: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Backup\ Restoring your Dell IT Assistant database 1. Log in to Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio either as server administrator, or as a user with sysadmin rights. 2. Right-click on the Databases database, then select Restore Database. 8

Migration from Dell IT Assistant to OpenManage Essentials Most of the Dell IT Assistant data will be migrated except for update packages and ITA tasks. OpenManage Essentials has new functionality related to Out of Band inventory and updates for Dell PowerEdge 11 th and 12 th generation servers. Due to this new functionality, the existing update packages and ITA tasks will not be migrated to OME. 16

In previous versions of OpenManage Essentials, a server and RAC device (IDRAC5, IDRAC6 and IDRAC7) discovered and inventoried together showing up as separate devices in the Device tree. In OME1.1 there is no distinction between servers and their RAC. If both server and RAC are discovered together they show up in both the places in the Device Tree with the same name and information. Newly discovered Chassis Management Controller (CMC) devices show up under the Modular Server group and the RAC group in the Device Tree. The discovery and inventory data found in either location is identical. Following tasks will not migrate from Dell IT Assistant to OpenManage Essentials: Server Software Update Client Software Update IPMI Command Line Power Control Device (via ASF) Performance Management Import Dell Catalog Server Administrator Deployment for Windows Server Administrator Deployment for Linux Applaunch Alert Action Alert Action Trap Forwarding Alert Action 19

20 Figure 17. Overview of steps you must complete. To take advantage of new features, perform discovery and inventory for all discovery ranges after the migration\upgrade. 21 To perform discovery for all existing ranges: 1. Multi-select all ranges from All Ranges then right click and select Perform Discovery and Inventory Now. 2. Under the Discovery Range Summary, select all ranges. Then right click Perform Discovery and Inventory Now. Figure 19. Verify User Queries. The upgrade process handles most of this migration, but there are certain cases that are not migrated if the RAC device name was used as part of the query.
