Configuring Switch 1. Select the switch tab and then add a switch from the list of switches we have to the workspace, we will choose ( ) switch. 2. Add a number of PCs next to the switch in order to design a network, go to the End Devices tab and then add 4 generic PCs. 3. Now we have one switch and 4 PCs, we must connect the PCs to the switch using Straight-Through cable, Go to the Connections tab then choose the Straight-Through. After choosing the connection go to the first PC and Click on it, a list of available ports will appears, choose the Fast Ethernet port. 4. Next it is required to choose the other end of the connection (the switch), click on it. It will show the available ports on the switch which is 24 Fast Ethernet ports select one of the ports. We should see a green light on the both end of the cable to ensure the connectivity. 5. Repeat the previous step for the remaining PCs. 6. The next step is to configure the PCs and to assign an IP to each PC, in order to have all the PCs on the same network. To configure the PC we just click on it and it will open the configuration window. 7. On the top we have three tabs (Physical, Config, Desktop), to assign an IP to the PC select the Desktop tab. 1
8. Then we will select the first icon which is the (IP Configuration) icon, and the IP Configuration windows will show up. 9. Assign an IP Address and a Subnet Mask to this PC, choose ( ) as the IP Address and ( ) as the Subnet Mask. 10. Repeat the previous step for the remaining PCs, But the IP Address should be on the same network, you can choose ( ), ( ), and ( ) for the remaining PCs. 11. Now the network is ready to be used, we will send a message from a PC to another PC, to see the process step by step we will enter the Simulation Mode on the lower right corner. 12. To send a message, select the message icon on the right from the list of icons. 13. First of all select the Source PC (PC0) and after selecting the Source select the Destination PC (PC2), we should see a screen like the one below. 2
14. To start our process we will click on the (Capture / Forward) button and it will run the process only one step at a time, as a result the message will be sent to the switch. 15. By Clicking the (Capture / Forward) button the switch as a first action will act like a hub and it will broadcast the message to all PCs, but the next time we send a message the switch will forward the message only to the destination PC. 16. The message will be received by the Destination PC (PC2) and will be removed by other PCs. 3
Configuring Hub For the hub we will use the same steps as switch, instead of selecting switch we will select Generic Hub. The difference between switch and hub is that the hub always broadcast the packets to all other Nodes in the network except the source node Configuring a Router 1. Add a Router of the type (1841) to the workspace 2. Then add two Switches of the type ( ) to the workspace 3. Each switch represents a different network or segment, add 3 PCs to each switch. 4. To connect these PCs to each switch we will use straight-through cable from the PC we will select Fast Ethernet port and for the switch we will also select one of the available Fast Ethernet ports. We will repeat this step for each PC as a result we will have a connection like the below one. 5. Now is the time to connect the Switches to the Router, so we will start with the left switch, we will use straight-through cable for the switch we will select one of the available Fast Ethernet ports. 6. After choosing the appropriate port on the switch it s the time to connect the cable to the router, from the router select the Fast-Ethernet 0/0 port. It s important to know which port you have selected on the router, in our case we chose Fast-Ethernet 0/0 for the left Switch. 7. For the right switch we will repeat the same steps, the only difference is that we will choose Fast-Ethernet 0/1 on the Router. 4
8. After connecting the Switches with the Router, we notice that the connection indicator light on the both side of the Router is Red which means that there is no connection, the reason is that we need to program the Fastethernet ports on the Router, to program the Router add a PC next to the Router. 9. To connect the PC we will use to program the Router we will use a specific type of cable called Rollover Cable (Console Cable), from the connection tab select Console cable 10. Now we will connect the Console cable to the PC and we will select (RS 232) port. 11. Now select the appropriate port on the Router which is the Console Port. 12. After connecting the PC with the Router we will click on the PC it will open for us the Configuration window then we will select the Desktop tab. 13. No we will click on Terminal Icon. 5
14. After clicking on the Terminal Icon, the Terminal Configuration window will show-up, don t change anything just click on OK. After clicking on OK the terminal window will be opened, the terminal will ask us whether we need help in programming we will write NO and the Enter. 15. Within the terminal we have three modes: (User mode (>), Privileged mode (#), Global Configuration mode ((config)#), when we first enter the terminal we are by default in the User mode. To move from the user mode to Privileged mode write (enable) and the Enter 16. After entering the Privileged mode we need to go to the Global Configuration mode, to do that write (Configure terminal) and then Enter. 17. Within the Global Configuration mode we can do most of the programming, for example to change the name of the Router we will use this command (Hostname Router-Name), to change the Router name to UoD Write (Hostname UoD) and the Enter. 18. Another example is to add a password when we move from User mode to Privileged mode, to add this password use this command (Enable Secret password), so if you want to change the privileged mode password to cisco write (enable secret cisco) and the click enter. 19. If you want to change the password of the whole Router (Console Password) to class we can use the following commands: Line console 0 Password class Login 20. Right now we are in a sub-mode of the Global Configuration mode if we want to get back to the Global configuration mode write the (Exit) command which will bring us back one-step. 6
21. Now the most important thing is to program Fastethernet 0/0 and Fastethernet 0/1 ports and bring them UP so we can have connections with the Switches.to assign an IP to each port and bring them UP Use the Following commands: To Enter the Fastethernet 0/0 port write: Interface Fastethernet 0/0 and then Click Enter Now we just opened the 0/0 port to assign an IP to this Port write: IP Address [IP] [Subnet-mask] IP Address After assigning an IP to the Port the Last step is to bring the Port UP: No Shutdown After finishing the previous Steps we need to get back to the Global Configuration mode, just Write Exit and Enter. 22. After activating the Fastethernet 0/0 Port we will notice the green light of the left Port of the Router. 23. Repeat the same steps for the Fastethernet 0/1 but Use a different IP from the Fastethernet 0/0, I will use IP for Fastethernet 0/ After applying the same steps we will notice a green light on the right side of the Router (Fastethernet 0/1). 7
25. Some other important instructions we can use in the terminal are: Copy running-config startup-config (To save settings) *Privileged mode instruction Show running-config (Show changes you have made) *Privileged mode instruction 26. assign IPs to the PC so I will start with the PCs on the left side which are near to the Fastethernet 0/0 port PC0: Click on PC0 then go to Desktop tab then click IP Configuration Icon. I will choose an IP on the same range as Fastethernet 0/0 IP which is ( ). IP Address: Subnet Mask: Default Gateway: We chose as Default Gateway because the nearest Port on the Router to PC0 is Fastethernet 0/0 and its IP is For PC1: IP Address: Subnet Mask: Default Gateway: For PC2: 8
IP Address: Subnet Mask: Default Gateway: Now by the same way, I will assign IPs to the PCs on the right side which are near to the Fastethernet 0/1 port, click on PC3. I will choose an IP on the same range as Fastethernet 0/1 IP which is ( ). IP Address: Subnet Mask: Default Gateway: We chose as Default Gateway because the nearest Port on the Router to PC3 is Fastethernet 0/1 and it s IP is For PC1: IP Address: Subnet Mask: Default Gateway: For PC2: IP Address: Subnet Mask: Default Gateway: Testing: To test the connection we can use the Ping instruction or we can send a message from a PC on the left to another PC on the right. Configure a Wireless Router 1. Add a Wireless Router of the type Linksys WRT300N to workspace from Wireless Devices. 2. Add three laptops to workspace. 3. To configure the Wireless Router add another laptop next to the Linksys router and connect them using a straight-through cable from laptop select Fastethernet and from the Linksys router select Ethernet. 9
4. The default IP address of the Linksys router is ( ) so we must put the connected laptop to the router on the same network. To do this click on the Laptop and then go to the Desktop tab and then select IP Configuration Icon and enter the following IP and Subnet Mask. IP Address: Subnet Mask: To access the router go to Web Browser on the Laptop. 6. Enter the IP address of the Linksys Router as URL which is ( ). 7. Click on Go, an authorization message will show up asking you for User Name and Password, the default User Name is (admin), and the default Password is (admin), then click on OK. 8. After Clicking on OK, the router configuration page will open; in this page we can configure the router like changing the LAN and WAN Address, Changing the Password or Network Name, and many other settings. 10
9. Let s change some of the setting, scroll down to the bottom of the page and change the Maximum number of Users to 100 instead of 50, and then Click on save settings. 10. To change the Wireless broadcasting name (SSID), go to wireless tab on the top of the page and click on it, the following page will open. 11. The Network Name (SSID) is Default change the name to UoD and then Click on save settings. 11
12. TO change the wireless Password click on the sub-tab Wireless Security and then from the Drop Down list select WEP, then enter the this Password to KEY1 Textbox ( ). Then Click on Save Settings. 13. The Configuration is done. To connect the three laptops to the Linksys Wireless router we must change the NIC on the laptop to Wireless NIC, to do this click on the first laptop and stay on the physical Tab. 12
14. Shutdown the Laptop by clicking on the round button on the left side of the Laptop. 15. Drag the NIC from the center of the Laptop and Drop it into the list on the left. The space on the center of the Laptop must be empty now. 16. From the list on the left drag the Linksys-WPC300N and Drop it into the empty space on the center of the Laptop. Then turn on the Laptop again. 17. After adding the Linksys NIC to the Laptop now we can connect the Laptop to the Wireless Router, to do so go to the Desktop Tab. 18. Click on the PC Wireless icon, and then go to the Connect Tab. 13
19. Select the network name which is UoD and then Click on Connect, it will ask you for the Password enter ( ) as the Password and then Click on Connect. 20. Repeat Steps for the remaining 2 Laptops and at the end we must have a network the same as this. 14
