How your account works and the implementation choices you need to make. How profiles are created for your users.

About LTI integration What is LTI? LTI is a standardized way of integrating learning applications with platforms including LMSs, portals, and other educational environments. LTI learning applications (like lynda.com) are called Tool Providers, and LMSs are known as Tool Consumers. Tradeoffs Since the LTI standard requires lynda.com content be launched from an LMS, the integration has distinct tradeoffs. Before opting for LTI, review this section and ensure you fully understand the advantages and disadvantages of LTI integration. Advantages Seamless access to lynda.com for students and instructors. Distinct user experiences for students and instructors. lynda.com content can be marked as gradable content. lynda.com content can be incorporated into LMS courses. Disadvantages LTI is not compatible with lynda.com native mobile applications. This includes the lynda.com ios, Android, and Windows 8.1 Apps. To access lynda.com content, users must have access to your LMS. If a user can t log into the LMS, the user will not have access to lynda.com. Content is only accessible from within the LMS. Educators cannot deep link to lynda.com content on class webpages, wikis, or other external systems. If your organization uses another form of single sign-on (SSO) with lynda.com, a unique user ID migration is required before configuring LTI to prevent duplicate profiles. Who supports LTI? LTI is a widely adopted standard. Listed below are a few LMSs that can serve as LTI Tool Consumers. This is far from a complete list. If you do not see your LMS below, contact your vendor to find out if they support LTI.

3 How LTI integration works LTI v1.1 provides a standardized method to establish a secure link to lynda.com from inside an LMS. LTI at its core is based on the OAuth open standard for authorization. By selecting a secure link (known as a Launch URL), users are able to seamlessly pass from an LMS into lynda.com without needing to provide credentials. LTI configuration components In this section, we will go over the LTI configuration components and the information required to configure lynda.com as a Tool Provider in your LMS. Launch URLs Selecting the lynda.com launch URL inside of an LMS (Tool Consumer) initiates the LTI authentication process by sending data to a lynda.com LTI endpoint. lynda.com offers three launch URLs with distinct user experiences. They are: Base Endpoint URL: Overview: This endpoint redirects users to the lynda.com member landing page (depicted below). This page allows users to easily discover new lynda.com content, view playlists, or pick up a recently viewed course where they left off. The user experience is the same regardless of the user s role. Grading is not available at this endpoint. Use case: I want users to be authenticated into lynda.com. Course Endpoint URL: Overview: This endpoint redirects users to a specific lynda.com course. You can find a list of all courses and their corresponding course IDs here: The user experience is the same regardless of the user s role. Use case: I want users to be authenticated into a specific lynda.com course. Playlist Endpoint URL: Overview: The playlist endpoint provides students and instructors with different user experiences. If an instructor selects a playlist LTI URL, the instructor will be redirected to a page where the instructor can curate lynda.com courses or videos into a playlist and link the playlist back to the LMS. When a student selects the same playlist launch URL, the student will be redirected to the instructor-curated playlist for viewing. Use case: I want to curate and present lynda.com content to my students.

4 LTI Keys To ensure communication between the LMS and lynda.com is secure, you need to configure your LMS to sign messages with public and secret keys provided by your lynda.com Solutions Engineer. Public Key This key is unique to your organization. It is used to encrypt plain text and verify digital signatures. Secret Key This key is unique to your organization and is mathematically related to the public key. It is used to encrypt plain text and verify digital signatures. As the name implies, do not expose this key publicly to avoid posing a security threat to users. LTI standard launch data When the LTI launch URL is selected, your LMS sends data about your users to lynda.com. Below you will find a list of common attribute names, example values, and brief descriptions of the attributes sent via the LTI. Typically, the attributes listed below are stored in our database to provide better reporting data, easier user management, and a personalized user experience. When possible, we recommend passing these attributes. In some LMSs they can be supressed by various privacy settings. lis_person_name_given (First Name): Ferris lis_person_name_family (Last Name): Bueller lis_person_name_full (Full Name): Ferris Bueller lis_person_contact_ _primary ( ): fbueller@newtrier.edu roles (User Role): student context_title (Course Name): Graphic Design 101 tool_consumer_instance_description (School): New Trier High School LTI custom attributes When creating an LTI launch link, the creator can add custom key/value attributes that are included in the launch data. It s a best practice to make custom attribute names lower case and use no punctuation other than underscores. Organizations can use custom attributes to automatically send additional data about users to lynda.com. This data can be viewed in reports. custom_keyname: value LTI Playlist Experience LTI offers users experiences based on role. In this section, we review student and instructor experiences. Instructor Once lynda.com has been configured as a global LTI tool provider within your LMS instance, instructors can add lynda.com playlist launch URLs to LMS courses. After selecting a lynda.com LTI launch URL for the first time, the instructor will be redirected to the my playlists page depicted. Note: steps to add playlist launch URLs vary by LMS. Refer to the Configuration Guide section of this document for step-bystep configuration instructions.

Student After an instructor links a playlist to an LMS course, students are redirected to the presentation view of the playlist after clicking the launch URL.

6 Configuration Guides This section provides step-by-step LTI 1.1 configuration instructions for commonly LMSs. If you do not see instructions for your LMS, refer to your LMS vendor s documentation for assistance in configuring lynda.com as a tool provider. Canvas Configure global tool provider: Login as an LMS System Admin Navigate to: Course Settings Apps View App Configurations Add App Select Manual Entry from the Configuration Type dropdown Enter lynda.com as the tool name Enter Consumer Key & Shared Secret Enter base Launch URL: Leave Domain blank Select Public from the Privacy dropdown Select Submit. Add external tool to a course: Login as an Instructor Select Module Click the + button Select External Tool from dropdown Click lynda.com External Tool Choose one of the three launch URLs: Base: Course: Playlist: Select the Load in a new tab checkbox. Blackboard Configure global tool provider: Login as an LMS System Admin Navigate to: System admin Building Blocks LTI Tool Providers Register Provider Domain Enter for the Provider Domain Select Set Globally radio button Enter Tool Provider Key and Tool Provider Secret Select send user data only over SSL radio button Check the following user data fields: Constituency in Course, Name, Address Select No to User Acknowledgment Message Select Submit

Select Save Changes Add external tool to a course: Login as an Instructor Select a course Select Turn editing on Select Add an activity or resource Select the External Tool radio button Select Add. In the Security Settings section, select all checkboxes.
