1 HELIX MEDIA LIBRARY BLACKBOARD BUILDING BLOCK Revision Date February 2014

2 The following guide explains how to install the Blackboard Building Block for use with Helix Media Library version 3.0. Built using LTI (Learning Tools Interoperability), the Building Block allows browsing content on and uploading to the Media Library through Blackboard. Implementation Log into your Helix Media Library as an administrator and click on the cog icon to the admin site. in the menu bar to get Click on Security Expand the Learning Tools Interoperability accordion Enter a key, a secret and choose the access level required*. When you install the Blackboard tool next you will match the key and secret to make the connection to the media library. *Access levels are explained further on in the guide

3 Uninstalling the current Building Block (Existing Users) If you have an earlier version of the Blackboard Building Block then you will need to uninstall it before installing the new one. To do this: Log into Blackboard as administrator. Locate the Building Blocks section on the main screen and click Building Blocks. Click Installed Tools and then search for the Helix Media Library Building Block. Click the down arrow next to it and select Uninstall. Click OK to complete the action.

4 Installing the Blackboard Building Block To download the Building Block please contact your local support representative for the latest version. Log into Blackboard as an administrator and click on System Admin Click on Building Blocks Click on Installed Tools

5 Click on Upload Building Blocks Under Install Building Block, click Browse Locate the building block on your machine e.g. HelixMediaLibraryBb war and click OK Click on Submit

6 Back on the Installed Tools page, locate the Helix Media Library plugin and click on the down arrow next to it. Select Set Available A success message will appear at the top of the page letting you know that it has been made available Select the down arrow next to the Helix Media Library plugin again and this time select Settings In order to be able to use the building block, ensure that from the Installed Tools page, the Helix Media Library tool has been set as available.

7 On the next screen click Approve to make it available. Making the Blackboard Building Block Available In order for the building block to be available for use it needs to be configured so that it is available in the system. To do this log into Blackboard as an administrator and click on System Admin, and the under Tools and Utilities click Tools. Scroll down and locate the Helix Media Library tool. To start with the availability will be set to off for Course Tool, Organization Tool and Content Type. Click on each off button to change them to on and under the Scope of Change column change them to New and existing courses, New and existing organizations, and New and existing courses and organizations respectively as per the screen shot below.

8 Once this has been done scroll to the bottom of the tools list and click Submit. Setting up the Blackboard Building Block on Helix Media Library Log on to HML as a system administrator and navigate to the admin/upload site. From the main menu options click Settings. Scroll down and open the Learning Interoperability Tools accordion. Select the settings you want and add in a logon/register message. Allow student uploads if you wish for students to be allowed to respond to assignments with videos of their own.

9 Using the Blackboard Building Block The Building Block can be used in conjunction with the Helix Media Library to allow users to seamlessly upload/browse content to/on the media library for use in assignments as learning material or evidence of work. Using the building block a lecturer can create an assignment and then add a media item which a student can then view, and in response submit their own video/audio file to be graded. The lecturer then has the option to submit feedback using the Building Block in the Grade Center. The Building Block can also be used to build content for a course, or even for creating announcements. The following section explains the processes described above. Access Levels There are different types of access levels you can choose to have: LTI only, AD/LDAP only and LTI and AD/LDAP. LTI Only This is for institutions that are not running the AD/LDAP integration module with HML and so will only have users logging in via LTI AD Only Institutions who have AD/LDAP integration on their media library and will have users logging in to the Mashup using their AD/LDAP account will use this option LTI and AD/LDAP This option is useful where not everyone has an account in HML, and so for example lecturers will log in with their AD/LDAP account and students can register and use LTI to log in having never logged into the Helix Media Library previously Using the Blackboard Building Block for the First Time If it is the first time of using the Building Block then you will be asked to register. This process is a one-off and once registered you won t be asked to register again. When you register your address will be matched with the one in your Helix Media Library account if you have one if logging on with your AD credentials. If you are logging in with LTI only then it will just create an HML account when you register. If the Blackboard Building Block is set to use LTI only then the screen will ask you to register:

10 If you have the Building Block set to LTI & AD/LDAP then it will give you the option to log in with your directory services account or register via LTI. If you have the building block set to AD/LDAP only then you will just see a login screen:

11 Creating an Assignment as a lecturer Log in to Blackboard as a lecturer and select Courses, and then the course you wish to create the assignment for. Under Assignments click Assignment and then when the Create Assignment page opens give it a title, and in the text editor click Mashups. Adding Content to an Assignment In the desired assignment click on the Mashups button in the text editor and select Helix Media Library. Once registered (first use only) select either upload or search. You can switch to either option in the next window if you change your mind.

12 Uploading a new clip Enter the information for the clip if uploading a new clip. Note: Change the option in the top left of the window to search for a clip instead if desired. Browse for the file you wish to upload

13 Click Next Select a thumbnail or choose a custom thumbnail then click Next

14 Add any associated files or captions files required for the clip and click Next. Confirm all the details are correct and then click Finish

16 The next window will be the Student View Preview. This will show you what the student will see when they view the media item in the course. As the clip has not been encoded the video will show as processing. Options that can be modified are: Media size (the size of the player on the page), which can be changed to one of the pre-set options or a custom size where width and height can be specified Default quality of the clip which can be changed in the drop-down box Download link can be provided for the clip Title of the clip can be displayed above it

17 Description of the clip can be displayed Click finish once any changes have been made. A screen will appear to let you know that the upload has been completed and the clip will appear once it s encoded. Do not close this window it will close automatically. The clip will show in the text editor along with the metadata where you can make amendments to the text if necessary. Click Submit to submit the assignment to the course. NB - Personal Categories When users register in Blackboard for the first time a personal category will be created for their account. It gives lecturers the ability to upload course material to a category in the media library that only they have access to, and students will only be able to upload to their personal category in assignment responses. Building Content

18 The Helix Media Library building block can also be used to build content independently of assignments and appears in the menu when you click on Build Content. It works in the same was as described above. Responding to an assignment Students can respond to an assignment with a clip of their own. When they enter the assignment and click on content they will see the assignment set by the lecturer with the media item in it. By clicking on the assignment heading it will take the student to the clip. To respond to the assignment click Type Submission and select Helix Media Library from the Mashup drop-down box. Note: Student Uploads must be enabled in the settings in HML in order for students to submit video responses using the building block. Once the student has registered they will be taken directly to the upload wizard. There is no option to search for existing clips when uploading as a student. Complete the upload wizard in the same way as shown above and submit the response.

19 Grading a Student Response When logging in as a lecturer or grader you can submit a video/audio response to the students submission and grade their effort. To do this go to the Grade Center, and click on Needs Grading. The assignment responses will be listed showing the student that submitted them. Next to the item name click the down arrow and click Grade All Users. The student s submission will be displayed in the main window. To give feedback, click on the A symbol on the right-hand side of the window and the text editor window will appear. In the text editor window select the Mashup as previously explained and search or upload the clip in the same way as described in the section for uploading a clip to an assignment. Submit the response along with a grade to complete the process.
