2 Off Campus Library Services Research involves locating magazines, books, encyclopedias, websites, etc., to give you information so you can write a paper. The Off Campus Library Services homepage is the best place to start your research: Associate Library Instruction 2

3 What is Available to You? From the library homepage, you have access to: Magazine/journal articles are available through our article databases. Reference books are available through our Virtual Reference Library database. The online library catalog helps you find regular books or search the e-book collection directly. Journal search engine helps you locate full text articles at IWU. Associate Library Instruction 3

4 What you will need before you begin using a database A library access number This number will be ed to you from OCLS. It will be sent to your MY account or call OCLS. It begins with the numbers: OR, you can also use your MyIWU log in credentials. Adobe Acrobat Reader Free software that will let you view articles Associate Library Instruction 4

5 Online Databases Finding Articles for Your Research

6 Let s start a search for articles. On the homepage, under Article Databases, click on the word Religion Associate Library Instruction 6

7 on the next screen, click on Christian Periodical Index (CPI).

9 Now you are in the database! Type your term into the first row search box. If your term always appears as 2 or more words and they always come together, then you can bind the term, using quotation marks, e.g. Jesus Christ Associate Library Instruction 9

11 We have a LOT of results! To further narrow the results, look for the section titled REFINE RESULTS. Check mark the option for Full Text, to limit to only the articles you can immediately read. You can also limit by date of publication. Associate Library Instruction 11

13 To read the article, click on the full text link for the article. The full text opens and can be printed, saved or ed. Associate Library Instruction 13

14 Catalogers use a unique way of providing subjects for books of the Bible. Here is the pattern: Bible. Book of Bible. So, if you wanted to search for articles on Philippines, search for: Bible. Philippines. For books that have multiple books, e.g. Timothy, search for Bible. Timothy, 1st. Associate Library Instruction 14

15 ATLA database ATLA also excellent for searching for articles, especially on the Bible and theology. More scholarly articles. Has its own Scriptures search that makes it very easy to search for articles down to the verse level. Associate Library Instruction 15

16 Continue clicking on Expand if wanting chapters or even verses. This Scriptures search is only available in ATLA. Associate Library Instruction 16

17 E-BOOKS: Finding E-books from IWU or a Local Library Associate Library Instruction 17

18 How can I access an E-book through IWU? Click on: Ebrary or EBSCO ebooks. Authenticate (like you did for articles).

19 Enter your topic to view a list of e-books that contain your term. They will be sorted with the most relevant listed first. To make the results more relevant, the quotation marks can be used around the term. Associate Library Instruction 19

20 You can view the full book (ebook Full Text); download it offline; view just the Table of Contents or look at the most relevant pages per this database vendor. Associate Library Instruction 20
