Snce not all models have the same standard equpment, your COMAND system equpment may devate from some descrptons and llustratons. 12 Operatng safety Warnng G Any alteratons made to electronc components and the software can cause malfunctons. The rado, amplfer, CD changer*, satellte rado*, telephone*, navgaton module and voce control system* are nterconnected. When one of the components s not operatonal or has not been removed/replaced properly, the functon of other components may be mpared. Ths condton mght serously mpar the operatng safety of your vehcle. We recommend that you have any servce work on electronc components carred out only by qualfed personnel. Warnng G In order to avod dstracton whch could lead to an accdent, the drver should enter system settngs wth the vehcle at a standstll and operate the system only when road and traffc condtons permt. Bear n mnd that at a speed of just 30 mp/h (approxmately 50 km/h), your car s coverng a dstance of 50 feet (approxmately 14 m) every second. COMAND supples you wth nformaton to help you select your route more easly and gude you convenently and safely to your destnaton. For safety reasons, we encourage the drver to stop the vehcle n a safe place before answerng or placng a call, or consultng the COMAND screen to read navgatonal maps, nstructons, or downloaded nformaton. Introducton Operatng safety Whle the navgaton system provdes drectonal assstance, the drver must reman focused on safe drvng behavor, ncludng attenton to traffc and street sgns, and should utlze the system s audo cues whle drvng. The navgaton system does not supply any nformaton on stop sgns, yeld sgns, traffc regulatons or traffc safety rules. Ths always remans your personal responsblty when you drve. DVD maps do not cover all areas nor all routes wthn an area. 3

Man menus are provded for the followng man functons: Audo (rado, tape, CD, CDC*, MP3-CD, DVD) Telephone* Navgaton Servce Callng up man menus Audo ( page 30): Press A. Satellte rado* ( page 80): Press B. Telephone* ( page 96): Press a. Navgaton ( page 114): Press b. Servce ( page 164): Press C. Menu dsplay A dsplay may consst of three areas. Example: FM menu 1 Soft key sectons 2 Man area 3 Status bar The functons currently assgned to the soft keys are dsplayed n the soft key sectons 1. A maxmum of fve soft keys may be dsplayed on each sde of the man area 2. 20

30 At a glance Menu system The man area 2 shows messages and settngs. You can change the settngs by operatng the system. The status bar 3 s dvded nto three areas. Left sde: The current operatng mode s ndcated. In ths example: Rado Center: The status of the current operatng mode or other selectable functons are ndcated. In ths example: FM = current waveband 9 = memory locaton of staton, e.g. 9 Rght sde: General status nformaton s ndcated ndependent of the operatng mode. In ths example: Ready = Telephone* s ready for operaton = Recepton strength of the moble phone Menu functons and submenus Usng the soft keys, functons can be swtched ON or OFF, or submenus can be called up. Example: Rado man menu: The FM/AM soft key swtches between FM and AM band. The Scan soft key starts/stops the channel scan. In some stuatons, soft keys may not have any functon and are not operatonal. A soft key wthout functon appears shaded out. 21

The system wll save all changes you have made. There are exceptons n whch pressng the Back soft key wll not result n the settngs beng saved. 32 Quck reference COMAND You have the followng optons to control the system: at the COMAND at the multfuncton steerng wheel (refer to vehcle Operator's Manual) usng the Voce control system* (refer to separate operatng nstructons for further nformaton) Ths Operator s Manual descrbes the control at the COMAND. Unless otherwse ndcated, the descrptons and llustratons refer to the COMAND. Swtchng the COMAND control unt on and off Swtchng on Turn the key n the steerng column lock to poston 1 or 2. or Press e. In both cases, the system wll actvate the operatng mode whch was actve when the system was swtched off. If the key s not n the steerng lock n poston 1 or 2, the system wll automatcally stop after around 30 mnutes. A warnng s dsplayed pror to the system swtchng off. Swtchng off At a glance Quck reference COMAND Turn the key n the steerng column lock to poston 0 and pull the key out. or Press e. Volume The volume s adjusted jontly for the telephone*, the navgaton system and the Voce control system. The volume settng apples to other operatng modes as well: rado, tape, CD, CD changer*, MP3-CD and DVD. When you adjust the volume, the system wll automatcally store the settng for the current operatng mode. The volume for the navgaton announcements can only be changed whle an announcement s beng made. 23

33 At a glance Quck reference COMAND Adjustng the volume At the COMAND, turn the rotary control at the e key. or Press J or I on the multfuncton steerng wheel. The volume s turned up or down dependng on the drecton of rotaton or the key pressed. The system remembers the volume settng when t s swtched off. When the system s swtched on agan, the volume may be lower than at the tme when the system was swtched OFF. Ths wll be the case when the volume was adjusted to a value outsde a certan range when the system was swtched off. Automatc volume control The automatc volume control feature adjusts the volume dependng on: vehcle speed (only n vehcles wthout sound system*) or ambent nose nsde the vehcle (only n vehcles wthout sound system*) other parameters (e.g. wndows open or closed) 24

When you make balance or fader settngs, the system wll automatcally save the settngs for the current operatng mode and others. Settng balance and fader In rado, tape, CD, CDC*, MP3-CD or DVD operaton: Press the Bal/Fad soft key. Cross-hars are dsplayed. The horzontal lne ndcates the balance settng. The vertcal lne ndcates the fader settng. You can now make balance and fader settngs. 25

Front optmzed: COMAND set the sound lnear for the front of the vehcle. Rear optmzed: COMAND set the sound lnear for the rear of the vehcle. Speech optmzed: Playback optmsed for language comprehensblty. Surround: Surround playback (not for rado). You can use dfferent sound functons* for the modes mentoned above. Example: For rado operaton the functon Default, for CD operaton the functon Surround. 27

37 At a glance Quck reference COMAND Surround sound offers a sound qualty superor to conventonal stereo sound. If the rado recepton s poor, the system should be swtched back to standard stereo playback. Swtchng back to standard stereo playback may mprove recepton qualty. Actvatng the sound functons* In rado, tape, sngle CD or CD changer* operaton: Actvate the man menu for the respectve operatng mode ( page 20). Press the Sound soft key. The Sound menu appears. AM Band In the FM Rado man menu, press soft key FM/AM untl AM s dsplayed n the status bar. The AM staton last tuned to wll begn to play. The frequency wll appear n the dsplay. Weather Band WB In the FM or AM Rado man menu, press the WB soft key. An automatc scan s startng and the COMAND plays and dsplays the frst strong WB staton. Swtchng back to FM or AM band Press the FM/AM soft key. The staton last tuned to wll begn to play. Swtchng back to Audo menu Press the Back soft key. 32

FM- and AM-Bands, Weather Band WB The rado wll tune n to the next recevable staton (FM, AM) or channel (WB) wth descendng/ascendng frequency dependng on the drecton of seek. WB Alternatvely, you can select the channel drectly: Press a number key 1 through 7. The selected channel s not shown n the status lne. Manual tunng (FM, AM) Actvate the desred wave band ( page 32). Press g or h longer than 2 seconds. The functon s actve. or Press H or h. The frequency wll change by the tunng ncrements for the respectve waveband each tme one of the buttons s pressed. FM Band The frequency dsplayed wll change n ncrements of 0.2 MHz. AM Band Tunng wll take place n ncrements of 10 khz. 33

43 Audo Rado operaton Staton selecton va number keypad (presets) FM- and AM-Bands Press one of the number keys, such as 2 brefly. The rado wll tune to the frequency assgned to that memory locaton. If none has been set by you, the rado wll not change the staton. FM and AM presets are ndependent and can only be accessed whle n the correspondng band. Staton selecton va drect frequency entry (FM, AM) E.g.: MHz n the FM band Actvate the desred waveband ( page 32). Press *. An nput lne wll appear. Enter the desred frequency wth the number keys wthn 8 seconds, e.g for FM. The staton you have selected wll begn to play. Frequency band FM AM Frequency range FM AM Savng statons for FM and AM ( page 36). 34

44 Audo Rado operaton FM, AM band Entres outsde the frequency range are not possble. If you do not make another entry wthn 8 seconds, the functon wll be canceled and you wll lsten to the staton last tuned to. Automatc staton scan (FM, AM) The statons n a gven waveband (FM, AM) can be scanned one after the other for 8 seconds each. The scan functon stops automatcally when the frst staton receved has been scanned twce. Staton scan performs two runs. Durng the frst run, statons wth good recepton are played. Durng the second run, statons wth weaker recepton are played. Start scan functon Actvate the desred wave band ( page 32). Press the Scan soft key. The scan functon wll begn. Scan wll appear n black letterng. End scan functon and play a staton Press the Scan soft key agan f you hear the desred staton. 35

45 Audo Rado operaton You can use the followng functons: Memory functons Savng statons manually (FM, AM) Savng statons automatcally FM, AM ( page 37) Selectng a staton from the FM/AM Preset menu ( page 38) Selectng a staton from the FM/AM Auto presets ( page 38) Savng statons manually (FM, AM) In the Rado man menu Actvate the desred waveband ( page 32). Press one of the number keys, e.g. 2, longer than 2 seconds. You wll hear a confrmaton beep f the beep tones opton was actvated n the system settngs ( page 199). The rado saves the current staton at the memory preset selected. The memory preset selected wll appear n the status lne, e.g. FM2. On the memory lst Actvate the desred waveband ( page 32). Press the Presets soft key. The memory Preset menu wll appear. There are 10 presets avalable (1-9, 0). An exstng entry s overwrtten n the memory lst when a new nput s gven. Use H, h or g, G to hghlght the desred memory preset. Press E longer than 2 seconds. The current staton wll be saved at the memory preset selected. You wll hear a confrmaton beep f the beep tones opton was actvated n the system settngs ( page 199). 36

As a result, the recommended route may devate from the deal route. The data stored on the DVD only reflects local condtons at the tme of DVD producton. The route s shown on the map. Press the Va soft key. The Va soft key has no functon f the route cannot offer any va routes. If the va functon s not yet actve, you may now select a va route. Settng the hour: Each tme the button s pressed, the tme s adjusted n ncrements of 1hour. Settng the mnute: Wth GPS recepton: Each tme the button s pressed, the tme s adjusted n ncrements of 30 mnutes. Wthout GPS recepton: Each tme the button s pressed, the tme s adjusted n ncrements of 1mnute. Press the Back soft key. or Press E. The settng s saved.
