1 CF Vector User Manual V The CF Vector application is a Windows Metro 8.1 application that can be used as an aid in learning about vectors. Two dimensional vectors [x,y] are used for simplicity. Vectors can be set by specifying an X and Y value and are displayed on a graph. When the user executes a vector operation, the result is displayed and an explanation of the operation is shown in a popup. Operations include: a. Adding two vectors. b. Multiplying a vector by a scaler (number). c. Rotating a vector through a specified angle. d. Displaying a normal to a specified vector. Figure 1 Startup Screen 2. When the application starts, a splash screen will show up for approximately three seconds; then, the main screen will appear with a status of Ready shown (Figure 1). 3. Creating/Saving/Deleting/Changing Vectors. 1

2 a. Creating a single vector. i. Click on the New button. An input dialog will appear (Figure 2). ii. Fill in the X and Y values. iii. Click on the OK button to accept the values and create the vector; click on the cancel button to cancel the creation. iv. If the OK button was clicked, a new vector will be displayed (Figure 3). 3 i. Highlight the vector or vectors that you want to delete by either double-clicking on the vector(s) or selecting the vector(s) from the vector list on the right side of the display. The highlighted vector(s) will be colored red (Figure 3). ii. Right click on the display to bring up the popup menu (Figure 4). Figure 4 Delete Vector Popup Menu iii. Select delete; this will bring up the confirmation dialog (Figure 5). Figure 5 Delete Confirmation Dialog iv. To delete the vector, click on the Yes button; click No to cancel the deletion. c. Clearing all vectors. 3

4 i. Right click on the display to bring up the popup menu (Figure 6). Figure 6 Selecting Clear ii. Select Clear from the menu. A confirmation menu will pop up (Figure 7). Figure 7 - Confirm Clear All iii. To clear all vectors, click on the Yes button; click No to cancel the operation. 4

5 d. Saving a vector set to a file. i. Click on the Save button. A file selection dialog will appear (Figure 8). Figure 8 Save File Selection Dialog ii. Either type in a new file name or select a file name, then click on the OK button. iii. The vector set will be saved to a file and a confirmation message will be put on the status line (Figure 9). 6 e. Loading a vector set from a file. i. Click on the Load button. A file selection dialog will appear (Figure 10). Figure 10 Load File Selection Dialog ii. Select a file from the list. The file should have a.csv suffix. iii. The loaded vector set will be displayed, and a confirmation message will be put on the status line (Figure 11). Figure 11 - Confirmation of Vector Set Load 6

7 f. Editing an existing vector. i. Highlight the vector that you want to edit by either double-clicking on the vector or selecting the vector from the vector list on the right side of the display. Only one vector may be selected for editing. (Figure 12). Figure 12 - Selecting A Vector ii. Right click on the display to bring up the popup menu (Figure 13). 8 iii. Fill in the new X and Y values (Figure 14). Figure 14- Edit Vector Values iv. Click on the OK button to accept the new values and for the vector; click on the cancel button to cancel the creation. v. If the OK button was clicked, a vector will be displayed with the new X and Y values. 4. Performing Vector Operations. You can perform add, multiply (by a scaler), rotate, and calculate the normal values for the vectors. a. Adding two Vectors. i. Highlight the vectors that you want to add by either double-clicking on the vector or selecting the vectors from the vector list on the right side of the display. Only two vectors may be selected to add. ii. Right click on the display to display the popup menu. Select Add Vectors from the menu (Figure 15). 8

10 b. Multiplying a Vector by a Scaler. i. Highlight the vector that you want to multiply either double-clicking on the vector or selecting the vectors from the vector list on the right side of the display. Only one vector may be selected. ii. Right click on the display to show the popup menu. Select Multiply A Vector from the menu (Figure 17) to display the input dialog. Click on the OK button to accept the scaler multiplier, Cancel to cancel the operation. 10

11 v. The new vector (Multiplier * the Vector) will be displayed as a highlighted vector along with an explanation of how to multiply a vector by a scaler (Figure 19). Clicking on the display will hide the explanation. Figure 19 - Display of the Multiplied Vector 11

12 c. Rotating a Vector. i. Highlight the vector that you want to rotate by either double-clicking on the vector or selecting the vectors from the vector list on the right side of the display. Only one vector may be selected. ii. Right click on the display to show the popup menu. Select Rotate A Vector from the menu (Figure 20) to display the input dialog. Click on the OK button to accept the entry, Cancel to cancel the operation. 12

13 v. The vector will be highlighted, and then rotated through the number of degrees selected. An explanation of how to calculate vector rotation (Figure 22) will be displayed. Clicking on the display will hide the explanation. Figure 22 Display of the Rotated Vector d. Calculate the Normal Vectors to a Vector i. Highlight the vector that you want to generate the normal to by either doubleclicking on the vector or selecting the vectors from the vector list on the right side of the display. Only one vector may be selected. ii. Right click on the display to show the popup menu. Select Normal Vectors from the menu (Figure 23). Figure 23 Selecting Normal Vectosr from the Popup Menu 13

14 iii. The normal vectors will be displayed, and the both the normal and the original vectors will be highlighted. Also, an explanation of how to calculate vector normals (Figure 24) will be displayed. Clicking on the display will hide the explanation. Figure 24 Display of the Normal Vectors 5. Errors If an error occurs, a message box will normally pop up (Figure 21>. If an unexpected error occurs, an error message will pop up and an error file will be written in the user s Picture folder (Figure 22). If this happens, please the error file to: cfvector@cfsw.biz 6.
