10 Why does the NHS need a new model? In the UK, Cisco is drafting a new model for the wider Public Sector to address amongst other things the demands of Public Sector Network (PSN) The NHS Technical Reference Model (TRM) therefore provides consistency across Public Sector crucial for collaborative working e.g. Social, Education New layers provide new levels of granularity and a user context Enterprise Architecture is flexible e.g. TOGAF is a framework for developing architecture, not an architecture in itself

11 Like Cisco SONA, The Technical Reference Model Is a Technical Reference Model suitable for incorporation into an Enterprise Architecture Can be used directly with a methodology like TOGAF Is based on a series of layers that build up incremental functionality Is Service Oriented in nature, comprising a series of re-usable building blocks at each layer Can be deployed on a selective and progressive basis depending on customer requirements and business priorities

12 Unlike Cisco SONA, The Technical Reference Model Introduces two additional layers into the model An ICT Layer - in which reside ICT Sub- Systems now separated from the Intelligent Network Layer A User or Service Context above the functional layers that allows generic and functional user and service types to be defined This permits user and service profiles to be plotted through the lower technical layers of the model Adds new functions not contained in Cisco SONA; for example power management intelligent network services
