This course focuses on the fundamentals of graphic communication and industry standard computer programs such as: Google Earth, Auto CAD, SketchUp, Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign via exercises related to physical planning and urban design. Enhance your ability to compose images and text, utilize color pallets, fonts and create design layouts for strong board and document presentation. This course is designed for upperclassmen undergraduates and graduate students in planning and landscape architecture who are considering participating in multi-disciplinary desing competitions and/or wish to learn how to successfully communicate ideas in a clear and appealing way to a diversity of audiences. The concepts learned in the course will be developed through laboratory work and evolved via the production of in class exercises, collective knowledge development assignments, a final board, booklet and resume Learning outcomes Upon the successful completion of this course students should know how to: [1] communicate a strong foundation and knowledge of basic graphic communication theory and practice [2] demonstrate competency at adequately combining and employing industry standard computer programs such as: Google Earth, Auto CAD, SketchUp, Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign. [3] create deliverables that combine complex data in attractive and clear formats (this includes boards for multidisciplinary design competitions, such as the ULI student competition, booklets/reports and resumes).
2 FORMAT The course combines lectures, hands on lab work and student presentations. The hands on experience is the key to success in this class. Emphasis is placed on a cooperative learning environment. Participants are encouraged to share information, skills, and ideas. However, all of the work you submit for credit must be your own. LOGISTICS Tools: An 8GB thumb drive Dropbox account Relevant Resources: Cornell University s CIT Training & Documentation for: Photoshop, In Design, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint. The Visual Display of Quantitative Information, Envisioning Information, Beautiful Evidence and Visual Explanations by Edward R. Tufte. The Architect s Portfolio by Andreas Luescher, Information Design Workbook by Baer, Google SketchUp for Site Design by Daniel Tal, ASLA. Typeface Primer by Adobe, Youtube turorials. General Academic Expectations & Integrity: Attend all classes, make progress in the medium, help and cooperate with your classmates, take risks, make mistakes, behave professionally, and come to each class with an open mind and willingness to learn. Your final grade will be based on your willingness to achieve the above as well as the grades you obtain in the semesters assignments. Academic Integrity is of the essence. Each of you must abide by Cornell University s Code of Academic Integrity. Refrain from playing computer games and sending s/text messages while in class. Attendance: High priority is placed on attendance due to the fact that this course meets only two hours per week. Regular attendance is essential to learning and academic achievement. REQUIREMENTS & EVALUATION I. Collective knowledge development (25 pts) 5 reading assignment and image gathering (5 pts each) II. In class exercises (15pts) 6 exercises (2.5pts each) Lowest score will be dropped III: Industry Standard Programs (30pts) Lowest scoring assignment will be dropped Google Earth (5pts) Auto Cad (5pts) Sketch Up (5pts) Hand graphics (5 pts) Photoshop (5pts) Illustrator (5pts) Indesign (5pts) IV: Final Deliverables (30pts) Project 1: Presentation board (20 pts) Project 2: Booklet (5pts) Project 3: Student resumé (5pts) TOTAL POINTS: 100 All class requirements will be evaluated based on the following criteria: Complete, Correct and On time.
3 TENTATIVE COURSE SCHEDULE Note: The class schedule is subject to change at the instructors discretion. WEEK 1 August 26 Discussion - Introductions, Course syllabus discussion, Survey class Lecture - Introduction to Graphic Design Lab - Discuss file management/file structure, and file naming convention. Overview of InDesign - the interface and basics, how to prepare assignments and presentations in InDesign. Sign up for student led discussions. In Class Exercise #1 - page layout: combining images and text Collective Knowledge Development (CKD) Assignment 1 Visocky O Grady, Jenn + Ken Cognitive Principles for Information Design in The information design handbook pp Tufte, Edward Escaping Flatland in Envisioning Information pp Due date: September 2 by 10:00 am WEEK 2 - NO CLASS WEEK 3 September 9 Discussion - Student led discussion for CKD Assignment 1 Lab - Site selections for class project 1, conversations on urban design and physical planning. Google Earth interface, Google Earth to Auto CAD, The Auto CAD interface, essential commands, setting up a drawing, using layers, using layouts, introduction to attributes. Drawing strategies to complete a site plan using a Google Earth image. In Class Exercise #2 - Align site image in Auto CAD CKD Assignment 2 Visocky O Grady, Jenn + Ken Communication Principles for Information Design in The information design handbook pp Tufte, Edward Micro/Macro Readings in Envisioning Information pp Industry Standard (IS) Assignment 1 Presentation of site brief Due date: September 16
4 WEEK 4 September 16 Discussion - Student led discussion for CKD Assignment 2 and presentation of IS Assignment 1 Lab - Recap of basic Auto CAD commands, managing external references, using layouts, line weights, scale a drawing to print and export layers for Photoshop renderings, assistance in completing AutoCAD plan for Sketch Up. In Class Exercise #3 Trace your complete site plan using a Google Earth image. CKD Assignment 3 Visocky O Grady, Jenn + Ken Case Studies in The information design handbook pp Tufte, Edward Layering and Separation in Envisioning Information pp IS Assignment 2 Trace Google Earth site with Auto CAD utilizing layers, line weights and viewports. Print your progress in an 11x17 black and white, pin up in the front of the room at the beginning of class for review. Due date: September 23 WEEK 5 September 23 Discussion - Student led discussion for CKD 3 and IS 2. Lab - Revise Auto CAD drawing based on review IS Assignment 3 Finalize tracing assigned site with Auto CAD bring 11x17 black and white of your final product for pin up and review. Due date: September 30 WEEK 6 September 30 Discussion - Pin up and review of 11x17 Auto Cad final plans, color palettes and the composition of competition boards. Lab - The Sketch Up interface, opening an Auto CAD file in Sketch Up Pro, 3-D massing, extrude, components, scenes, shadows, cameras. How to export perspective views for Photoshop In Class Exercise #4 - Extrude all buildings in your plan and run a solar analysis IS Assignment 4 Refine Sketch Up and select one perspective views to render in Photoshop. Bring 11x17 black and white print of the view for pin up and review CK Assignment 4 Edwards, Betty Understanding and applying color theory in Color pp Tufte, Edward Color and Information in Envisioning Information pp Select a color pallet from Kuler.adobe.com. Print the selected color palette in an 11x17 for pin up and review. Due date: October 7
5 WEEK 7 October 7 Discussion - Pin up and review of 11x17 perspective view for hand sketching exercises and photoshop rendering. Present your color palette selection. Hand sketching as a tool for communicating your ideas quickly. Lab - Review of Sketch UP In Class Exercise #5 - Hand sketching field trip IS Assignment 5 Finalize the hand sketches and scan them as tiff files Due: October 14 WEEK 8 October 14 Discussion - Pin up and review of sketches and Sketch UP final perspectives Lecture - begin the interface and basics of Photoshop, layers, tools, image manipulation, rendering. Export plan from Auto CAD for photoshop rendering. Lab - Photoshop rendering techniques + shadows In Class Exercise #6 - Begin rendering of perspective view, sketches and plan. IS Assignment 6 Complete a photoshop rendering of your plan and perspective bring printed copies for review Due: October 21 WEEK 9 October 21 Discussion - Pin up and review of renderings. Lecture - Present and discuss examples of context maps, circulation diagrams and edited land use maps. Color and meaning. Lab - Revise renderings. From Auto CAD into Illustrator (diagrams) In Class Exercise #7 - Export layers from Auto CAD into Illustrator and prepare a context map, a circulation diagram and a land use map. IS Assignment 7 Complete context, circulation and land use diagrams, bring printed 11x17 for review Due: October 28 WEEK 10 October 28 Discussion - Review IS 7 Lecture - Present on font choices and hierarchy, color palette and the effective layout of competition boards In Class Exercise #8 - Make revisions to your work according to the review
6 Lab - Revise all diagrams according to review. Create a 24x36 board layout in Indesign IS Assignment 8 - Select fonts and font hierarchy bring 11x17 print out of font families for pin up and review, and complete an Indesign 24x36 board layout, print an 11x17 color version for pin up and review. Due: November 4 WEEK 11 November 4 Discussion - IS 8 pin up and review Lab - refine drawings and work on combining them into a 24x36 board for presentation IS Assignment 9 Combine all your products into the 24x36 board for presentation, bring a full size printed version for review and discussion, bring a printed version of your resume and any report you wish to improve Due: November 11 WEEK 12 November 11 Discussion - IS 9 pin up Lecture - InDesign booklet and resume creation Lab - Revise final board, generate a booklet and revise your resume In Class Exercise #9 - Prepare a hand drawn layout of your booklet and resume IS Assignment 10 Complete a revised version of your board, resumé and booklet Due - November 18 WEEK 13 November 18 Final deliverables work session Discussion - Pin up and present board, resumé and booklet drafts Lab - Board, booklet and resumé work session All revised Final Deliverables Due December 2 for presentation WEEK 14 November 25: Thanksgiving Break - NO CLASS WEEK 15 December 2: Last day of class FINAL DELIVERABLES DUE for presentation and review
