Model 172R 172S 182T T182T 206H T206H Serial Numbers and On 172S9810 and On , and On T and On and On T and On REASON To provide a configuration upgrade and enabling instructions for the Garmin G1000 Terrain Awareness Warning System (TAWS-B) function. The TAWS-B upgrade enhances the current Terrain and Obstacle Proximity Warning System by providing additional integrated aural and visual warnings and cautions of impending terrain and obstacles. DESCRIPTION The Garmin G1000 system software and Terrain SD Cards are upgraded as described in this Service Bulletin. The TAWS-B configuration upgrade includes the following changes: The MAP - TERRAIN PROXIMITY page is replaced by the MAP - TAWS page on the Primary Flight Display (PFD) and Multi-Function Display (MFD) displays. Enables system annunciations to provided TAWS system alerts, cautions, and warnings to meet requirements for a TSO-C151b TAWS Class B System. Enables TAWS-B self test to verify MFD/PFD, Integrated Avionics Units (GIA's), terrain databases, MFD/PFD software levels, and GPS availability. Provides additional PFD and MFD menus, windows and softkey functionality required to support TAWS-B. 6 ACCOMPLISHMENT INSTRUCTIONS The equipment below, or equivalent, will be necessary. NAME NUMBER MANUFACTURER USE PC Computer Commercially Available To access the Internet and transfer files. SD Card Reader Commercially Available To transfer files from the PC computer to the SD card. NOTE: For airplanes that will install the TAWS-B for the first time, go to Step 1. NOTE: For airplanes that have previously installed the TAWS-B and need to install it again, go to Step Connect external power to the airplane. 2. Make sure of approved system software. A. Make sure that all of the necessary circuit breakers are pushed in for normal mode startup of the G1000 System. B. Put both the MASTER BAT and AVIONICS MASTER switches to the ON position and allow the system to power up. C. For airplanes thru , 172S10138 thru 172S10431, thru , thru , T thru T , T thru T , thru , thru , T thru T , T thru T , and airplanes that have complied with SB Revision 1 but have not complied with SB (or latest version). On the MFD startup screen, make sure that the model and software version system displayed in the upper right corner of the screen is the same as Table 1. TABLE 1. (2) If the software version is not that of Table 2, load the correct software per Cessna Service Bulletin SB (or latest revision), and then go to Step Make sure that you have the most current Terrain Cycles and the Obstacle Cycles databases installed on the obstacle / terrain data SD cards located in the lower SD card slot of the Primary Flight Display (PFD) and the Multi Flight Display (MFD). The most current databases may be downloaded from the GARMIN website at NOTE: There are additional charges required by GARMIN to download the most current Obstacle Cycles and Terrain Cycles databases. Make sure you have the following information available prior to accessing the GARMIN website: Airplane Owner's Name Mailing Address Telephone Number Credit Card Credit Card Billing Information The Airplane Terrain and Obstacle Cycles The Airplane System ID Number A. Find and record the System ID number, the Terrain Cycles, and the Obstacles Cycles from the airplane. (1) With the system powered on, rotate the large FMS knob on the MFD to go to the AUX page. (2) Rotate the small FMS knob to the AUX-SYSTEM STATUS page. (3) Find the AIRFRAME display box in the upper right corner of the screen, and record the SYSTEM ID NUMBER. (4) Push the DBASE softkey, to activate the curser. (5) Rotate the small FMS knob and scroll down to and record the Terrain Cycle and the Obstacle Cycle. (6) Put both the MASTER BAT and the AVIONICS MASTER to the off position. (7) Remove the obstacle/terrain data SD card from the lower slot of the PFD and the MFD. B. Make sure of the latest Terrain Cycle and Obstacle Cycle database from the GARMIN website and update if necessary. (1) Terrain Cycle. (a) Log onto the GARMIN website at (b) Click the AVIATION DATABASES link. (c) Select the G1000: NON-AIRFRAME SPECIFIC from the drop-down menu and click the CONTINUE button. (d) Select TERRAIN and click the CONTINUE button. July 23, 2007 Page 5

8 (e) (f) (g) Follow the On-Screen directions until you get to the COVERAGE AREA web page and click the WORLD WIDE button. Click on I AGREE TO THE ABOVE TERMS AND WANT TO DOWNLOAD THE FILE. The FILE DOWNLOAD window will appear. Look at the FILE NAME to determine the current Terrain Cycle database. NOTE: The current Terrain Cycle database is listed in the download file name between the ww and the.exe of the file. Example: Download File Name tg1000-ww-06t1.exe. The 06t1 is the Terrain Cycle database information. The 06 is for the year 2006 and the t1 is for Terrain version 1. (h) Compare the current Terrain Cycle database from the GARMIN website download file to the Terrain Cycle database from the airplane that was recorded. (i) If the Terrain Cycle is current, go to Step 3B(2). If the Terrain Cycle is not current, click on the SAVE button on the FILE DOWNLOAD window opened in Step 3B(1)(g) and note where you saved the file on your computer. (j) From the GARMIN website, click the CONTINUE button. (k) Login as necessary. 1 (New customers) Click the ENTER CUSTOMER INFO button. 2 (Returning customers) Enter your password to login. (l) Follow the On-Screen directions until you get to the ENTER UNIT ID screen. Enter the SYSTEM ID number from the airplane that was recorded in the ENTER UNIT ID box and click the CONTINUE button. (m) Click the PURCHASE DATABASE and click the CONTINUE button. (n) Follow the On-Screen directions until you have the UNLOCK CODE. (o) Record the UNLOCK CODE. (p) Open the Terrain Cycle database file downloaded on your computer and open the program. (q) Click the SETUP button to begin the program self-extracting set-up wizard. (r) Follow the On-Screen directions, until asked to enter the SYSTEM ID and UNLOCK CODE. Enter the SYSTEM ID and the UNLOCK CODE in the required field box as necessary and click the NEXT button. (s) Insert the first obstacle/terrain data SD card into the SD card reader on your computer and click the PROGRAM CARD button. (t) Monitor the Terrain Cycle database update progress. (u) When the update is completed, remove the first obstacle/terrain data SD card from the SD card reader and install the second obstacle/terrain data SD card and click on the PROGRAM CARD button. (v) Monitor the Terrain Cycle database update progress. (w) When the update is completed, remove the second obstacle/terrain data SD card from the SD card reader and click the FINISH button. (2) Obstacle Cycles. (a) Log onto the GARMIN website at (b) Click the AVIATION DATABASES link. (c) Click on the DATABASE CYCLES button. (d) Scroll down to the OBSTACLE DATABASE CYCLE NUMBER and compare the cycle numbers from the GARMIN website to the Obstacle Cycles recorded from the airplane. Page 6 July 23, 2007

9 (e) If the Obstacle Cycles are current, install the obstacle/terrain data SD cards into the lower slots of the PFD and the MFD on the airplane and go to Step 4. If the Obstacle Cycles are not current, click on the AVIATION DATABASES link. (f) Select the G1000: NON-AIRFRAME SPECIFIC from the drop-down menu and click the CONTINUE button. (g) Select OBSTACLE and click the CONTINUE button. (h) Follow the On-Screen directions until you get to the COVERAGE AREA screen. (i) On the COVERAGE AREA screen, click the UNITED STATES button. (j) Click on the I AGREE TO THE ABOVE TERMS AND WANT TO DOWNLOAD THE FILE to begin the Obstacle Cycle database download. (k) From the FILE DOWNLOAD screen, click on the SAVE button and make note of where the file is saved to on your computer. (l) On the GARMIN website, click the CONTINUE button. (m) Login as necessary. 1 (New customers) Click the ENTER CUSTOMER INFO button. 2 (Returning customers) Enter your password to login. (n) Follow the On-Screen directions until you get to the ENTER UNIT ID screen. Enter the SYSTEM ID number from the airplane that was recorded in the ENTER UNIT ID box and click the CONTINUE button. (o) Click the desired PURCHASE DATABASE and click the CONTINUE button. (p) Follow the On-Screen directions until you have the UNLOCK CODE. (q) Record the UNLOCK CODE. (r) Open the Obstacle Cycle database file downloaded on your computer and open the program. (s) Click the SETUP button to begin the program self-extracting set-up wizard. (t) Follow the On-Screen directions, until asked to enter the SYSTEM ID and UNLOCK CODE. Enter the SYSTEM ID and the UNLOCK CODE in the required field box as needed and click the NEXT button. (u) Insert the first obstacle/terrain data SD card into the SD card reader on your computer and click the PROGRAM CARD button. (v) Monitor the Obstacle Cycle database update progress. (w) When the update is completed, remove the first obstacle/terrain data SD card from the SD card reader and install the second obstacle/terrain data SD card and click on the PROGRAM CARD button. (x) Monitor the Obstacle Cycle database update progress. (y) When the update is completed, remove the second obstacle/terrain data SD card from the SD card reader and click the FINISH button. (z) Install the obstacle/terrain data SD cards into the lower slots of the PFD and the MFD. 4. Do the TAWS-B Configuration Upload. A. Put both the MASTER BAT and AVIONICS MASTER switches to the ON position and allow the system to power up. B. With the system still powered on, pull the PFD (ESS and AVN BUS 1) and MFD (AVN BUS 2) circuit breakers. C. Push and hold the ENTER key on the MFD, close the MFD (AVN BUS 2) circuit breaker. 10 D. Release the MFD ENTER key when the following message appears: INITIALIZING SYSTEM. E. Install the TAWS-BGSW00 Unlock card in the PFD top slot. F. Push and hold the ENTER key on the PFD, close the PFD (ESS and AVN BUS 1) circuit breakers. G. Release the PFD ENTER key when the following message appears: INITIALIZING SYSTEM. H. (For airplanes thru , 172S10138 thru 172S10431, thru , thru , T thru T , T thru T , thru , thru , T thru T , T thru T , and airplanes that have complied with SB Revision 1 but have not complied with SB , do the steps that follow: NOTE: If the airplane is listed above and has complied with SB , go to Step 4I. (1) WiththesmallFMSknobonthePFD,gotothesystemgroupCONFIGURATIONUPLOAD page. Push the small FMS knob to activate the cursor and rotate the small FMS knob to highlight the ENABLE TAWS in the file field. (2) Push the ENT key. (3) Rotate the large FMS knob to highlight AIRFRAME in the section field and push the LOAD softkey. (4) When the START CONFIGURATION UPLOAD? prompt appears, select YES and push the ENT key to acknowledge it. (5) Monitor the status of the upload. When CONFIGURATION UPLOAD COMPLETE appears, push the ENT key to acknowledge it. (6) Make sure that the summary field displays COMPLETE. (7) If the summary field displays incomplete, do Steps 4H(1) through 4H(6) again. I. (For airplanes and On, 172S10432 and On, , and On, T , T and On, , and On, T , T and On, and all airplanes that have complied with SB ) Do the steps that follow: (1) With the small FMS knob on the PFD, go to the system group SYSTEM UPLOAD page. Push the small FMS knob to activate the cursor and rotate the small FMS knob to highlight the CONFIGURATION FILES in the file field. (2) Turn the small FMS knob to highlight ENABLE TAWS and push the ENT key. (3) Push the LOAD softkey. (4) Monitor the status of the upload. When UPLOAD COMPLETE appears, push the ENT key to acknowledge it. (5) Make sure that the summary field displays COMPLETE. (6) If the summary field displays incomplete, do Steps 4I(1) through 4I(6) again. J. Push the small FMS knob to de-activate the cursor if complete. 5. Make sure of the TAWS-B upload. A. Pull the PFD (ESS and AVN BUS 1) and MFD (AVN BUS 2) circuit breakers. B. Wait a minimum of two minutes and then close the PFD (ESS and AVN BUS 1) and the MFD (AVN BUS 2) circuit breakers to apply power to the system. C. Make sure of the presence of MAP-TAWS page. (1) Allow the system to power up into normal mode. (2) On the MFD, rotate the large FMS knob to the MAP page. (3) Rotate the small FMS knob to the MAP-TAWS page. (4) If the MAP-TAWS page is not found, do Step 4 and Step 5 again. Page 8 July 23, 2007

11 D. RemovetheTAWSUnlockSDcardfromthetopcardslotonthePFD. NOTE: The TAWS Unlock SD Card is system serial specific andmayonlybeusedontheairplane forwhichitwaspurchased.oncethetawsunlocksdcardisusedonanairplaneitmust remain with that airplane. In the event a TAWS Unlock SD card is lost or damaged, a replacement card is available from Cessna Propeller Aircraft Customer Services for an additional fee. E. Put both the MASTER BAT and AVIONICS MASTER switches in the OFF position. 6. Do a test of the TAWS-B system. NOTE: The airplane must be positioned so that it has an unobstructed view of the southern sky to give the strongest GPS signal possible when you do the test. The TAWS SYSTEM test will not pass the self-test without a good GPS signal. A. Wait a minimum of one minute, and then put both the MASTER BAT and the AVIONICS MASTER switches in the ON position and allow the system to power up into normal mode. B. Make sure the SPKR button on the audio panel is enabled. C. Make sure that the TAWS system successfully passes the TAWS self test by making sure that the audible message TAWS SYSTEM TEST OKAY is heard from the cabin speaker. 7. Put the MASTER BAT and AVIONICS MASTER switches in the OFF position. 8. Make sure that the Garmin G1000 Cockpit Reference Guide for Cessna NAV III, Part Number Rev. A (or later revision) is in the airplane. 9. The TAWS-BGSW00 Unlock card should be stored in the Pilot's Operating Handbook Aircraft Software sleeve. NOTE: If TAWS-B was previously installed, no further action is necessary. 10. Make an entry in the airplane logbook that states compliance with this Service Bulletin. A. Make a copy of the logbook entry. B. Fill out the Certification Of Installation form. C. Dear Cessna Owner: This Owner Advisory is to inform you that Service Bulletin has been issued to provide revised instructions for airplanes that comply with SB (or latest revision): Garmin G1000 System Software Upgrade to Version NOTE: Compliance with is not required if in compliance with the Original Issue of this Service Bulletin. provides a configuration upgrade and enabling instructions for the Garmin G1000 Terrain Awareness Warning System Class-B (TAWS-B) function. The TAWS-B upgrade enhances the current Terrain and Obstacle Proximity Warning System by providing additional integrated aural and visual warnings and cautions of impending terrain and obstacles. The TAWS-B configuration upgrade includes the following changes: The MAP - TERRAIN PROXIMITY page is replaced by the MAP - TAWS page on the Primary Flight Display (PFD) and Multi-Function Display (MFD) displays. Enables system annunciations to provided TAWS system alerts, cautions, and warnings to meet requirements for a TSO-C151b TAWS Class B System. Enables TAWS-B self test to verify MFD/PFD, Integrated Avionics Units (GIA's), terrain databases, MFD/PFD software levels, and GPS availability. Provides additional PFD and MFD menus, windows and softkey functionality required to support TAWS-B. The Garmin G1000 Cockpit Reference Guide for Cessna NAV III is utilized for instructions on operating the TAWS-B system. Compliance is optional: may be accomplished if desired.
