Lecture (02) Introduction to Networks II By: Dr. Ahmed ElShafee ١ Agenda Types of Networks Network element identifications (logical address hardware address) Discovering your home LAN Discovering WAN from your home Packets trip inside your home LAN Packets trip inside your enterprise LAN Packets trip from your home LAN to WAN ٢
Types of Networks: Local Area Networks (LAN) LAN is a communications network that interconnects a variety of device, providing means for information exchange among these devices. ٣ LAN (2) Characteristics 1. Small scope, building, or cluster. 2. Owned by organization which need communication facility. 3. Data rate very high. ٤
LAN (3) Configuration, and types: Switched LAN (Ethernet LAN) Wireless LAN Fiber LANS ٥ Types of Networks: Wide Area Networks (WAN) Consists of number of interconnected switching nodes, providing exchange between different LANs or terminals over huge geographical area ٦
WAN (2) Transmission is being routed through these nodes to the destination device. Nodes are not concerned with contents of the, their purpose is to provide a switching facility that will move the from node to node. ٧ WAN (3) Used for terminal/computer, and computer/computer communication. ٨
WAN (7) ٩ Types of Networks: Metropolitan Area Networks (MAN) middle ground between LAN and WAN private or public network large area It has two forms Leased line Terrestrial links ١٠
