1 Basic Web Browsing Ben Johnson Terms World Wide Web Certain items on Web pages are underlined. These underlined items are called links. The World Wide Web gets its name from these links because they are like threads in a spider s web. By clicking the link with the mouse, you can jump from one page on the Web to another, be it a page on the same computer or a page on another computer on the other side of the world. One document is linked to another, which is linked to another, and so on. Web Browser A browser is your interface to the World Wide Web. Browsers allow you to view and use web pages. We will use Netscape Navigator. Internet Explorer is another very popular browser that we will take a look at if time permits. URL URL stands for uniform resource locators. It is simply the address of a web site. Most address start with www. followed by a company name or organization, which is followed by a suffix like.com. Some common suffixes:.com commercial usually non-profit organizations higher education federal government Bookmark A way to save the address of web site that you would like to return to. Starting Netscape Navigator 1 Double click on the Macintosh Hard Drive. 2 Double click on the Internet folder. 3 Double click on the Netscape Navigator Folder. 4 Double Click on the Netscape Navigator Icon.

2 The Netscape Navigator Window Title Bar Close Browser Window The Netscape Toolbar Zoom Window Button Collapse Window Button URL address field Scroll Bars Security Indicator Resize Browser Window Close: Closes the open browser window. (Does not quit Netscape!) Toolbar: Icons for commonly used commands. Title Bar: The title of the open web page. (Name used when bookmarked) Zoom: Quickly resizes the window. Collapse: Collapses the window. Only the title bar is displayed. URL address field: This is where you type the web address of the site that you would like to visit. Scroll Bars: Use these to view parts of a page that do not fit in the window. Resize: Allows you to adjust the size of the window manually. Security Indicator: Make sure this is closed if you ever give a credit card number on-line. The Netscape Navigator Toolbar Click here to hide/show the tool buttons. 1. Back Takes you back one page. (click and hold this button to see a list of sites you can move back to). 2. Forward Takes you forward one page. 3. Reload Reloads the page at the current location. 4. Home Returns you to the PSD home page. 5. Search Takes you to the Netscape search page. (Not recommended) 6. Images Loads images for current page (if auto load images is off) 7. Print Prints the current page. 8. Stop Will stop loading current page. Stop can be used to abort the link if it is slow and you are tired of waiting.

3 Finding Web Pages With a Search Engine 1 Type: into the address field. Press return. Go to PSD s search tools page for a list of more search engines. 2 Type a few words into Google s search field. Add more words to narrow your results. Put phrases, names, and words usually found together in quotation marks. Press return. Bookmarking Web Pages That You Would Like To Return To 1 Begin by erasing all of the existing bookmarks. Click on the Netscape menu. Then select bookmarks. 2 Select all the old bookmarks and folders by clicking on them while holding down the shift key. Press delete on the keyboard after you have selected all the items. 4 Close the bookmark window by clicking on the close box. 5 Type the address of a site you would like to bookmark or locate it with a search engine. Double click on the bookmark icon next to the address field. 6 Now click on the bookmark menu. You should see your new bookmark.

4 7 Click on the Netscape menu to open the bookmark window to create folders to organize your bookmarks. 8 Click on the file menu and select new folder. Name the new folder and click OK. Now you can drag and drop your bookmarks into the folders you create. Netscape Messages 1 This message will appear if you type a non-working or wrong address. 2 This message will appear if the district s proxy server does not allow the site based on sex, violence, language, etc. Copying and Pasting an image to Microsoft Word 1 Direct the mouse pointer over the web image that you would like to copy. Press and hold the mouse button down until a pop-up menu appears. Then click on copy this image. 2 Return to Microsoft Word. Choose the Edit menu and select paste. The image should appear in your document.

5 Configuring Netscape Navigator 1 Click on the Edit menu and select Preferences 2 3 Start by making PSD your home page. (The page that loads when you click on the home button on the Netscape toolbar. Click on Navigator. Select the Home page radio button. Type the address: into the home page location field. Set up the proxy configuration by clicking on the triangle next to the Advanced preference to expand it. Click on the Proxies section. Select the Automatic proxy configuration radio button. Then type the address: in the configuration location field. Evaluating Web Pages 1. What type of domain is it? (.com,.gov,.edu,.org or is it a personal homepage) 2. Who is the author? 3. Who is sponsoring the site? 4. What is the purpose of the site? 5. Does the site include other viewpoints? 6. Is it posted by an organization, is it a well-respected one? 7. Does the author indicate the date of the last update? 8. Is the author qualified? 9. Is the authors address clearly indicated on the main page? 10. Does the information seem biased? Citing Web Sites Creator(s) of site. Title of site. URL (Date Month Year). Example: Burka, Lauren P. "A Hypertext History of Multi-User Dimensions." apocalypse.org/pub/u/lpb/muddex/essay/ (5 Dec. 1998).

6 Class Assignment: 1. Guess the addresses of the following web sites: National Aeronotics and Space Administration Public Broadcasting System Denver Museum of Nature and Science Ocean Journey 2. Use Google to locate 20 good education websites or lesson plans for your content area. Evaluate each site. 3. Bookmark these sites and place them into folders by topic. 4. Copy and paste an image from the WWW to Microsoft Word. Cite the source. 5. Practice setting the home page and proxy configurations. Make sure they are correct before you leave. Ask for the instructor s help if necessary. (Students may change these and it is helpful to know how to reset them.)
