1 Access to Moodle The first session of this document will show you how to access your Lasell Moodle course, how to login, and how to logout. 1. The homepage of Lasell Learning Management System Moodle is at Or go to my.lasell.edu and click the Moodle link 2. Click Login in top right. Your user ID and password are your Lasell Network user ID and password, the same user ID and password you use to logon to computers on campus. Enter these in the box and click the Login button. Notes: If you have any problem about your User ID and password, try to reset your Lasell password at you are a graduate student and can access MyLasell, but are still unable to access Moodle, please check Self-Service to see if you have a Stop on your account. If so, contact the appropriate office to remove the Stop. Once the Stop is removed, you will have access to Moodle in about 24 hours. Question?: Contact IT Help Desk, Ext 2200 ( ) or helpdesk@lasell.edu. 3. Once you have logged into Moodle, click My Courses in center of screen. DASHBOARD. Click on your course. 4. You should now be in your course. You will see the main course materials appearing in the center of the screen. Click on any of the items such as the Syllabus to open the file and view the related materials. Once in an item, you can return to course page by clicking on your course ID number at top. 5. Logging out: To log out, click your username and then click LOGOUT Need Help? 24/7 Faculty and Student Support The IT Department is providing technical support for Moodle issues. 2 Update Profile The session of this document describes how to locate and edit user profiles. Your profile is your identity on Lasell Moodle. All Lasell Moodle users can see it, including your instructors. To edit your profile To access your profile, click your Student Name in top right. Click Profile and then click Edit Profile. To expand list options, either click on arrow next to item or at top right of screen, click Expand All Fill out the information you wish to include in your profile. Only fields with red color labels are required. 1. The fields of your first name, last name and address cannot be changed because they are automatically updated using your information in Lasell s database. If you feel any changes need to be made, contact the Registrar s Office to have them updated. 2. The description box gives you a place to tell your Moodle community a little about yourself. 3. In User Picture section, you can upload a picture of yourself by clicking Add Then browse and open your picture from the computer. Now your profile is all set to go. 3 Assignments The Assignment tool in Moodle specifies a task that requires students to submit a written assignment (such as essays) to the instructor in Moodle for grading. If your instructor has added an assignment activity in your Moodle course, you can access assignments either from an assignment link in a week/topic section ( ) All assignments have the same icon ( ). Assignments normally have a deadline that has to be paid attention to. In some courses if your professor set late submission is not allowed, you cannot submit your work anymore when the due date and time has passed. It is therefore important to use proper time management when working on an online course. Note that due times are usually listed as course events in the Calendar and appear in the Upcoming Events block. To Upload Work Files 1. At the Moodle course homepage, click on the name of the assignment. This reveals any assignment details including due date, number of papers need to be submitted, a place to upload assignment files Submission status and Due Date Click Add Submission button to attach your file. 2. Click the Add Submission button and then click the Add button. Choose Upload a file from your computer tab in the left. Browse and open your file. Then click Upload this File (please follow the file s naming conventions that your instructor requested). Click Add symbol Drag & Drop files here (only in Firefox, Google Chrome browsers) Click Save Changes Contact the IT Help Desk for Moodle Assistance Page 3
4 Drag and Drop Feature: In Firefox and Google Chrome browsers only, you can drag and drop your file into the white box in the file submission page. Click the Save Changes button to submit the assignment. You will see your submitted file is listed and the submission status changed to a green box message: Submitted for grading 3. To re-submit your assignment before the deadline. Click the Edit Submission button. Click on file. Click Delete. Click OK to confirm. Then click Add icon to select a different file. When done, click Save Changes. To Submit Online Text In the online textbox, it is ALWAYS a good idea to type your text in a text editor such as notepad or Microsoft Word first and then copy and paste it into the body of the message. This way in case you didn t submit your post successfully, you will still have a copy of the text. How to copy content from Microsoft Word to Moodle? a. In the Message section, click expand icon ( ) in top left, click the Paste from Word icon b. Copy your text from Microsoft Word c. Click inside the Paste from Word textbox, then Hold Down CTRL + Press V keys on keyboard to paste into Paste from Word text window d. Click Insert To review a graded assignment Once you have uploaded your assignment file, your professor will assess it and give feedback. Usually, you will also be given a grade. To see the grade and feedback of the assignment: 1. Locate the same assignment link you used to submit the assignment. 2. The grading status row will be green and say Graded 3. Notice the section below the assignment instruction details. This may contain feedback about the assignment and a grade assigned by your professor for this assignment. 5 Participating in Discussion Forums The session of the document will show you how to locate and participate in forum discussions in your Moodle course. The discussion forum encourages you to take more learning responsibilities and to become an active participant. Please follow forum directions and discussion rubrics, post your own threads and/or reply to existing messages. If your professor has added a discussion forum activity in your course, the forum link on the Moodle course homepage will look like this Enter a forum by clicking on its name. in front of the discussion forum s name. You will find a short description of this forum, and maybe a list of one or more topics already created by your professor or your classmates. To post a new thread in a forum 1. Click the forum's link on course page 2. Click "Add a new discussion topic" button 3. Give the thread an applicable title in the Subject field. The subject field is mandatory. 4. In the Message section, it is ALWAYS a good idea to type your text in a text editor such as notepad or Microsoft Word first and then copy and paste it into the body of the message. 6 5. For the Subscription setting, please choose your preference if you want to receive s of every post to the forum, set it to "Send me copies of posts to this forum." If not, set it to "I don't want copies of posts to this forum." Some faculty may have set their forums to force you to be subscribed or to not allow you to be subscribed, in which cases this option will not appear. If subscription is forced by your professor and you feel you get too many s, please talk to your professor to change the setting on his/her side. 6. You may also add an attachment to a forum posting. Click the Add.. button and then click the Upload a file from your computer on the left. Browse and open the computer file. Finally click Upload this file. But be aware of the maximum file size Drag and Drop Files: In Firefox and Google Chrome internet browsers only, you can drag and drop your attachment into the attachment space. Drag and drop a file into this space 7. Check your post for errors, and then click the Post to forum button at the bottom. 8. You will then receive a message indicating that the post was successful. 9. You have 30 minutes to edit the post if you wish. To reply to a thread 1. Click on the name of the thread in the forum 2. Click the "Reply" link at the bottom right of the post to which you want to reply. How to copy content from Microsoft Word to Moodle? a. In the Message section, click expand icon ( ) in top left, click the Paste from Word icon b. 7 c. Click Insert The interface fields are the same as they are for making a new thread. You can reply to any post, not just the most recent. 3. When you are done, click the Post to forum button at the bottom. After you have posted, you will have 30 minutes to edit your post. FAQ I am using Firefox and cannot copy and paste text using the right click button on my mouse. How can I copy and paste text inside of Moodle? To copy and paste text inside of Moodle, place your cursor in front of your text and highlight the text. Then press Ctrl + C on the keyboard to copy the text. 8 Directions for posting URL or Website Link to a Discussion Forum. 1. Copy the URL of the article you want to post. Select Add a New Discussion Topic. 2. When a new window opens, fill in the subject line with an appropriate title. See example: 3. In the message space, click expand icon ( ) in top left, type and highlight the title of what you are posting. Click the highlighter tool in the toolbar to change the highlighter color 4. With the title highlighted, click the link icon (it looks like a link in a chain). 5. The Insert Link Box will open. Paste the URL in Link URL and change target section to open in new window. 9 Taking Quizzes This session of the document will show you how to locate and take a quiz in Moodle. Your instructor may set up online quizzes in your Moodle course for students: as practice sessions for frequent self assessment; or as tests to evaluate learning process. If your professor has added a Quiz activity in your course, a quiz icon the quiz. will appear in front of Before to take the quiz: 1. Unless you are prepared to complete the quiz, please don t enter the quiz in a rush. 2. Schedule enough time to take your test. Be sure to take your quiz when there are few interruptions. 3. Make sure you have stable internet connection before taking a quiz. 4. Moodle quizzes may need to open in a pop-up window, so if you have a pop-up blocker enabled, the quiz window may not come up. To turn off the most common blockers: a. For Windows Internet Explorer: go to Tools > Pop-up Blocker and click Turn Off Pop-up Blocker. b. For Windows Firefox, go to Tools > Options, choose the Content tab, uncheck Block pop-up windows, and click the OK button. (The latest version can be downloaded at c. For Macintosh Firefox, go to Firefox > Preferences, choose the Content tab, uncheck Block pop-up windows, and click the OK button. (The latest version can be downloaded at find the download link for English and MacOS X.) To start the quiz: 1. Enter the quiz by clicking on the link on the course home page. 2. Read the general quiz information first. This page is very possible to include following information: how many attempts are allowed for this quiz, how grades will be calculated if multiple attempts allowed (average of two attempts, or the highest grade of two attempts), the quiz time limit, or the due date (the quiz closing time) etc. 3. Click on the Attempt quiz now button. If your quiz has a time limit, you will see a timer appear in the upper left corner in the Quiz Navigation bar. 10 4. Questions may appear as multiple choices, short answers, essay, true/false, etc. formats. To go to the next page, click Next at the bottom of the screen 5. Answer all of the questions, until you see the Summary of Attempt page When the timer expires, all your answers will be submitted automatically even if you didn t click the Next button. For the questions you have not answered, you will receive zero points. 6. On the Summary of Attempt page, click Submit all and finish. 7. Your instructor will have decided what you will see next.
