1 OpenMind 2 Choose New Document to create a new document, or Open Document to open a previously created document, including templates. OpenMind provides numerous curriculum-aligned templates for Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies that can be copied, edited, customized and saved. These curriculum-friendly templates are supported by several hundred high quality clipart images that have been specifically created to match the templates. There are five different views in which you can create using OpenMind: 1. Mind Map This is for the users that have sporadic thought processes and see topics in a nonlinear fashion. 2. Top Down This is for the user that is more structured and sees their ideas in a level of priority, wherein the higher the level, the higher the priority. 3. Left Right This view is the more uniformed view, blending principles from both the Top Down and the Left Right reading fashion that is most commonly used today. 4. Timeline - Simply add dates or times to your branches and use the Timeline view to see the information displayed along a horizontal time axis. 5. Outline - View the map as a hierarchical list that you can expand and collapse as required.
2 Creating a Mind Map For this example we will choose New Map Mind Map view Choose Open after you have selected Mind Map Here you are given the opportunity to name the Main Idea or Root of your project Do this by Left Clicking the Root once and typing the desired text, President of the United States By hitting Return twice, you will deselect the Root and create a new Branch Name this new Branch George Washington Hit Return two more times to create a new Branch. Name this branch Abraham Lincoln Create 2 more Branches with the names John F Kennedy and George W Bush by following the same steps We have created the initial framework for our presentation. We will now expand the Mind Map so that each Main Branch has further Sub Branches, or what can be referred to as Sub Categories of your presentation. Right Click the text George Washington, then choose Insert, and Sub-Branch Name this Sub Branch History Press Return twice in order to deselect the first Sub Branch and create the second Sub Branch Name this second Sub Branch Highlights You will see that your Mind Map is starting to take shape. What we need to do is to make sure that each of our Main Branches has the correct Sub Branches required to create a complete presentation. Repeat the same steps as above to create two Sub Branches for each Main Branch It is important to know that the Mind Map is following a Clockwise Order in this view, therefore this is the order you will present your information: 1. George Washington 2. Abraham Lincoln 3. John F Kennedy 4. George W Bush If you want to change the order, just click and drag the branches to their new location. We have now created the complete framework for our presentation. We are ready to start adding assets.
3 Using the Media Catalog The Multimedia Catalog contains multiple images for use in your Mind Map. You can search for a specific type of image or use the tree list to locate a specific category or picture. For this example, we are going to locate an image to use as the Branch Picture of the Main Idea or Root of our presentation. First we need to open the Multimedia catalog Left Click on the Multimedia tab on the right side of your screen In the Search for menu of the Multimedia Catalog, type flags and browse for an image of the American flag. We are going to use an image of the American flag as the Main Idea or Root Image. We need to drag this image from the Multimedia Catalog onto our Mind Map: Left Click and Drag the image from the Multimedia Catalog onto the Main Idea or Root When the Mouse Pointer is over the Root and the text is highlighted Orange, release the mouse button You will be given a few different options as to how you would like to reference the image to the idea: Branch Picture This creates a thumbnail that is shown directly with the Idea. Floating Picture This creates a thumbnail that is shown, but is attached to the Idea by a blue line, allowing you to place the Image anywhere on the screen while keeping the relationship between the Idea and the Image. Attached Picture File This attaches the Image to the Idea, but the Image is not directly shown. For this example we are going to choose Branch Picture. Select the Branch Picture radio button and click OK Inserting Pictures from the Internet Find and save a picture you want to use. Click on User Area in the Mulimedia Catalog. Then right click in the blank space and choose Add Element. Navigate to your saved photo and it will appear for you to drag into the map.
4 Adding Text OpenMind offers a few different ways to include text in your presentation. A Comment will pop up with information when a student hovers over the yellow icon. To create a comment: Right Click the History Branch of John F Kennedy, choose Insert and then Comments. Type in the comment He was president from Close the window when you are finished. A Text Note allows the user to take notes, create bullet point lists, or paste text into the presentation. To create a text editor: Right Click on the History Branch of George Washington, choose Insert, and then Text Note (New) You will notice that when you select an Idea, the Notes Panel becomes active. You can type directly into this Notes Panel, or copy and paste text. For this section we will type text into the Notes Panel. Type the text He was the first president. in the panel Left Click somewhere else on the Map. You can tell that there is an asset either included on or attached to a Branch or Idea because a small Paper Clip icon will appear to the right of the Branch or Idea. Attaching Hyperlinks Hypertext is a good way for a user to cite their source, or refer to a website. Right Click the Presidents of the United States Root Select Attach Object Hyperlink
5 The Hypertext box appears: In the Name field type the text, Whitehouse Website Select the URL link radio button In the Path field, type the text We have just created a link to an existing website. You can now see that you can execute any link by simply hovering over the Paper Clip icon to the right of the Branch or Idea. Adding an Audio File To insert Audio: Right Click on the Highlights Sub-Branch under John F. Kennedy Select Attach Object-Sound File Navigate to a file already saved for you. (Go to Global-HAGEWOOD-Presidents-Great Speeches and click ok. Adding a Video File To insert Video Clips: Right Click on the Highlights Sub-Branch under George W. Bush Select Attach Object-Video Navigate to a file already saved for you. (Go to Global-HAGEWOOD-Presidents-George Bush SNL.WMV and click ok.
6 Exporting to Microsoft Word When you export to Microsoft Word, a Main Branch will become a Main Heading in Word. A Sub Branch will become a Sub Heading in Word, and so on. The export will follow the Clockwise Order of the Mind Map, placing the headings in the corresponding order. Everything is included or attached to the Branch will be in the corresponding section of Word. You can tell that there is an asset either included on or attached to a Branch or Idea because a small Paper Clip icon will appear to the right of the Branch or Idea. Go to File Export to Microsoft Word Advanced Export Re-Import Your File You can make any changes that you would like while working in Word, then save the file and re-import the file back into OpenMind. Your Mind Map will be updated. Exporting To PowerPoint When you export to Microsoft PowerPoint, a Main Branch will become a Main Slide in PowerPoint. A Sub Branch will become a Sub Slide in PowerPoint, and so on. The export will follow the Clockwise Order of the Mind Map, placing the Slides in the corresponding order. Go to File Export to Microsoft PowerPoint Advanced Export
7 You are now able to choose between a number of professionally designed templates. You can also choose one of the standard templates that come with Microsoft PowerPoint. Choose a template and then hit Export View the PowerPoint presentation that is created You can see that the Mind Map has been exported using the Branches as Slides and Sub Slides, following the Clockwise Order. *There are many other options available in OpenMind 2 to add text, graphics, hyperlinks, and more.
