1 Creating a portable bookmark file (Netscape). Ben Johnson ben.johnson@cahs.colostate.edu NOTE: You may need your BTC to disable security temporarily so you can place the backflip button on your tool bar or desktop. 1. Type in the backflip address. 2. Click on Click here next to New user. This starts your new account. 3. Enter the required information to start a new account. 4. Click on the next button when you are finished. 5. If your name was not already taken and you entered the correct information you will see the message below. If your user name was taken or you entered incorrect information you will need to make the requested changes. 6. When asked if you want to add your existing bookmarks click on the No Thanks button. (You may want to do when you get to your school computer.)

2 7. Remove all the checks from the boxes. (Backflip only does this for advertising money.) 8. Open the bookmarks folder on your computer by clicking on the Bookmarks menu and then clicking on Edit Bookmarks. 9. Position the Bookmarks window next to the browser window. Then drag the gray backflip rectangle into the bookmark window. 10. Now drag the Backflip icon on to your desktop. If you did everything right you will see a Backflip It! icon on your desktop. 11. Return to Netscape Navigator and Click on Next.

3 12. Click on the start backflipping click here button. 13. Go to an educational website that you would like to bookmark. Then double click on the blackflip button on your desktop. 14. Click on the New Folder button. 15. Name the folder education. Check the Let others see box. Then click on the Create Now button.

4 16. Make sure the education folder is selected. Then click on backflip it button. 17. Go to another education site that you would like to bookmark. Double click on the backflip button on your desktop. Make sure the education folder is selected. Then click on the Backflip It button. Editing Your Bookmarks 18. Go to If you are already logged-in skip to step Log-in if you signed out. 20. Click on 21. Click on the folder containing the bookmark you would like to edit.

5 22. Click on edit button next to the bookmark that you would like to edit. 23. Now you can change the title or description. You can also place the bookmark in a different folder or delete the bookmark. You can even create a new folder to place the bookmark into. Make sure to save your changes. Changing Your Backflip Preferences 24. Change your preferences by clicking on the View All Preferences. 25. I would recommend changing the preference so when you login to backflip you see your folders. Visiting Your Public Folder as a Student Would 26. Type the address: (your login name) Exporting Your Bookmarks 27. Click on the Get Tools button. (You must go to your folders first.) 28. Click on Export Pages. 29. Scroll down and click on Export to File.

6 30. Now save your new bookmark file. Click on the file menu and pull down to save as. 31. Change the format to source and save your new bookmark file to the desktop. Adding Bookmarks without a desktop button or Browser Button 32. Go to backflips.com and login. Then go to my folders. 33. Click on the add pages button. 34. Type or copy and paste the address into the URL field. Then type a short description. Select the folder you would like the bookmark placed in or create a new folder to place it in Copying Someone Else s Bookmarks 35. Type the public address of another backflip member and press enter: 36. Open a folder that you are interested in viewing. Then click on the copy folder button. Assignment: 1. Search the web to find five quality websites on five different topics. Topic examples: Search engines, history lesson plans, on-line tools, history resources, and travel sites. Quality Web Sites examples for search engines: Google, AltaVista, All The Web, Northern Lights, and Yahoo. 2. Create five backflip folders for each topic. Place five quality websites inside of each folder.

7 3. Make each folder public. 4. Visit your public folder, just as a student would. 5. Practice changing public folders to private folders. (If you don t want different classes to see each other s bookmarks. 6. Visit my backflips public folder at: and copy my education folder to your account. 7. Copy a folder of someone sitting next to you. 8. Change your preferences so that your folders automatically come up when you log-in. 9. Export your backflip bookmarks to the desktop. 10. Open the backflip bookmarks that you just saved to the desktop. 11. Practice moving your bookmarks into another folder. 12. Change the name of a bookmark. 13. Change the name of a folder.
