WHO S AT YOUR TABLE? Name, Organization, What brought you here today? How do you use information technology at home? (Wearable Fitness Monitors, Streaming TV / Movies, Programmable Thermostats, GPS in Car, Games?) What is your favorite way to escape technology (or just take a break)?
AGENDA Welcome What is an MPower Sustainability Session? Introductions at Your Table Recap of Previous Sustainability Session Framing of Green IT Guest Presentation: Brenna Holzhauer, Aldo Leopold Nature Center Guest Presentation: Thom Jones, Isthmus Publishing Past Examples / Actions You Can Take Small Group Discussion MPower Programatics Housekeeping & Next Session

Framing of Green IT
Framing of Green IT Four Areas for IT Energy Efficiency In-House: 1. IT equipment at the desktop 2. IT equipment in the server rooms 3. IT networking equipment and resources 4. Facility equipment that supports IT environments
Framing of Green IT Desktop Energy Computer with monitor(s) Laptops & Thin clients Local printers Scanners Fax machines External hard drives Power strips Smartphones Network Energy Network printers Duplication devices Network switches Network routers Access points Phone systems Remote location servers Security cameras Fire walls
Framing of Green IT
THE 4 SYSTEM CONDITIONS IN THE WORKPLACE
1: Extraction We cannot dig up stuff from the earth at a rate faster than it naturally returns and replenishes.
2: Synthetics & Chemicals polyvinyl chloride (PVC) brominated flame retardants (BRFs), We cannot make stuff at a rate faster than it takes to naturally break down into the environment. Read More: Green Gadgets: Designing the Future
3: Degradation We cannot cause destruction to the planet at a rate faster than it takes to re-grow.
4: Society s Needs We cannot do things that cause other to not be able to fulfill their basic needs.
In 2013, U.S. data centers consumed an estimated 91 billion kwh of electricity Projected to increase to 140 billion kwh/year by $13 billion annually in electricity bills for U.S businesses 100 million metric tons of carbon pollution per year.
More Facts: If just half of the technical savings potential for data center efficiency were realized: Electricity consumption in U.S. data centers could be cut by as much as 40 percent. 39 billion kilowatt-hours saved annually $3.8 billion a year saved for U.S. businesses Source: Data Center Efficiency Assessment
Special Guest Speaker Brenna Holzhauer Aldo Leopold Nature Center
Goal: Save energy and set official organizational policies about computer shutdown and sleep modes. Barriers: No IT Dept to set policies or equipment settings Small staff; work variety of hours; many PT staff sharing computers; some staff log-in remotely Conflicting information about why/why not/how often to shut down comps Aldo Leopold Nature Center Major Accomplishments: Established official energy policy (based on Mpower info) Communicated via All-Staff Memos (with instructions), signage around office, reminders on each monitor Most staff are now in compliance most of the time We were recognized for this (and other sustainability measures) by In Business as Sustainable Small Business of the Year Lessons Learned: It was easy! Staff just needed official policy and simple instructions Meets our mission; staff are happy to be saving energy / reducing emissions Little actions go a long way! 22 CPUs + 37 Monitors = w/ full 100% adherence (sleep mode settings + evening/weekend shutdown), we can expect to save approximately 30,000 kwh (nearly $4,000) + approximately 20.7 tons CO 2 each year, OR the amount of carbon sequestered by 530 trees, OR annual ghg output of 4.5 cars
