2 Section A Compulsory section Question 1 (50 marks) a) Regardless of differences in physical appearance, virtually every computer may be envisioned as divided into six logical units or sections. List and elaborate the roles and functions for each logical unit. b) C programs consist of modules or pieces called functions. What is the difference between user-defined functions and C Standard Library functions? 4 Section B Answer any TWO questions from this section. Question 2 (25 marks) a) State whether the following are true or false: (10 marks) i) Comments cause the computer to print the text enclosed between /* and */ on the screen when the program is executed. ii) A sentinel value must be a value that cannot be confused with a legitimate data value. iii) All arguments following the format control string in a printf function must be preceded by an ampersand (&). iv) The remainder operator (%) can be used only with integer operands. v) The default case is required in the switch selection statement. vi) The expression (x > y && a < b) is true if either x > y is true or a < b is true. vii) An expression containing the operator is true if either or both of its operands is true. viii) ix) An array subscript can be of data type double. An individual array element that is passed to a function as an argument of the form a[i] and modified in the called function will contain the modified value in the calling function. x) It is an error if an initializer list contains more initializers than there are elements in the array. b) Write the function header for each of the following functions: i) Function hypotenuse that takes two double-precision floating-point arguments, side1 and side2, and returns a double-precision floating-point result. ii) Function smallest that takes three integers, x, y, z, and returns an integer. iii) Function instructions that does not receive any arguments and does not return a value. [Note: Such functions are commonly used to display instructions to a user.] iv) Function inttofloat that takes an integer argument, number, and returns a floating-point result. c) Calculate the value of 2.5 raised to the power of 3 using the pow function. Write a statement to print the result with a precision of 2 in a field width of 10 positions. What is the value that prints? (3 marks) 3

Write a statement to print the 10 integer elements of array num1 in a predefined for loop below by using pointer subscript notation with nptr which you ve defined in section (ii). for ( i = 0; i < 10; i++ ) { /* insert your statement here */ Write a statement to print the value of the integer variable pointed to by pointer fptr. v) Assume a val array that contains five unsigned integer elements (each element is stored in 2 bytes) and the starting address of the val array is at location in memory. (4 marks) c) Write statements to accomplish each of the following: i) Display the value of the seventh element of character array f. 5

Initialize each of the 5 elements of single-subscripted integer array g to 8. iv) Total the elements of floating-point array c of 100 elements. d) Write a segment of codes in C language that will find the smallest and the largest value stored in an integer array num of size 100 and print both values at the end of the codes.
