3 INTRODUCTION Welcome to the PIR Thermal Sensing True Detect module. The combination of PIR Motion Detection with Pixel Motion Detection is nothing short of revolutionary as it virtually eliminates all false triggers which are typical of Pixel-only Motion Detection. Swann is calling this technology True Detect Thanks to the increase relevance in Motion Detection, another new feature is Push Notifications, as they will now be quite relevant. 9 HEAT OR THERMAL? THAT S THE QUESTION Use the right words, but don t ignore plain English Not technically correct to state Heat Detection Hence Swann is using the words Thermal Sensing on packaging Heat may create expectation cameras will capture any heat source, like fire or light bulbs PIRs don't detect or measure "heat". PIRs detect infrared radiation emitted/reflected from an object All objects above absolute zero (0 Kelvin or -273 Celsius) temperature emit heat energy in form of radiation Passive means that PIRs detect energy given off by other objects We may have to make concessions to using the words heat or hot as these are plain English expressions customers will ask for at the store, as thermal radiation may be too technical Page 9

10 PIR DETECTION: WHAT TO EXPECT In very general terms, we can expect the PIR to detect thermal radiation from human-sized and larger subjects within human temperature range, and it should not detect smaller subjects, such as cats or birds. 11 BUT IT S ALL RELATIVE It will depend on portion of the image the subject takes & their temperature range. If small subjects, like a Cat or a Bat, are very close to the PIR, they will represent a large image portion, which may trigger recording. A bat could fly close to the PIR. A Cat roaming outside in a cold Scottish winter could trigger recording due to its temperature contrast against the cold floor & depending on how close it is to the PIR. On the other hand, if larger subjects, such as a Human or a German Shepard are over 10m away from the PIR or represent a small portion of the image, they won t trigger recording. [+] MORE Vehicles are harder to predict, as they may be outside of human temperature range but are IMAGE moving warm objects. A Car that just parked and is cooling down will cross human temperature range, but it won t trigger recording, because it is not moving. Fire could be detected in its early stages but it s not guaranteed by design, while Light Bulbs are too small in the image to trigger recording. Page 11

12 WHAT ABOUT HOT DAYS? GOOD POINT On hot days, the PIR s efficiency decreases, as the PIR won t be able to distinguish moving subjects as well (within human temperature range) if they have the same temperature as their background. As a comparison, it would be like trying to hear someone in a rock concert. Page 12

13 THE APP What s new? Smartphone Push Notifications HomeSafe View 1 st Swann non-smart DVR featuring Push Notifications Previous non-smart DVRs only had the ability to alerts upon Motion Detection. This DVR kit is the 1 st one to send Push Notifications to its app thanks to the increased efficiency of the PIR camera. This is of great value to the user. Page 13
