Huge diversity of this group, both in terms of the people and the way it affects them People can be financially excluded due to circumstances they find themselves in, or because they choose to be Financially Excluded Financially Underserved 27 Average Age 29 Years Years All these banking things are meant for the rich and educated people not for common man like us. But if usage is simple enough, we can also use them too 39% Male 6 Female Gender 70% Male 30% Female January for example, I find it difficult to save money because I may have squandered a lot in December Marital Status married 33% married Sometimes, there is no leftover money to save, it is give and take with my expenses 9% Type of Payment Received in Last 3 months Wages Payment from friend/ family Unsecured loan from others 33% 0% I usually put my ATM card inside it (wallet) but I don t know how to use it. So I normally go to the bank and sign to collect my money Main reason for no full Bank Account 44% 6% Do not have enough money Do not want/ need an account High bank account fees Time lived in Lagos 35% Lived here all my life
2 Money Management With the huge potential of prepaid to this group, what are the barriers and challenges to them using this method of payment? How do they pay? What is their support network? e.g. friends and family? What would they like to be able to do? And how do some of them currently use prepaid? What do they see as the benefits of prepaid? Payment Methods of those paying themselves (and not having it paid for them) are paying by cash 93% Telecommunication 5 Entertainment * I save with Alajo (local collector), when I need the money, I will call him. No need to queue in the bank 9 Clothes 49% Rent * I just save my money in my pocket, so when I need it I can use it 9 Transportation 73% Food 68% Medical 46% Utilities * 36% Education * I save money for my children schooling Money does not come in regularly, so you just need a bit of common sense to budget your expenses ) The 'financially excluded' are significantly more likely than the 'financially underserved' to have these expenses covered by a family / friend / acquaintance except for 'Entertainment' and 'Education'. *) 38% do not spend on entertainment and education whereas close to 50% have their cost associated with where they live and utility cost paid by their family/ friend. 1st The No. 1 ranked overall benefit of having a bank account is: The No. 1 ranked overall perceived benefit of a prepaid card is: The No. 1 ranked overall important factors when choosing payment or saving method: Keeping money in a bank account is safer than keeping cash I would not have to carry cash around Convenient withdrawal I could earn interest on my money I could keep control of my spending Safe & secure payment
3 Attitudes to Technology What are their attitudes to technology - usage and barriers - particularly when managing their money? 85% to a standard mobile phone 3 to a smart phone 5% to laptops to tablet type device 0% to PCs Mobile banking Being able to pay bills online are not seen as key benefits for having a full bank account / prepaid card Main benefits to having a full bank account I could pay my bills electronically 36% Not heard of mobile banking as an alternative to a full bank account 63% Heard of, not used Currently using it I could buy products and services on-line How reliable will it (technology) be with the network failure Main benefits to having a prepaid card I am not competent with technology as there are some things that I don t know yet I could pay my bills electronically I could buy products and services on-line If I use it (bank card) my money will be gone because I don t know what I might press wrong. I am not used to electronics devices
4 Education is Key While financial inclusion is clearly important, what are the main consumer benefits and how can they be made aware of them? What is the perceived cost of a prepaid? How can consumers increase control over their finances? How can the antifraud benefits be promoted? Lack of awareness about usage could be increased? Retailer acceptance is not yet fully understood. Looking from the barriers and advantages of prepaid, there is a clear need for education from governments, NGOs, retailers, and those looking to provide prepaid Advantages - Security Disadvantages The perceived main advantages of a prepaid card are seen as: Prepaid Bank The perceived main disadvantages of a prepaid card are seen as: I would not have to carry cash around 53% 56% I might lose my card I could keep control of my spending 26% 1 Anybody could use my pre-paid card if they pick it up Credible information sources for financial products and services. Overall, none have used prepaid cards in the past whilst 65% have heard of them but not used them with 35% not having heard of them. TV 4 Heard of, but not used 65% 35% Radio 23% Never heard of
5 FUTURE OF PREPAID Looking to the future, prepaid cards have a real role to play in the drive for greater financial inclusion and money management.
