Mobile data services are all non-voice data services and include SMS, MMS, mobile internet and mobile business applications i.e. . e Wireless Wireless connection to the data world and access your favorite information and entertainment portals. 2 1

3 Brief History of Mobile Data Services The first mobile data service that brought much significance and has shaped the way we communicate was SMS (Short Message Service) Developed by carriers to send up to 160 bytes of data that was supposedly to help inform subscribers of e alerts, special promotions, validity dates etc. 3 Brief History of Mobile Data Services However, its popularity grew and this lead to the wide growth of SMS based services. This is similar to that of DST s wiz@d and that provides a platform for Ring tone, wallpaper, games and other infotainment downloads. 4 2

4 Brief History of Mobile Data Services Next came Wireless Application Protocol, where contents are taken from the internet with the images being cut off. services are text which are displayed on a monochrome screen. 5 Brief History of Mobile Data Services Then come GPRS/EDGE, basically same contents but on a different technical platform. Mobile handsets evolve from just plain monochrome screens to colour, More advance contents and applications are provided i.e. games, MP3 ring tones etc. 6 3

5 Mobile Data Services Mobile data services ranges from messaging to business to entertainment. 7 Mobile Data Services - SMS Mobile data services started from SMS, there are many different data services which currently SMS based. It is possible to check for your monthly Prima bill using the SMS based service is a SIM based application which utilizes SMS to provide information on demand. 8 4

6 Mobile Data Services SMS based Information on demand that are available in News Local and International, Sports Football results, Solat Prayer Times, Banking DST-Bills Top tens of books, movies etc etc 9 Mobile Data Services SMS based Currently there are two banks, in Brunei Darussalam which uses the SMS based in their mobile banking, It is possible to check your bank balance and also other contents in the mobile banking, where contents are dependent on the bank. 10 5

7 Mobile Data Services SMS based Another mobile data service for information on demand that also utilizes SMS based, This data service allows the user to get information by just typing the code and sending it via SMS to retrieve the desire information, Information such as English Premier League live results, news headline local and international, etc. 11 Mobile Data Services SMS based There are local content providers who charges subscription for contents to be sent to your handsets via SMS, mobile contents such as breaking news, live results for various sports etc. 12 6

8 Mobile Data Services SMS based Just recently one local school allows the parents to retrieve information of their children such as results, attendance by using SMS based applications. The objective of the new service is to provide parents and students from Primary 1 to Form 5 with a fast and convenient way of retrieving information.
